  1. Facebook update from nelsons. Sounds like the grand plan for 17 is just patching and replacement vs repave, and "maybe" on bikes...
  2. Cool thanks for the info guys. One more question- what top end would you expect on a 600 there? I'm running gearing that just barely touches red line at MidO and expecting a change of at least one or two teeth?
  3. one month left! I've got a new battery to install (unbelievably lightweight lithium ion), and besides refilling the engine coolant it should be ready to go. I've begun a massive kitchen renov and have other financial setbacks that are gonna probably force me to a single day of riding (Sat). so at this point, i'm planning on driving down Fri and returning Sun morning, but may change plans while down there. not to be antisocial, but that means I'll have to travel solo. def need to set up an OR camping area tho.
  4. To further illustrate the point, out-braking the other guy by even 50' only gets you whopping tenth of second in lap time (goofing around in Excel I built this simple simulation of the back straight going into turn 6 at Mid-Ohio) ... The BETTER method would be too ease off the brakes a bit (note only 0.9 G's of braking), and instead build your corner speed up by another 5 mph, and guess what you picked up almost a half second (-0.4sec) versus the other guy.
  5. One of the most valuable things I've read (Lee Parks?) for improving my lap times was the concept discussed above, which is don't get too wound up about late-braking, but instead focus on building on your entry speed. Then as you build your confidence with your entry and corner speed your braking point will likely drift deeper and deeper into the corner. I did a track school at CSS a couple years ago and they actually forbid the use of brakes during much of the school. As frustrating as it was, it allowed me the mental freedom to work on technique and building up to the "right" entry speed. http://forums.superbikeschool.com/index.php?/topic/310-the-fine-art-of-braking/
  6. I signed up for Saturday and saw they had race school same day and figured WTH and registered for it. No pretense on wanting to be a rich and famous racer, but may eventually do some vintage racing and besides that I thought some additional coaching would be helpful. Bad idea for a new track, on the first TD of the season?
  7. Wow. So ride your ass off for two days, load up, and then drive 12 hours straight back to be back in time for work Monday? Oooph. I must be getting old. My idea of fun is to peel off my boots, plop into a lawn chair, and tear into a cooler of cold ones with no intention on leaving till morning.
  8. no time constraints. i'm pretty flexible and ride share would be great. I'm not expecting for it get sold out very soon since it's Easter weekend, but probably should register soon! 8>| is everyone running both days? leave Fri morning? camping at track? drive back Monday morning?
  9. hey i'm seriously considering this trip with ya'all. my usual group is slowly turning into a bunch of weenies with family responsibilities and all (wink), so hope you guys don't mind me joining you. a couple things: 1. what level is everyone running in N2? I actually graduated to A group a couple years ago, but haven't ridden with N2 since. I'd prefer to ride I group even if I get demoted, since it's the first TD of the year, and a brand new track for me, and i'd rather run the same group as the rest of the gang. 2. i'd likely be rolling down there solo in my truck (no trailer), and could take a passenger and/or bike if someone needs a lift.
  10. <100$ for a Dual XGPS 150 + 30$ for software. unless you're pulling in extra channels of bike data, it's absolutely adequate. Plus, you can update your Facebook status while riding. ;>]
  11. i'm not techy and getting it to work (at least the most recent versions) was no problem at all for me. I connect the phone to my home network whenever visiting a new track to download the "waypoints", and that's all there is to it. if nelson's is downloadable, pretty much everything is. lol. just because one guy had trouble with it, I wouldn't blow it off as no-good. if it DOESNT work, so what if you wasted 20 bucks (the cheap version). just saying.
  12. I have used 4 different systems on mine and my son's bikes: 1. XT Racing - great to use if all you care about is lap time; downside is it requires a beacon (usually about 10% time there isn't one for whatever reason) 2. handlebar button - theoretically a good solution, but practically speaking it's a pita and I just can't get in the mindset to remember to hit the button each and every lap 3. GPX Pro - around 500 bucks, very sophisticated GPS based system. and has the ability to bring in other data like engine speed and throttle position. Times are easy to get, but it's rather clumsy to do lap analysis since it requires download to a laptop. 4. Harry's Laptimer - http://www.gps-laptimer.de/products $30 or so, I use an old iPhone (no cellular plan) velcroed to my tank, and it gives me lap time, speed, g's, etc. and comparing laps is a breeze. I love this thing. The phone itself can provide about a 1 hz update, so the positioning isn't crazy accurate. However it interpolates to get tenth of a second resolution, and for us mere mortals that's plenty good. If you want better, buy a Bluetooth GPS unit (like a Dual XGPS) to generate 5hz updates. This is my typical choice. data below is some old data on a 250 at nelsons...
