  1. I'll say this about honda quads: fucking indestructible. A customer dropped a 24 yr old 250 off at my place a few weeks ago. Burning oil, smoking like a house on fire. Still had power, still started after 4 kicks. Diagnosis: hole in crank case, crank case full of mud, cylinder out of round and worn beyond service limits, oil filter and filter housing full of a paste of metal dust and oil, intake valve seats no longer sealing due to oil/mud/sludge buildup, spark plug so nasty with oil ash buildup there was maybe a .015 gap. He stopped riding it because the smoke was a nuisance.
  2. And the higher compression pistons do the same thing but should have deeper relief for the valves. I'd get on a 700xx forum and see if anyone has used the combo you're looking at successfully.
  3. I'm sure the cam is bolt in with a stock crank and the crank us bolt in with stock cam, but both parts essentially reduce the valve to piston clearance, so both together might crash the motor.
  4. No tps on mk1's iirc. 2k was the last year for them, then they went to the mk2 with dual projector headlight with a different fairing, fairing mounted mirrors, slightly different frame and grab rails. Looking at the pics I don't see a tps. It's still a pain to tune a bandit with pods, and unless this was jetted up it will run for shit. Don't understand why they did that and not the can, unless it's gutted....
  5. I've gotten a boner while driving before...Thank god for those $.25 booths...
  6. Missing the airbox but still has stock pipe...my guess is unless someone jetted it up, it runs kinda poopy. Still a great deal on a monster bike. I've heard the mk1's were easier to tune as well.
  7. Lol....did he at least get centered up on the hole before he went full retard? (Assuming he was indicating the hole for location purposes)
  8. Lol...my 1100 shadow would do 75 in 3rd I think....
  9. You'd have to plastigage the valve clearance with the stock crank and hot cam to make sure you have the stock clearance + 1/8 inch....but probably won't if you're running a hot cam with a stock piston.
  10. Lol ill get right on that. 90 mph in the rain through my neighborhood streets that resemble a bombing range....
  11. Dude I work with wants it. There's a motor on ebay for $500 shipped. Gonna see what the customer wants for his junk bike.
  12. Death. For all involved. Slow painful unusual death.
  13. It's his kids quad, I don't think either of them knew about the hole in the crank case, couldn't see it through all the mud caked on the motor. I'm not pissed dude, just explaining why it's a lost cause. Who knows? Maybe it's worth finishing the top end, I don't feel any slop in the crank or rod bearings and the bike was running good despite burning a serious amount of oil. I'll call the guy monday, see what he wants to do.
  14. Dude I'm not going to split cases and replace rod, crank, transmission etc plus entire top end job on a 24 year old bike that was only made for 4 years even if I could find the parts. and still make money on it. A much better use of my time would be to work on other bikes for other customers at $50/hr and actually make money. You must have too much time on your hands.
  15. And do what with it? Sell it to someone and have the motor blow up on them? I'm not gonna put my stamp on that. Going to pull the oil filter out tomorrow and look at it, if it's caked with sand I can assume that the rest of the motor has been treated to some serious abrasion, in which case I'll tell him the motor is nws.
  16. It's a 24 year old $500 quad. Pretty sure he's gonna tell me to scrap it and just pay me my labor and parts cost....and I'd never perform a complete teardown and inspection without the customers consent, that's a lot of labor he never agreed to pay for.
  17. Lol...I don't mind being wet but it drives me nuts when my visor is in constant need of wiping.
  18. And not riding in the rain is also a sign of intelligence.
  19. Story motors in massillon. Bigger valves require the head to be machined...probably not in the budget, and there may not be material enough on the head to do it. I'd see if you can find a hotter cam, but make sure there's enough relief on the piston for the added lift and duration.
  20. That's dirt. When you have a hole in your crank case and you ride in the dirt, dort gets inside the motor. Hey pauly, I've never run into this before, should I try and rinse the case out with kerosene and salvage it or just tell dude his motor is fucked?
  21. Lol...sub mode with a chunk missing from the crank case. Pretty sure I know why it was burning so much oil...
  22. New customer. Brought me thus 24 yr old honda 250 quad that was burning oil like a house on fire, he figured new rings and out the door. He dropped it off and first night it puked a few quarts of oil onto my garage floor. Pulled the motor and noticed a chunk missing from the side case right where the shift shaft is. Ordered a new case, in the mean time I tore the engine down and inspected it. Cylinder was oversized and out of round. Piston was barely within spec. Side case came in today so I figured while I was waiting on an oversized piston to ship so I could get the jug bored I'd go ahead and swap out the case. This is what I found when I pulled it:
  23. Mine has side cases and a trunk....All that other stuff is for sissies.
  24. Shop down the street from me is boring a jug for a customers trx250 for $60 to go 1 mm over.
