  1. I have been riding on Avon Storm tires the last two years. I got 24k out of an Avon Storm on the front. A Storm 2 Ultra on the rear is at 15k with probably another 2 - 5k remaining. I run these tires at 42 PSI. This is the best mileage I have gotten out of any tires on any bike. Anyone else able to get this kind of mileage out of a sport touring tire?
  2. Let's all learn from this tragedy. You cannot let your situational awareness lapse. It sounds like the rider failed to realize the truck was turning until it required quick evasive action. Unfortunately the rider did execute the skills required to complete the emergency maneuver. Practice to improve your skills.
  3. Wet ride home today.
  4. Safe and responsible. The more you know the better it gets.
  5. Check the idle jets for blockage. I suspect PPS did not synch the carbs as they would have experienced this problem - unless they synch'd the cold. Do yourself a favor and dig into the bike and check it out yourself. You will learn more about the bike, become more self-sufficient and save yourself some cash in the future.
  6. I was disappointed today. Of 24 students in the MSF Instructor class held at the Hilltop today, only three of us rode. How can you expect to be a proficient instructor if you are unwilling or unable to ride in a wide variety of weather and road conditions? Man-up!
  7. Who has entered the Smoke Chasing 2011 AMA Grand Tour? This is a good excuse to ride a couple states, eat some good BBQ and support Eddie's Road - a great charity. Find the details here, http://www.smokechasing.com/
  8. +1 on the Warm n Safe. The jacket and glove liners keep me toasty. The glove liners could be warmer but I have never had to turn the jacket all the way up. I have ridden multiple times in temps as low as 15F with this gear. I am looking to get the heated insoles. My Alpinestars boots are not as warm as the ones they replaced.

  11. I ride most days. If you wait for perfect weather you might as well sell your bike. Riding in a variety of weather and road conditions builds your skills.
  12. Both are great bikes. If you want to do serious miles the C14 is hard to beat for the money. The C14 will likely make your commuting easier in that you have plenty of storage and weather protection, so you can haul more and ride in a greater range of weather. If you are primarily a fair weather rider, don't regularly do 800+ mile days, and don't need to carry much, there is no reason to consider the C14.
  13. Great day for a ride; got in about 75 miles after finishing the honey-do list. Went to the Pony and was surprised to see only two other bikes there - both ADV riders.
  14. When I left work yesterday afternoon about 3:45, it had been flurrying for about 30 minutes. The roads were mostly clear until I go to the rest area on 71 between Columbus and Delaware. The remainder if the ride was slow and unnerving. 36/37 and the rest of the ride (12 miles) were on fully snow covered roads. Several times I had to correct the bike when the rear end slid out. Steady throttle and brake control were critical. While the ride was difficult and scary, it definitely helped build my riding skills.
  15. I have been riding every day this week. The 13F temps this morning led to some frosting of my face shield but what the heck. Any ride beats driving a car. You can always tell my bike - it is the dirty one. I prefer to spend my time on my bike instead of looking at it!
  16. I try to ride year-round. If you are concerned with rust and corrosion get the hose and bucket out and wash her down. I don't worry about it as I figure to get at most eight years out of a bike. Since I buy used and ride an average of 15-20k annually, I figure I have used the majority of the value of the bike. Depending on condition, I sell it outright or I break it down for parts.
  17. That is a sweet ride. The Honda V4 is practically bulletproof. The ADV rider market is opening up with many new models.
  18. Endurance riding is subjective. To some people a long day riding consists of 400 mile; to others a long day of riding is 1000 or 1600 miles. IBA certifications appeal to two types of people - riders who do a ride once as a challenge, and riders who ride the distance as a norm. Either way it can be fun. To each his own.
  19. Why do some riders insist on a loud exhaust? Aside from the whole loud pipes save lives bs, what is the allure? A relatively quiet exhaust can provide as good as or better performance as straight pipes. What is the reason for all the loudness? Do these riders think anyone wants to hear their bike? Do they think that obnoxious behavior endures the public to motorcycling? What is the reason? Is it to compensate for another deficiency?
  20. Congrats. I am looking to do a lower Great Lakes ride next May - about 1180 miles. Let me know if you are interested. IBA #38132 SS1k BBG '91 ST1100
  21. I have been riding my ST1100 to work most days when the roads are clear at 0500 when I leave for work. I have not seen any other riders for the last couple of weeks. Is anyone still riding?
  22. Sorry to hear about your accident. I had a letter to the editor in The Delaware Gazette regarding ODNR's inability to effectively handle the deer population. Did your accident occur during daylight hours or at night? That was a good looking ST you had. I ride a black '91 ST myself. Kill all forest rats! Bambi must die!
  23. My 1946 Indian Chief is my favorite. Three speed on the tank, foot clutch, reversed throttle and spark controls. What could be more fun to ride?
