  1. The car to your right, failed to turn right, from a right-turn-only lane.

The car to your right chose to continue forward knowing that his lane had expired.

The car to your right chose to drive onto the sidewalk.

He flipped on his left signal but failed to slow his vehicle to allow traffic to clear to his left in order to safely enter your lane.

I don't see anything here that involves you at all and if I was behind you and you suddenly braked to allow him in, I would be irritated because he should have made the turn or sat waiting for an opening without interrupting the flow of traffic in our lane. We didn't owe him an entry. He f'd up when he didn't prepare for lane change back there like we did.

  2. While I educate myself about what bikes I should consider for upgrading to, ideas come to mind that I need advice on. Here are my current wonderings.

    1. Decide which motors are going to do what I want them to do in the ways that I want them done.
    2. Find bikes with these motors that fit the style of riding that I'm going to want to do.
    3. Decide which bike with a desirable motor has the creature comforts and accessories that I desire.

Is this a logical way of narrowing down my choices or is there a better approach you would like to share with me?

  3. Will be monitoring this thread I want to get a smoker next year. We did pulled pork in the slow cooker and it was good, but I like the smoke.

Dry rub? Store bought or homemade?

    Store bought sauce or homemade?

There is a store bought sauce I really like, I think its sweet baby rays.

I've had one of those R2D2 type Char Broil H2O water smokers for about 20 years and it's still going strong. I've made a lot of brisket in it, a few turkeys, ribs, chicken, salmon, and I don't know what else.

I use a home made rub on my brisket then wrap it in Saran Wrap overnight in the fridge. I also make my sauce. I use a recipe from a book and it always comes out right. The sauce goes over the meat after it's shredded and placed in a roasting pan, just before it goes into the oven for 45 minutes.

Try any of the recipes you find and give them a go. You'll find something that works for you.

  4. ...remind me to never ride behind you on a group ride. Brake light irritate the hell out of me.

It irritates the crap out of me too. I back away from such drivers so as to not be inclined to brake every time they touch the brake pedal.

...I can pull my front brake lever...without actually applying the brakes...and just made it a habit..

Me too. I don't want to apply the brakes all the time. I just want you to know I'm slowing or stopped.

I have done this since I started riding because I too was always afraid of being rear ended' date=' but now its second nature and I dont even notice I am doing it. I usually just tap the lever 3 times then let off and do it again when I am closer to stopping but this time actually applying the brakes on the 3rd tap.

    I'm onboard with this.

  5. I'm on my 2nd Subaru Outback. I would never buy new, because for me the depreciation is a waste of money I can spend on other things. Once you put miles on a new car, it's used anyway.

My way is to seek a vehicle with 10k miles or less per year of age. You can find them out there, just don't wait until you have to buy before you start looking.

I'm sold on Subaru with their AWD all the time. It gets me where I want to go in the nastiest of weather no matter how much snow is on the road and it's a blast to drive. It's build on a car chassis and rides well, not like a SUV on a truck frame.

A used $20,000 Subaru will last you through several winters and get you there in comfort. You will never be sorry you bought one.

  6. When she let's me get a new Ducati! Though, I have a feeling she'll get her revenge when it comes time to replace her car in about 2 years...

Do you think a car is the only thing she has on her 'demand' list? I'll bet she made out a 'demand' list way before she agreed to let you get that bike. Be ready. Her ever growing list of wishes is soon to be revealed. Oh brother, she is going to make you pay dearly now. :D

Hooligans! Every last one of them. Look at 'em. There they go ridin' them motorsickles. The streets are not safe anymore. Lock up your daughters. Here they come again. :D :D :D

  8. I've been pulled over going 45 in a 35(the road was CLEARLY marked 45) the rookie(obviously) cop asked me if I knew why I was getting pulled over. I said sure, I was going 45mph in a 45mph zone... I didn't even see the cop, but I don't speed with my kids, so I knew I was doing the speed limit no matter where he clocked me. He said he clocked me going 45mph at the speedway(valley/woodman) and I was like ok, so whats the problem? He said the speed limit was 35(ive only been driving down that for 10years, so what do I know) so I argued with him about it then he was like well it was in a school zone(which it wasn't, atleast not where he clocked me, about 500ft up the road was the school zone) I asked if he clocked me there and he didn't but he said I didn't slow down(you dont need breaks to slow down and I didn't regardless) before he even mentioned a ticket though I said just give me a damn ticket, I'll just fight it and win you fucking roookie asshole. He ended up just saying I'll let you off with a warning this time and went on his way.

