  1. I went through a 1911 phase in the 90s - several springfield government models, a few colts and a very nice Colt Combat Elite with competition enhancements. Fun guns and there's nothing like a 1911, but I'm so over them these days. I don't compete, so the Elite was traded long ago and lesser models lost their charm. Today I have a Kahr CM45 that shoots great and is accurate enough to get a passing compliment from Mike See, plus it's eminently carry-able. For home defense, I'd opt for a higher cap .45 than what a 1911 offers.

Until the DR is fuel injected, it's not on my radar. I had a DR650. I hate carbs and have vowed to never own another carb'd vehicle.

I understand, and I also would like a lightweight trail bike that's street-legal for only a small weight penalty, and has FI.  Right now, the WR250R is the best "value" in town for that purpose but it's still expensive, hard to find used and reputedly buzzy on the highway.  KTMs and Betas are lighter, have more power, but are even more expensive.

I was hoping the CRF250L Rally would be The One but at 350lbs, it is a lot of weight for a 250cc FI engine, let alone one detuned by Honda for greater reliability.  My $1500 1991 XR250L bored out to 280cc and re-carbed and piped produces similar power, but at 50 lbs lighter, I bet the Rally will feel weaker.  My XRL is far less pleasant to kickstart cold, but I can't see spending thousands more for something I'm going to thrash in Wayne anyway, and for longer trips, I still love my V-Strom 650 ABS.

I've had my DR650 for 18 months and remain impressed.  I've replaced the seat cover, added optional Wolfman bags and a tail shelf, better pegs, lower sprocket, bars and a few other farkles, and it's pretty comfortable up to 6-8 hours of riding.  With aggressive tires and luggable tractor-like torque, it does pretty well in single-track - just don't do wicked jumps or expect to fling it around like a college cheerleader.

Joe, that KTM 690 remains on my list as a potential replacement for my DR and XRL, but damn they're tall to a 30" inseam.  I'm also musing the idea of a Zero FX electric motorcycle or a very lightweight conventional woods-only bike and trailer.

I had a 250L dual sport... and thought it was just a little shy on power. Really had to ride it hard to get it up on the highway. Wish they would have just jumped the engine size to 300cc with the rest of the family.

I REALLY wanted to like this bike (great looks, reliability, seat height for mortals, 2.7 gal tank and reasonable price), but I think you're spot on with the 300cc observation.  First, it's heavy at 350 lbs wet whereas a WR250R is 50 lbs lighter.  Why couldn't they have bored it out just a little to get more oomph, even if it added another 15 lbs?  At 350, they're only 25 lbs shy of a DR650 bush pig, which has almost twice the power, comfort and equal seat height and ground clearance; plus you can get lightly used ones all day long for $3-4k and have a vast aftermarket at the ready for the obligatory farkleitis that follows.

  4. Planning to take a DR650 and XR250L to Wayne via New Straitsville late Sunday afternoon.  We're gonna stay off the higher traffic main corridor as much as possible, and "Dorr Run's quad mud pits" as a friend puts it.  Any other tips for minimizing the chance of getting bulldozed over?

  5. Ouch...my biggest fear is seriously breaking down in BFE - especially alone. If something like the CDI takes a dump (pretty common on XRL's) there isn't a damn thing you can do but swap it out with a good one.

Which L do you have Scuba? I just picked up a 91 XR250L on Friday.

  6. I am out for Sunday. Swing is doing a upper TOT on Sunday, that might help you scrub in the new tires. As Monday draws near the weather might change for the better. We can always do another trail ride some time. I will check back here on Sunday. Ride Safe. B.

    Sounds great, thanks again B!

  7. B-Mac, Monday might be a wash-out for Wayne if the forecast is correct, but we'll see. My TR8/T63 pair came in this week, so I'm hoping to get Jeff's help shoeing them on by then in any case. I could also be free Sunday for another location if you're itching to get some dirt then.

  8. The gun entry interests me, wonder where that one came from. Most people wouldn't say one way or the other.

For sure. One could certainly derive probable gun owners from purchase transaction history, social media postings and memberships, search history and friend social graphs. Correlate them and I'd say you could get a 90% confidence of who to interrogate :-(

  9. Scott, I would be happy to help in any way I can. Are you getting new Tires this Wednesday and want to plan a ride soon or will you have them mounted and ready to ride this Wednesday? Looks like Wednesday will be sunny and 78deg. I have a Golf date planned with my wife that day but let me know what works for you. I may be able to get a rain check.  Also I would be happy to help host a Swingset Halloween Wayne Ride here at the house like we did when I first moved here in 2011.

    Mac.

    Thanks Mac,

Wow is my back feeling the house move I helped with on Saturday - not sure what that will mean for my appetite to ride this weekend, but I hope I'm past the worst of it by Friday morning.

My tires are coming in sometime this week and Jeff & I hope to have them mounted by Thursday evening, maybe to ride Friday or sometime the rest of the weekend. I'm told to avoid Wayne on Saturdays and Sunday's though, unless it's early Sunday, so if I'm not back to normal by Friday, I'll likely try to get out Monday.

  10. Wonder where they are getting the data from?

Nice that it is all in one place and of course its legal to have a private database.

Have to wonder what is in some databases, Google for example. Nothing is private would seem to be the case in the internet age.

Imagine the incredible treasure trove Google has at their disposal. They're constantly hiring Data Scientists too. I bet some of their people know more about behavioral cause and effect probability than anyone has in the history of humanity.

  11. B-Mac I (Scott/Rudderfeet) had the pleasure to ride with you a couple weeks back but it wasn't until I watch a few of your videos did I realize you're a frigging beast with that Strom!

Except now I've got s complaint to register. Your videos have given me such a hard on for Wayne's trails - I've never been - that I can't wait to take my DR out there with a fresh set of knobbies coming Wednesday. Maybe I could beg you into schooling me in the ways of Wayne someday, perhaps even joined by Craig, Jeff and Steve?

  12. Hi John, I escorted 2 years ago, enjoyed helping the riders, and would like to help again this year.  Put me down as Full-Day Sunday.

Note that I volunteer on behalf of Huntington and provide a primary level of Pelotonia I.T. web site support.  Last year I needed to be on hand to restore rider registration, peloton management and donation functions through the ride weekend, so I first want to give them the option for me to provide a similar role this year.  Given the nature of I.T. it's possible (though not probable) I'd need to cancel last-minute to tend to the site since the week leading up and that weekend are peak donation times.

I'll be riding a yellow DR650 with stock muffler and soft bags with plenty of room for water, inner-tubes and spanners.  I use a Sena 20S, so calling in ride reports is straightforward.