  13. I've come to find out the Bose buds have two levels of sound canceling - and a guy on another forum claims that the lower setting works well for track/street, with just enough noise reduction to remove the wind noise. Maybe santa will bring them. And if they don't work I can use them for flying/travel.
  14. yes, that's exactly my concern. you almost need a microphone pointed at the exhaust and piped into the headset. maybe i'll just get a better helmet and a louder exhaust...
  15. any experience with these things? https://www.amazon.com/Bose-QuietComfort-Acoustic-Cancelling-Headphones/dp/B00X9KV0HU I've been using either my Fit Ear molded plugs, or cheap disposable foam inserts, but have two issues: 1. I rarely get a good fit into my ear canal and the molded plugs get dislodged and leak sound 2. the foam plugs work better, but cut too much sound For track riding especially, I really want to hear the motor (instead of the wind) and as expensive as the Bose headphones are I might give it a shot. Besides I can listen to Mariah Carey while ripping around the track! (jk, I can't listen to music while riding)
  16. or, he may also have chosen to spend the last two months sunning in the Mediterranean. with his money i can't believe he's concerned about these inevitable (or even anticipated) issues. it's be like one us buying a winter beater on craigslist, and then bitching to the seller that it needed a new battery a month later.
  17. Tea does nice work, and awesome to work with. Godspeed to Ryan, I didn't know him well but he was always very cool to talk to. My last image of him was at MidO about a month ago, I was on track and just as I opened it up on the front straight, RHill goes flying by on the inside with his left hand giving me the thumbs up. And he was gone. Figuratively, and literally.
  18. With how the new owner has been attacking the upgrade of the old Beav I wouldn't be surprised if it's already on paper.
  19. Yah I wouldn't put that past them! I've always thought the spectating opportunities were pretty limited at the old Beav. Guessing maybe better with the new south addition, but it's no MidOhio.
  20. on one hand i kinda understand "no camping" since they don't have the space the other venues do, but on the other hand it's kinda hard to believe they would stage such a huge event without that provision. we did a two day event there years ago (supermoto racing) and i can tell you the hotel offerings are rough, and sparse. i hope they change their mind. i wonder if motorhomes are considered "camping"?
  21. i did a search for "555" on this forum and got no results, so figured i'd discovered something special. Must be a search engine limitation. Or, these ride routes are a closely guarded secret, especially based on the replies from everyone on this post "yah, it's good but not my favorite", then no offer to divulge that favorite. not fair.
  22. Drove down to OU to visit my son in my wife's new 335i and decided to take the scenic route from Zanesville to Athens using route 555 (the "triple nickel"), and wow what great roads. I've never done Deals Gap, but i can't image it's got anything on 555. Pristine road surface, crazy elevation change in places, no cops, and almost no traffic. Plus beautiful scenery this time of year. We took the road there and back and probably wore 10k off the tires. The only downsides are blind crests, blind turns, and the corner markings are very inconsistent. But there's def places to wick it up and still be safe. I've pretty much relegated my fast riding to the track, but i'd seriously consider returning with the Ape...
  23. I bought a 2500 watt genny from harborfreight that runs two sets of warmers with no issue. Honda look alike. Used once. Selling if interested. (prefer a bigger one with 220 to power the house)
  24. Not sure how to pull this off, but sure would be cool to knock this track off the list, and so late in the year would be perfect to stretch out the season. It's on Sunday Nov 27, and $399. (about 100 cheaper than usual) Plus travel expenses! But with a some clever planning might be doable as a group?... http://us11.campaign-archive2.com/?u=5049914f9b250a35a52deb3ec&id=d92d17f437
