  1. Never use that crap! i have been cleaning with muriatic acid and then electro plating (galvanize with zinc). If you have a welder and not afraid to make a simple zinc solution, it's very easy. The results are a new tank that won't rust for a very long time if ever. Will do a step by step with pictures if there is interest. Here is a moped tank that my son and I did recently... it's been a year and still looks like new!

  2. I have...don't! Ethanol fuel will cause it to separate from the tank's innards. I don't care how you prep it, stuff will fall off, break up and enter the fuel system. Try Caswell's or POR14.

  4. Yeah, I clearly f'd this thing up. I doubt the initial problem was an air bubble because I didn't touch the coolant system, after the overheat, yeah, that's a problem, but maybe not the main one. If I screwed up the wiring I would think it would either not run at all, run terrible (performance wise), or throw a code. That's not happening. Remember, this bike barely has 1500 miles on it. With the warm weather this week I'll a better chance of getting back to confirm what kind of a dumbass I really am. Uggg, at least the Patriots are getting their ass kicked.

  5. A small number of bandit 400s were imported. I believe 1991-1993. It kind of looked like a Ducati with the red trellis frame. That little bike was a blast to toss into corners.

  6. Rinse it really good after that. Use some sort of oil to coat the inside; it'll flash rust fairly quick again. I've cleaned rust out by loading a length of small chain or a handful of #10 or 12 unplated lockwashers in a tank, wrap the tank with blankets and put it in the dryer. Add more blankets as needed to keep tank from moving around and run it without heat for an hour or so. Remove the hill-billy media, wash out and oil. Yes; my wife spends a lot of time shaking her head...

  7. Lol, I have 2 others, and I'm trying to stimulate the "track day fund". I really am sad to see it go, but truth is, we are making payments on the wife's bike, and I traded the CRF to a CBR, and I'm flat out running out of room. This bandit was the bike I rode everywhere last year cuz the sound is just music to my ears.

  9. I've been working like a maniac at work lately and it's been cold outside so any motivation was drained. I just burped it, I'm going for a test ride in a couple hours. Hope its better! If not, I'll just take it up to J.D. and not worry about it.

  11. I love mine. Every bike is different but on mine he lowered the back of the seat but kept the area in front stock height in order to fix the sliding into the tank issue. I was concerned about it being lower but since it now pivots my hips to more upright it made it soooo much more comfortable and took away almost all pressure points. Check out is web site and FB page. He has lots of pics of his work. http://www.terryscustomseats.com https://www.facebook.com/Terrys-Custom-Seats-150069175036324/

  12. Me too. They're supposedly more stable but man, they're a PIA when you don't own the exact shim you need. I'd rather spend 20 extra minutes getting the nuts adjusted just right than calculating and hunting down shims for a day (or more if you can't buy them locally). That said, I had an oh-shit moment last fall when the previous owner didn't torque the nuts down enough. One intake ran completely off and another intake ran half way up the post. Thankfully the one nut dropped inertly into the valve cover, and XR engines tough as tanks.

  14. If HD renames the Sportster to the Trumpster, I would totally buy one.

  17. A few years ago we got snow so frequently that the roads didn't completely clear for 5 weeks in my neighborhood, the longest period of time I've ever gone without riding. Towards the end, I just couldn't take it and pulled my old XL250R out of the shed, put on my snow suit and fired it up. I only rode around the neighborhood for a half hour, slipping and sliding all over the place, but it was a blast so I started looking into studs. I quickly decided that a proper set up (not just running some sheet metal screws in my tires) was more than I wanted to spend. Plus, the salty slush accelerated the rust on my poor 30 year old bike. I am am curious to see what you're using.
