  1. I don't know what size you need but I have a bunch of gear I need to sort thru and sell. I dropped a bunch of weight to make a run at the OMRL and MotoSeries events. I got rid of one of my suits already but I have more and lots of street gear too.Icon riding pants and jeans, jackets etc.

Todd - I might take you up on that offer... looking at sizes, it seems to depend on the manufacturer... so I honestly don't know what size to give you... I will send you a PM with a bit more information...

Sounds like your gear is already to the point of being too big for safety, but man, it's not like going out and buying a cheap pair of pants and a t-shirt to fit you in the interim while you continue with your weight-loss program. ...

OH, BTW, congrats on working your way to healthy!!!

Yes, that is my dilemma... I didn't think about the effect of loosing weight when I bough the gear I have now...so here I am...

I am not sure that I will just add the MX guards... I am concerned with more than just the padding...what about how loose the jacket is... if I do go down, I don't want the jacket to slide out of place, and cause me to be picking gravel out of my skin for weeks...or worse...asphalt burn...

Between the stuff I just bought to upgrade the bicycle, and the replacement of my gear for the motorcycle... this "getting healthy" thing sure is getting expensive!

  2. I am not so concerned about the cost, within reason... the gear is a cheap life insurance policy...and I get that the fit is of great importance... hence the question...

I guess what I am trying to figure out: Do I go ahead and plan on buying new jacket/pants/suit 2 more times, one set now, and another set 20-30 pounds in the future?

How much margin in "snug and proper fit" is there, would the gear I buy now still be safe with 20-30 pounds less of me?

Given the lack of a good fit at 40 pounds difference, I am not honestly sure...

  3. I know it's already pretty much been said... but I'll throw my $.02 in...

    I am 5' 5", riding a factory height cbr600.

When I bought the bike, I had discussed the potential of lowering it, as I came from the cruiser world, where the lower seat allowed me to flat foot the bike with both feet. The conclusion that I came to: I needed to learn balance and one foot stops.

I was not willing to sacrifice the handling of a "track oriented bike" when all I needed to do was learn a new technique.

    Lowering link: $60

    Labor and total cost: $250

Realization that lowering the bike doesn't make me a better rider: PRICELESS!

  4. With the conversation about gear going on in the "I crashed my bike, I love wearing gear" thread, about the armor of a jacket just rolling over, the following thought occured to me: I bought my jacket 40 pounds and a few waist inches ago.

At what point should I consider the gear I have unsafe due to size? It is a much looser fit now, and the armor moves all over the place.

I still have 20-30 pounds to loose before I am at my goal, so do I wait and buy the correctly sized gear then, or should I go ahead and get some new, more properly fit gear now?

I am talking street gear, not track leathers....

  5. I will also add:

Because of the way the electric distribution system is built... a backfeed can go much further up the line than just your house, thus, endangering a lineguys life 2, 3 or more houses up the road.

Considering the transfer switch, like what GUMP linked, only costs $230... can you truly say not spending $230 is worth potentially killing someone?

  6. my $.02:

    POINT 1:

having worked for a electric supplier, I can tell you that a lineguy's worst fear during last mile power restoration is a back fed generator...

While it will technically work... alot of the line guys will skip over a last mile restoration issue where the house is being powered by generators, unless they can see that a proper transfer switch, and proper generator installation was performed.

In some areas, a back fed generator (plugging a male-to-maile extension cord into the house electric wiring) is considered a code violation, and believe me, when a lineguys life is on the line... many are not afraid to report the violation...

Should you still choose to back feed the generator, the process should be something like this:

Step 1 after power goes out:

    TURN OFF MAIN BREAKER(S)

Step 2 after power goes out:

Think about where your generator is right now, then TURN OFF MAIN BREAKERS

Step 3: Look at the generator, but don't touch it, no GO TURN OFF THE MAIN BREAKERS

You get the point... Don't even think about turning on the generator, or plugging the house into the generator via a back feed cable without turning off the main breaker(S)

    POINT 2:

Back feeding your generator takes a lot more thought than simply making or purchasing a male to male cable and plugging it in. Circuit breakers are not isolation devices, in the case of a back feed... this means that you may be able to power more outlets in the home than what is on that circuit breaker... it all depends on the neutral bond that was made at the electric panel.

Because of this, you need to ensure that your back feed extension wiring can handle the back feed amperage, that your house wiring can handle the amperage, etc...