Some police, especially rookies, have nothing better to do than harass us, I've never got a ticket I felt I didn't deserve by an experienced cop, except one, but me and said cop had a loooooong history.

I think there is nothing worse than a bored cop on a slow night. I've seen issues made where no issues existed before a couple of cops walked up and provoked one.

Law enforcement is in many ways predatory and victims are sought out for the extraction of money from their pockets. I try hard not to be a victim.

  9. 1) ...there's 2 of Miami Township's finest pulling in.

    2) They don't give a shit...

    3) ...the judge may not side with you no matter what argument you have (or what the truth is).

    4) The cities and townships need money and look at vehicle violations as revenue.

You have two against one. They will make sure they have their stories straight and it might not resemble the truth if you go to court.

They don't have to care. You are just another perp on the road, in their book. We are not one of them. They will not be 'wrong' when they pull you over. They can fabricate any reason they want to get you to the side of the road and then they can keep you there until they've had enough of you.

Anyway you look at it, there will be money taken out of your pocket and given to someone else. It's a tax extracted from anyone they can make a charge stick to.

I stay under the radar and try not to stand out. There is always someone with authority wanting to make a point about having power that you don't have and can't do anything about. Power is often abused and I don't want to be the victim of the day.

Cops are just like you and me.....in ways. In other ways, when there is more than one of them, the more distance you can keep between them and yourself, the less likely you are to be caught up in something that you may have had no part in. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, or you fit the description.

If you do have to officially deal with them, you better mind your "P's and Q's" and remember all your manners and attitudes of respect because they don't have to care. They just have to come up with something they can make stick to you and if there is two of them, your story will never hold up against the one that they come up with.

  10. I got that book from the Library before I got my bike. I read it and it explained countersteering so that I understood it. Now that I've been riding, I'm ready to read it again so that I can put the information to use and have a better understanding of what's going on.

  11. It was nearly 15 degrees difference between Newark and Columbus this morning. I intended to ride to work this morning but it was colder than I expected. When I got to work, I wished I had ridden. I ended up taking the car.

On the way home, I saw a lot of bikes buzzing along and couldn't help but wonder which of you could have been one of them. As soon as I got home I jumped on my bike and took a ride. It felt good.

Yesterday, I did the same thing. I ended up going down to Somerset and west on Rt 22 into Lancaster, then north on Rt 37 heading back home. Today, it was a cruise up Rt 79, west on a side road (Blacksnake Rd), then south on Martinsburg Rd. and back to Newark.

I don't know how I'm going to stand not riding when the snow is on the ground. What's the cure? Move to Florida?

  12. :nono:

I think you may have your physics a little confused. :D

    Craig

 Yeah, I know. It was more wishful thinking than an expectation that speed of airflow would actually warm me. The colder it is in the morning on your way to work on your motorcycle, the more you wish that air friction would warm you.

However, there is a basic thermodynamic relationship between pressure and temperature from compression of the air ahead of a hypersonic vehicle. A hot shock wave is created in front of the vehicle and a convective heat transfer occurs between the shock wave and the vehicle through superheated plasma.

What do you mean 85 mph is not hypersonic???

  13. Dude, nobody pays NADA Retail for a bike in a private party sale. You'd be foolish to pay that from a dealer! NADA price is an average of all the regional dealer sales from the previous quarter, so you're looking at peak season prices as reported by dealers from 1-3 months ago. Plus, the value set for a used 2012 is likely based on a very small number sold of that model, so one or two high sale prices are gonna skew the number significantly.

A used bike, end of riding season, priced at $10k? Not likely.

That's all good to know. I never knew how they got their numbers. I'll remember this when I go shopping.

  14. What's the fastest you've taken your current bike to? Was it to the limiter?

    There's a limiter?

According to the speedo, I've had it up to around 85. I backed off because I was approaching traffic. I'm afraid to press it beyond that. That's fast for me. It was on the freeway on the way to work one chilly morning. I was hoping air friction would warm me up and overcome the wind chill. It didn't work.

  15. You're doing the right thing by planning another season on your 500 and then doing a 600 - 650 bike step up.

Getting more experience counts a lot for a novice rider - favorite quote on that...

    Luck & Experience

"You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck."

When a newbie rider buys more bike than they can handle, they use the luck up much faster than if they learn on a ride that's a better fit.

This is where my head is right now. Keep me reminded of this. Cooter's suggestion to get the bike I want and to resist the temptation of twisting the righthand grip past the point of good sense is like putting an exotic beauty in front of me and asking me not to look.
