  1. Ok, so I know nothing of the machinist world, but 2 of my "bonehead coworker" stories:

    First:

    At a previous employer:

Background: Our email was hosted offsite, by a larger partner organization. Any internet circuit maintenance that involved an outage would interrupt email access.

My replacement, shortly after I left (I stayed on part time to help transition the role), sent a notice of internet circuit outage, via email, stating that he would notify users when the work was complete via email... the very same email that he would be disabling access to.

"what do you mean you didn't know it was working again, I sent you an email that the email system was working again"

    Second:

    Same previous employer, same department:

Coworker: "what does the big red button that says 'emergency power off' do over in the data center?"

Me: "Why do you ask? No, wait, let me guess... considering the fact that no one has any application or internet access at the moment, you already know what it does!"

Coworker: "Well, not exactly... I heard the UPS beeping after I pushed it, and thought I should come ask you... so I didn't stick around to see what it did"

  2. First - What is your goal: the certification and door opening for jobs, or the book learning?

Second - how much self study initiative do you have? - You can do a lot of the cert prep work much cheaper on your own, if you have the initiative... the only way its ever been cheaper for me to take a course like this is when the local tech college offers a steeply discounted student rate for the actual Cert test at the end of the class... although I am not sure how much cheaper it really was, after you add the class cost in with the book cost, and then the exam cost at the end...

I personally did not have a good experience with LearnSmart Systems. I had signed up for a cisco deal they were offering, it was basically a "try one course, and if you like it, get more" deal. Had to give CC information, and basically buy the whole course work, in order to "try" it, then cancel within 30 days and one course, if I didn't like it...

Well... I didn't like it... I spent over 2 months trying to cancel... had to get the credit card provider involved. Finally got it cleared up.

The course work itself wasn't much more than what I could get out of a Cisco book itself, and was basically some guy reading from the book anyways.

I would only be able to assume that it's the same way with PMP/CAPM stuff on there...

I ended up taking the self study route, came out cheaper in the end...

  3. I know I am a little late on this topic.. but I can re-confirm, considering I have been in the Sandusky Ohio area during bike week (my anniversary is the 5th, so no... I did not go because of bike week)

Ohio Bike week is a bunch of harley's, harley wanna-be's, a bunch of alcohol, and a bunch of drunk's on bikes "rocking out" to 80's tribute bands (no offense to those that like the 80's rock)... Not to mention the burn out pits, globe of death, stunt shows...

Yeah, not what I would consider a week of fun...

  4. That is messed up!

Even if you look at the entropy of each of those:

    Password1 - 40.(something) bits of entropy

the first 20 characters of the random string = 72.(something) bits of entropy...

EEESH! - wonder what algorithm(s) ebay uses to calculate password strength and complexity....

Potentially they look for an upper case character within the password before determining it to be stronger?

Note to self... Ebay security might be as bad as facebook privacy...

  5. Thanks for the advice. I will keep it in mind as I ride...

I guess I was looking more for how the sweep, or any other "advise giver" would effectively give these pieces of advise, and coach, another rider, during a group ride, and not "ruin" the group ride for everyone else...

  6. Take me for example - I have a few thousand miles and a few years under my belt... but all on cruisers. I rode the epic ride, on a CBR600, in the slow group. First long ride, with good roads, on a sport bike. I got lazy on the cruisers, and realized that when I switched to the sport bike world. While I was comfortable in the slow group, I am sure I could have used some advice...

It got me to thinking though, how would you effectively coach a person on a group ride, with no further back (other than going home) to go, and still not hold others up on the ride... hence the question...

  7. Dixie is more but better build quality with metal gas tank instead of xmark plastic ones. Very similar design and both cut well and are very fast.

    ^^^ This.

With Exmark, you have to watch... they make both a commercial and a residential line... I would venture to guess that with 6-7 acres, and a mile of trails, you might want to make sure the lazer E series is commercial. (without research, I don't know)....

  8. Ha, yeah I was going to take her somewhere since I've never done a sprocket before and didn't want to waste time figuring it out at the height of the riding season. Although, it appears I don't even have time to take her somewhere :-P

What part of the "Cowntry" might you be located in? Maybe we could pull some resources together to help you change that sprocket and get you rolling quickly again?

  9. Not necessarily a price match, but when I bought my icon helmet there, the only one left in my size was the floor model. It was already on clearance, and they still allowed more discount beyond the clearance price,  because of the fact that it had been out of the box, and worn by others.

That made them a A+ in my book (and they have done that for me on multiple occasions, with multiple items)

  10. just helped rebuild one of these with a friend... the red fuel container requires you to manually pump it build pressure... all the orings and valve stem packing were dried up and no good... a rebuild from coleman parts, and she cooks as good as new...

I say you clean it up a bit, and use the heck out of it...ebay has these things going for $30 ish...

Parts and rebuilds direct from Coleman:

  11. JC - after riding with the slow group yesterday on the EPIC ride, what pace is "normal" for the CSBA group?

10 over on straights and 5-10 over suggested around tighter corners is about my comfort right now... don't want to slow any one up to much on the ride...

still plan on coming along, even if I have to tag along at the back of the pack...

  12. just over 330 miles total trip yesterday.

It was definitely worth the cold start to meet and ride

Thanks to Dizzledan for the meet at IronPony and ride down, and for the media.

Thanks to Cdubyah for leading the slow group, great job keeping us together through all those stop lights!

Looking forward to the next one!

  13. There is no spoon.

Seriously though, you guys should know better.  Mags knows everything.  If you don't believe me, just ask Mags.

This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.
