When it comes to engagement rings the best is to buy a loose stone then have it mounted (this makes inspection of the stone possible in all aspects). Looks like you already found that out. My best piece of advice is the get someone that is very knowledgeable about identifying stones and take them to that jewelry show that comes through columbus. I had a friend of mine by a 2.5 carat princess cut stone with that way classified as a very very high quality stone for $400. Then bought a simple band and mounted it tiffanys style. Took it to the Diamond Cellar to get it appraised and it was valued at $15.5k. He spent $1,000 total. Basically learn about stones or hire someone that does to help you find a stone not in a jewelry store, because honestly they are some of the worst crooks lol. I know this cause my friends dad owns the Diamond Cellar.

Mark up on stones is retarded. like a 1k stone is worth about $100, i shit you not. Scott, ask the dealer if the stone is a natural or a synthetic when you go in. If its a synthetic, you should get it for about 1/10th the price of a natural stone(s). This is very important because stores legally have to tell you whether it is or isnt a man made stone if they have the documents. Unfortunately most stores "lose" the papers and at that point have no legal obligation to verify the origin of the stone (kinda fucked up). The good way to tell if it is a synthetic is if its been colored (most stones on the market are artificially colored these days). If you need any help with this let me know, ive learned more than i ever wanted to know about stones over the last couple of months.
