He's got his mom to coddle him and let him do whatever the f he wants. (which is why I'm in this position in the first place) It's my job to parent, teach responsibility, and accountability. If he lies and proves to be un trustworthy, then he won't be trusted. With that comes loss of freedoms and privileges (phone, tv, Internet etc) Pretty common sense stuff if you ask me. You obviously don't know me, but I am one of the most trustworthy people you would ever meet. But if you lie to me you have lost my trust, and it will take a lot to rebuild it. My son has proven that he lies compulsively. So that is where my distrust (of him or those who lie to me, not everybody like you would like to paint with your broad brush) comes from. I am very strict, and I admit my son rebelled. But trust and freedom has to be EARNED. When he would show signs of a level head, be honest, be where he said he would be, then he got free reign. But lie to me, about who you're with, do stupid stuff to get in legal trouble and you bet your ass the leash just got a LOT shorter and I start making surprise visits at your hangout spots, hookup the ip camera that I have left over from the showroom, etc. I'm a firm believer in actions for consequences, and being too soft in my opinion creates a child w an "entitled" mentality that I actually see a little of in this thread. Sorry. This isnt trying to slam U or anyone else. Just a sore topic for me as my son and I are currently not speaking. (his moms the enabler/"buddy" and I'm the strict one) NoBama 2012

I've done similar (not w guns) but only because he (my soon to be 18 y/o son) had proven time and time again that he couldn't be trusted. And it was about specific ongoing issues, not so much creating new ones. From a gun safety issue I can maybe see justifying this. I don't know. Forgot to mention and probably too late now but 5% DOES make it a PITA to drive at night. Backing up, turns in neighborhoods, etc all require me to roll down the windows (minimum drivers window) to see. But I would still do the 5% again. Thought about automating the windows to roll down when car put in reverse, etc:) NoBama 2012