I have referred people to this site before as a good resource for back-feeding the home, should an emergency arise and you so desire:

  7. Really?  Tell me what the "doskey" command does (without searching for the answer) and we can talk about who feels old...

    repeatable and re-callable command history...

How about who here actually used windows 1.0?

  8. 1. The idea that a corporation can have a religion is stupid.

<OFF TOPIC> This is probably my biggest issue with many of the "religion" based cases that make it into the legal system... I can understand that a business entity can be formed around, and ran based on, the principles that are laid out within a set of religious beliefs, but the business itself is only "Christian" on the basis that the owners or founders are...</OFF TOPIC>

Isn't that kind of a moot point though?  Whether you want the new healthcare system or not is kind of irrelevant because it is in place.

    This...

The debate in this thread is stupid, it was over about three posts in when someone else mentioned this. This is a VERY narrow ruling and only impacts 3 types of 'birth control'. All of the rest, condoms, pills...all of that stuff is still covered and still mandated.

    And This....

We, as a country, got EXACTLY what we voted for.

Nobody is taking away anything we didn't elect them to take away. We have met the asshats, and they are us.

    And This...

All the above quotes should equal /END THREAD... but then again...

...You should read up on the actual ruling...

And I clearly said I was not opposed to abortion, in fact I am in favor of it for most everyone here.

What a minute... stop the presses.... you said what... we should what...READ? Oh my...

<Insert random picture of random sport biker in flipflops, shorts and no helmet> = Best birth control and abortion package available!

  9. Just_some_dude:

I get where your going... but the problem is that as of now, option 1, number 4, employer says no... is no longer an option.

The ACA mandated that employers provide coverage for birth control.

That is why this Hobby Lobby case garnered so much attention...

  10. I'm not sure how it's much different from an employer not wanting to cover dental or eyes so I'm also intrigued to listen to the fight that's going to ensue to learn more

If I understand correctly, the affordable care act made a blanket requirement of coverage for all 20 birth control drugs, and at argument were 4 of them.

Hobby Lobby was not asking to be exempted from providing coverage for all birth control...they actually already cover 16 of the 20 FDA approved birth control medicines.

Hobby Lobby was seeking exemption from the 4 supposed abortifacient drugs, under the idea that their "Christian principles" stand against abortion.

The difference is that they are not asking to not have to provide all medical coverage, or even all birth control coverage.

The Supreme Court seems to have based their ruling on the RFRA (religious freedoms restoration act)  - in my opinion, that act was to protect the individual's right to religious freedom, not a corporate entities right to show me how I should believe, etc.

What is more troubling to me in this is what I feel was an improper application of a individual assignment or protection of rights to a corporate structure... my right, as an individual, to have religious freedom, now applied to a corporation, could seem to mean the refusal of service, based of skin color, hair color or length, etc.

So my religion could say that men can't have long hair, therefore, a corporate entity that espouses to hold to the same belief system could now refuse service to a long haired male?

I am honestly not sure how I feel on this...  Will be interesting to watch this thread... I wonder what derailment it will become?

  11. How would a failed lower result in an explosion? All the major pressure bearing parts are contained within the upper, aren't they? Maybe a ftf due to poor trigger group installation or something...but explosion? If my ar were to explode... I think I would be looking at what round I was shooting, and the breach/chamber before I looked at the lower...

  12. UPDATE: I didn't end up making it to Kentucky this past weekend - other plans came up. that's the bad news...

The Good news: I don't have any plans this coming weekend, and assuming the weather holds, I think I am going to make a trip and ride some of the mentioned roads...

I will definitely plan on hitting 227, and probably 22 as well.

  13. In gear, most of the time... driveway is a hill, work parking is a slight slant... figure it keeps the bike from rolling... the rest of the time, it's become a habit.

I start the bike both ways, but more often off the bike... If I am afforded the ability to let the bike warm up without annoying the neighbors, I shift to nuetral, start her up, and put my gear on while shes warming up... If the bikes is already warm... I hop on, clutch in, and roll

  14. So, I might be headed down to Louisville for a RC airplane event this weekend (fundraiser for kids organization), and thought I might turn it into a MC ride... I am not participating, just going to support/spectate, so no worries on luggage space.

Any suggestions on "must ride" roads along the general SouthWest path between Delaware OH and Louisville KY?

If I use google maps, and tell it to avoid highways and tolls, I come with about 230 miles one direction.

Event starts 11am saturday, and ends Sunday at 5pm... So I am figuring on somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-5 hours, one direction.
