  1. This is a when does the original oil go in the bike thread.

I figured it didn't go in until prep because when you buy a lawn mower or any other small engine machine it doesn't have oil in it.

I was looking for clarification from someone who has worked in the industry prepping bikes. Not pissed or anything, but telling me to read the manual is jackassery. All it says is 20 hrs first service.

I didnt intend to come accross in that way. in my experience: a ton of new owners disregard an owners manual completely.

but to answer the original question, it comes with fluid. some salesman really like to play up the "new vehicle prep" as something better than it is, to justify charging you $395, or what have you on new models.

    sorry for the confusion

  2. Ok, all of you that are saying it's ok. Please go out to your garage and look at your bike and say to yourself. 'It's OK to run six year old oil to save 40 bucks.'

agreed, cant hurt to change, and its relatively cheap (compared to engine failure).

I also recommend to open the owners manual and follow any and all break in procedures.

  3. his reaction is what I meant as unreal. also the addition of her ghost to the already complex sequence of events.

    quoting myself is fun

finally the lori ghost is playing out some. still not my favorite conflict.

    last episode was uneventfull.

they better make up for it. get on with the war already.

and wheres the black dude/son from episode 1!

  4. cool man, sorry if a few of the junkies gave a poor impression... theres bad apples in every bushel.

if you like to ride the curves, im a frequenter of the falmouth area of ky. 10/22 and what not. ive been known to take a stroll down EMRR from time to time too.

we'll have to get out and ride, represent the fairfield area, lol!

  5. What would you recommend as a toolset that will get me pretty close to everything I'll need, excluding the special order-by-itself stuff?

I understand that the 260-pc set might have a lot of SAE stuff, but doesn't it also have all of the other stuff I need mixed in? (I could be wrong.)

yeah usually. also larger SAE stuff crosses to metric

    1 1/4 = 32mm

    15/16 = 24mm

    7/8 = 22mm

    13/16 = 21mm... kinda

    3/4 = 19mm

    5/8 = 16mm kinda

    1/2 = 13mm

    im sure theres others too.

the benefit to buying the bulk sets is the discount on individual tools and the convenience.

  6. I have a TTR 225 that I will be selling. Electric start. Runs well. Missing some plastic so cosmetics are a bit off but like I said runs well. Good trail bike or beginner dirt bike.

$850 OBO. I'll look for some pics if interested.

    Mary

where is this located? my girlfriend has been looking for one and we're driving to columbus tomorrow with the trailer.

  7. at the IMS in indy, I had the chance to test fit a bunch of different adventures.

the r1200gs was hands down my favorite. the flat twin has such a low CG, the bike is effortless to come of the side stand. I love that. its a hefty bike, but feels light. seat height is huge, not going to lie. its the tallest bike ive ever been on, and is the only bike ive ever tip toed on (im 6'2").

after having the small experiece I had on that machine, there would be no way id be interested in anything else.

if you truely want something that can handle more serious offroad, look into the ktm. its more geared towards that side of the spectrum.

  8. Personal suggestion on a metal box? I don't know what I'd be looking for.

And I can understand the quality tools argument, but I've heard good things about HF's lifts at the least.

Hadn't even thought of the radio. Better tack on an auxiliary cable too!

sears has a deal on some entry level boxes for around 170 on up if youre part of.the craftsman club.

about air pump (compressor) just get a bicycle pump from any sporting goods store. I spent $20 on the one I have at my house and it works great for motorcycles.

start with a craftsman mechanic tool set. they have many combinations ranging from a few bucks to $1000. spend around 150-300 on that, then pick up some other tools as you need them. you'll figure out what you need as you go.

about the used tools: no thanks, but I rely on my tools for a living, so im kind of a tool snob.

  9. If it doesn't ping, it's not necessary. You bubby's and your fancy shmancy gas.

    this is a true statement.

you should actually run the lowest rating possible.

running a higher octane where its not required is not only a waste, but can actually hurt performance.

remember, octane rating essentially is gasolines resistance to ignite. the higher rated, the more resistant.

the reason some claim smoother running and other such claims is usually due to the better additive package in the "plus" and "premium" blends.

however, I wouldnt recommend running lower octane rated fuel than what your manufacturer recomends.

  10. welcome!

like bubba said, assfaultjunkies and localriders

bike nights at murphys tavern on wednesday, comet lounge on tuesday, and euro bike night last thursday in old milford. theres also the harley bike nights at both quaker steak locations.

  11. I could be considered pretty close to an expert in tools.

im a mechanic by trade and my job requires that I have my own tools.

for what youre doing, id recommend going to sears hardware (tricounty mall has a great selection) and starting.with the basics.

tool collections dont happen overnight. mine is 10years strong and has way more invested than id like to admit.

id say you could start out spending 150-500 at sears and be able to tackle any job you could get into. most jobs on bikes dont require specialty tools. things like air tools (and the new battery tools) are nice, and faster, but start off with hand tools and work your way up.

one thing to remember about tools: theyre worth hardly any money after you purchase them. so dont get in too deep too quickly.
