  1. but if you go to mcdonalds you'd better order in spanish... or you'll get mc nuggets when you asked for a big mac.... rules don't apply to people with no sense of freedom or fairness...

Nah, you go to McDonalds and you're going to get anything but what you ordered, no matter what!!! It's Ronald's way!

While you're at it, order the "add to my spare tire meal" (just saw a Subway commercial...)

  2. If it were me I would find a used junk yard motor and have it thrown in.Seems like the cost is about the same, I bought a 80k mile 5.4 for mine for like 900 paid 500 labor(guy I found on CL) had some stuff done like new plugs n wires and fluids all together it was like 1700. I've since sold the truck to a friend who still has it it has almost 300k on it now did the swap at like 160. Its been my experience with ford motors if they have been overheated they never run right after that. seems as if it does long term damage to the rest of the parts and failure is a lot more likely. Again just my 2 cents

That might be true of older Ford engines, unless they're completely overhauled, but I've put head gaskets on some of the newer ones (not that many, gasket technology has greatly improved) and they've run just as good, if not better as original.

I thought engine rebuild shops would rebuild the entire engine (V-8) for around $1200-$1500. Has it changed? Has that price gone up? Dunno...

And as cheap as I am, I've done head gaskets on V-8s for a few hundred bucks and a lot of work. It's not hard, it just takes tools and time.

Gosh, the old days are gone. People used to throw engine rebuild parties, and pull and rebuild an engine over a weekend.

These days, you'd likely have close to that amount in parts and machine work! A valve job on a V-8 is roughly $225 (or more) to the machine shop.

I believe on this application, you'd have around $200 - 300 (minimum, if you get a good price from the parts supplier) in parts alone just for the head gasket job. It's an expensive head set, then you need plugs (platinums is advised) Thermostat, coolant, oil and filter. You CAN get by with JUST the actual head gaskets, but they're over $100 for the pair!

Auto repair is become a bit more difficult, but even moreso, EXPENSIVE. Since I've been working in a shop for the past (nearly) 10 years, the average ticket has gone up significantly. Labor rates have gone up, parts have gone up, overhead has gone up, difficulty of the jobs has gone up..... Fortunately for the customers, it seems the shop I work for is lagging behind a bit on price increases, due in part to lower overhead, and to be competitive. We are off the beaten path, so most of our business comes from referals, therefore, we HAVE to be on top of our game, and do a good job.

  3. Yep, he's our first! Mark and I are excited. I think we've waited long enough. We didn't want people to think our kid(s) are our grandkid(s) if we waited any longer.

We're not going to be too far from that! I'll be 53 when Eric turns 18!

Yep, we've thought about that too. Well more like when he sneaks out the camaro or one of the motorcycles...He's probably already learned that from me by now when I sneak out the vehicles when Mark's at work.

Did that when I was about 14 or 15. Got caught at a VERY inopportune time..... My dad was ready to kill me (Literally, I think!)

Yeah, we were wondering if we would really be happy if it was either or and if we'd feel guilty if we weren't. Now, WE AIN'T GOTTA WORRY ABOUT THAT SHIT!

We were actually thinking we wanted a girl, since my wife already has 2 boys, amongst other reasons, but I wouldn't trade the little dud for ANY girl out there!

Alert! We got a Coooogah on the prowl?

    Uh oh!!!

  4. Awesome! Have fun and remember the happiness and joy this moment brings...especially when he wrecks your recently paid off SUV...trying to swerve to miss a F'ing raccoon!

I smell a true story here.....

Congrats! My son being born almost 9 months ago has been the biggest, and best life changing experience imaginable! He and I get to spend the day together today, and the little dude HAD to get up early! He's sitting here playing, and having a blast! Can't wait til he's old enough to take on the bike!

  5. The EX500 will always have a place in my heart as my first bike, but it's "overwhelmingly underwhelming" in every way, now that i've ridden better bikes.

my dad's GS500 is light, but anemic in the engine department. If there's anything i really enjoy about it, it's that I get to wring the piss out of it and not be in danger of breaking any posted speed limits :-p

I think this describes why I still like the Ninja250. I ran the piss out of it tonight (as I do most every time I get on it) for a couple quick trips into town. Compared to the Interceptor 500, it IS slow (duh) but the brakes are much better, then you have the suspension dive on the 250, when hitting the brakes..... No bike is perfect, I suppose, but with some work, I think the 500 is gonna be pretty solid for me...

  6. I started out with a textile, but every since I bought my A* leather jacket Ive never ridden without it. I wore it all the time in the desert heat. Id rather sweat a little on a ride then risk getting skin grafts or lose half my back for the sake of staying a little cooler.

:plus1: on the protection vs. staying a little cooler!

Maybe one day I'll move up to leather. First, we have to buy the wife some gear so that she'll feel safer out riding, and therefore will ride more! I bet she's got about 15 miles in since we got our endorsements!!!!

I forgot to mention when talking about my gear, Ialso have a couple pair of gloves, one is Firstgear winter gloves, waterproof, and warmer, but still not all that warm. The other pair are fieldsheer mesh. I'm thinking about getting something with hard armor in them though. Next season maybe...
