  1. I have a set of BT023s on my ST1100 at present. Only a couple thousand miles on them so far. I formerly used Avon Storm tires. The Avons were superior in the wet and in cold temperatures; unfortunately the dual compound led to an odd wear pattern on the front that created head shake. I like the Bridgestones but expect to get only 8 - 10k out of them (hopefully) compared to 12k+ with the Avons.
  2. The SS1000 is very doable. The secret to endurance riding to to minimize your number of stops and the duration of each stop. Keep your stops to no more than five to ten minutes, making sure the gas stations enable a quick on and off the highway. Provided you have at least 200 mile range, you should plan on no more than six stops. This will get you done in sixteen hours or less if you are riding interstate or multi-lane primary highways. The proper clothing and equipment is paramount to staying in the saddle for three to four hours at a stretch. Once you get an SS1000 under your belt, go for the Bun Burner Gold challenge of 1500 miles in 24 hours. The documentation is no big deal. Make sure you have receipts with location and time stamps. Log any extended durations off the bike (more than twenty minutes). Have fun!
  3. This looks like a good reason to get the motorcycle out on December 2.
  4. Mike, Thanks for that tip. Yes, I do support the Second Amendment. I possess a CHL and am a member of the NRA.
  5. If you live in Delaware, please consider voting for me, George A. Hellinger for Delaware City Council. I have been riding for many years; a couple years ago, I started teaching Motorcycle Ohio MSF classes also. If you ever thought that motorcyclists are under represented in city government, now is your chance to put an active rider on Delaware city council. Thank you for your support. Ride safe. George A. Hellinger
  6. I recommend the Aerostich Darien Light. I ride year-round with this jacket - from the teens to 100 degrees. Great ventilation and the product quality and customer service is top-notch. They will repair the jacket if needed.
  7. Ride to the AMA headquarters and HOF Museum on Saturday. Motorcycle Ohio is celebrating its 25th year of providing rider education. Come out and enjoy the free events. AMA members get free admission to the museum this day.
  8. The AMCA event has been the third weekend in July for more than 25 years. Mid-Ohio and/or AMA were responsible for rescheduling their event and causing the conflict.
  9. Antique motorcycle meet this weekend in Wauseon at the county fairgrounds. Flat track racing Friday at 6:30.
  10. I tell my motorcycle students to be aware of the white traffic markings. The reduce traction when dry and are very slick when wet.
  11. The IBR defines long distance riding. These riders are awesome as is the event. Don't confuse this with the chief dickwad event that has run the last couple years.
  12. I am leaning towards a C14 when I supplement my ST1100 in another 30k miles.
  13. Earplugstore.com I is a goor source. You can get variety packs of different soft plugs inexpensively. Find the type that works best for you. They sell all types of ear plugs.
  14. Back in the 80's, Ohio was on the verge of promoting traffic filtering - allowing motorcycles to move to the front of the line at traffic lights. I remember doing this multiple times while being watched with approval from OSHP. The State seems to no longer condone this. Traffic filtering makes sense as it relieves congestion and allows for increased traffic flow. There are minimal safety issues as filtering is only to occur when traffic is stopped.
  15. Welcome Mike. Ride like everyone and everything is out to kill you.
  16. I can't claim that one. I don't know who that was. I was supposed to teach in Delaware this coming weekend, but those plans have now changed...
  17. Thanks everyone. I attribute my total lack of bruising to the armor in my Aerostich jacket. The jacket will be sent back to Aerostich for repair. I do agree, better I than a student. But having had several get-offs in the past, including a 40mph impact into a left turning car, this one feels the worst. I guess it sucks being a little-less-young.
  18. Private SEL since 1975. Not current.
  19. Andy Goldfine thinks of everything!
  20. Thanks Karl. I wish I could have taught Sunday as well. There are few things that give me the satisfaction that instructing motorcycle classes does.
  21. While getting ready to instruct a Motorcycle Ohio class on the Hilltop last Saturday, I low-sided one of the training bikes while traveling 12 to 15 miles per hour. This accident resulted in three broken ribs and two suspected fractured ribs. The factors involved in this accident include, cold tires, cold pavement, new tires and lean angle. While staging the bikes for class, I failed to notice some of the bikes had new front tires. My assumption that the tires were seasoned is costing me six to eight weeks of riding and instruction time. Don't assume.
  22. Aerostich gear works in all climates for me. Waterproof and breathable.
  23. Any fool can ride fast and most fools do.
