  1. I wonder about characterizing the offending dog as "charging". The term implies aggression, but was any actually demonstrated? Was there growling, hackles raised, etc.? It might've been that the dog was just in a big hurry to meet yours, and while you perceived a charge, your dog (since he speaks dog) didn't, which is why he didn't react adversely.

  2. Oh okay, so now the guy can't shoot pepper spray without spraying himself in the face, but he's to be trusted to shoot a dog that's latched onto his leg and thrashing about, all without shooting himself? C'mon, at least be consistent with how inept you think this guy is...

  3. Cross posted from my CL ad...

Selling my custom 2004 5'x10' motorcycle and utility trailer. It's served me perfectly for years, but I need something larger and enclosed, now. This thing was built to a premium standard, and has never let me down. Several members on here have had their bikes on it on the way to and from the track! Kept in the garage over winters. Some rust, but it's all cosmetic.

-Drop tail. Makes loading WAY easier, no matter what the cargo

-Ramp gate. One hinge broken, but an easy/cheap fix for a welder.

-2000 lb axle. The more I put on it, the better it pulls!

-3 wheel chocks (installed). Haul 1 or 2 bikes. Tie down rings conveniently placed for either configuration. 4 more anchor points in the back.

    -Alloy wheels.

    -2" ball.

-All metal construction, angle iron frame and diamond plate floor. This thing is absolutely solid!

Asking $800, cash only. I am willing to deliver within a reasonable distance.

  4. If you're carrying a fogger on your belt for use as personal defense, again, you're doing it wrong.

Here's another thing to consider. There's no way the cop was being attacked. A gun is, by nature of its mechanism, a standoff weapon. So it's not as if the dog was gnawing on his leg at the time the cop decided, of all the choices available to him, to use his gun. So he was being what, chased? Barked at?

  5. It's not. It's called real life versus the TV shows. I'm starting to understand why you seem to think the way you do - you seems to lack any kind of understanding of real life policing and use of force scenarios.

Once the OC leaves the can it's not fussy about who gets it. Don't think of a cop accidentally shooting directly into his eyes - think of the cloud created by the spray. You spray air freshener you smell it, right? You spray OC, does the same thing. clouds/vapor. The general rule is that when the OC comes out while grappling, EVERYONE is at risk.

Right, who doesn't have knowledge of what? A cloud like air freshener? I don't know what you're thinking of, but OC comes out in a stream, like hornet killer or brake cleaner. Again, if you manage to get that in your eyes, particularly when spraying downwards at an animal, you're doing it wrong.

  6. I'm quite sure he had at least mace or a baton. More likely both. I think "might" should be preferred over "definitely" any day, when you're talking about the possibility of killing something that is probably very dear to someone. And kicking might not stop the dog entirely, but it'll give you separation, at least.

  7. Where do you get "unnecessarily" from? Are you saying the officer should think "Well, I am in HIS yard so I should just left him chew on me for a while to make up for it"?

I'm saying that even if that were the case, there are other options.

I value human life above a dog's life and any person acting in good faith should be allowed to defend against a dog. Everyone gets clouded by the fact it is a cop who did it. What if it was a firefighter or paramedic that had to be in the yard to gain access to an emergency scene?

You can hardly blame people for being suspicious when this type of thing happens with alarming regularity:

  8. Dogs have been bred for certain attributes, but that doesn't make them any different than any other domesticated animal. (cats, rabbits, ferrets, chickens, turkeys, ducks, pigs, horses)

It also doesn't make them any more human than any wild animal... coyotes wolves, bears, deer...

Actually, from an ethological and evolutionary standpoint, you are completely incorrect.

You had a bad experience with a dog once, one in which you probably did something wrong (not to say I'm excusing the dog...), and so you've written all dogs off. I'm sorry you've had that experience, but to let it color your objectivity like this is just ignorant.
