  1. Depending on year on the old small blocks, one side valve cover would be the intake into the crank case, and the other side would be the vent. Anybody who has owned one of those old setups can attest they are always covered in a little bit of oil. We used to call them "breathers" because really I think they work both ways. I remember when the hot setup was to just replace them with small K&N filters. It's been a long time but I am pretty sure my pontiac requires manifold vaccum to operate the PCV. I have one hose from the intake to the valley cover PCV and then a "breather" in the valve cover. Do the LS engines require manifold vacuum to operate? if so, where does it hook up? you need an air intake and a vent. all I am saying is the vent doesn't need to go back into the intake to divert the oil mist back into the engine for emissions purposes. It still might need vacuum. That's all it is. The filter pulls oil out of the air. if your vent side is the one hooked up to manifold vacuum, then pulling the oil mist out of that air would do something.
  2. if you look at an old chevy small block the breather is a mushroom thing stuck in the valve cleaner fill hole that vents to air. Before that it was a hose in the block that vented into the air cleaner or a 90 degree fitting from the oil dipstick to the holley carb. Other than reducing hydrocarbon output by filtering oil mist back into the engine I don't see the point in it connecting to the intake. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v426/prostreetcamaro/P1000351.jpg I did find this article: http://www.lsxtv.com/tech-stories/engine/tech-crankcase-pressure-control-oil-and-air-control/ could be marketing mumbo-jumbo to sell you a moroso oil separator bit it makes some sense, no oil mist to burn fewer carbon deposits.
  3. no hoonicorn no care. uses subaru or focus rally car for 6 previous videos. Builds epic AWD 1965 mustang for video #7. uses it for 1 video. back to focus based rally car. disappointed.
  4. Ok so here is how it worked out: When they called me mid morning yesterday, they said it would take 2 days just to order the part as they didn't have it in stock. I authorized and figured I would wait. They then call me at 5:30 pm yesterday to tell me car is done. Apparently they had located the parts at Kelly BMW and had them sent over. In the end they "couldn't" align the car using the machine. Something about their machine interfering with my front struts (which are stock BMW by the way) so they got it as close as they can. Car tracks straight. They split the bill with me on the alignment so the whole thing came in roughly just under $200 cheaper. Car tracks straight and the only issue seems to be the camber which is over stock spec by -1 degree. I asked about the diagnostic fee being higher than their hour but got the usual company "it's just our policy" reply. Since they were already eating the bulk of the alignment I didn't push. So overall I am happy again. I feel like they went above and beyond getting the parts rather than waiting for 2 days, and took care of me on the alignment issue. As for the service writer, she gets flustered when you ask her direct questions, it's a nervous thing I guess. I don't know. She showed me all paperwork I asked for and even got me the old parts to inspect so I can't complain.
  5. I was wondering when the president of my fan club would show up. You missed a heck of a party. As always you are full of sound and fury but ultimately signify nothing. Keep up the good work!
  6. Made me laugh out loud. Now all my co-workers are staring.
  7. Lots of people complain about retainer fees. And sometimes Atty's waive them. does the diagnostic really come out of the tech's pay or the dealer's pocket? I guess at the heart of it, I'm having a hard time with them (not) justifying the flat diagnostic fee, and why it is more than their hourly rate. maybe some of that is the shortcoming of the service writer and her "take it or leave it" attitude, but that still breaks down to customer service experience. This is the first time the car was at MAG. The last service on the car was several months ago and it wasn't an issue then. The recommendations MAG had went 6months out and the feeling I got was that they were trying to convince me to do it now. I got this feeling because they actually said "would you like to take care of this now" after each item. not really bitching about the labor rate. Indy shop will have a cheaper rate I get that. It's really just the Diagnostic fee and having it be more than the labor rate. I don't, I wanted the other side of the story.
  8. nah I'm lazy....results speak for themselves. have a nice day!
  9. so, how do you all feel about the word "irregardless"?
  10. Thank you. So this kind of highlights the difference between the dealership and the independent shop. A dealer usually charges book time, an independent shop charges actual time. If the book time on a job is 3 hours and the tech does the job in 1.5 hours the dealer still charges the customer 3 hours (unless the customer complains) and pockets the difference. An independent shop charging actual time is going to charge less overall because even if his diagnostic time is the same, the actual time in the repair is likely to be less. When I was a motorcycle tech it was a joke how far inflated the book time was vs the actual time to do the job. I get it, it's the dealer's profit and incentive for hiring good techs. But it also gives them some wiggle room to absorb things like simple diagnostic. Most service writers also have a small budget to write off some expenses (I think the audi service department can write off a maximum $10K per car) to cover screw ups and such. MAG's hourly rate is $125. Their diagnostic rate is beyond their hourly at around $140. It also feels like they did extra "diagnostics" to justify the cost even when the situation didn't warrant it. I think am going to bitch to them about the diagnostic rate and see what they do. If nothing comes to it then I'll just chalk the $140 up to the value of their customer service and convince my wife we are better off going with someone else in the future for all cars.
  11. I have had many friends tell me over the years how tech's get beat on warranty work for the diagnostic portion. Shortcoming of the flat rate system. I agree someone should get paid for their time. And I have no issue with charging me a diagnostic fee if I decided to have the work done elsewhere - they should get paid for their time. My issue, and someone please make an argument here against it, is that MAG wants to charge me the diagnostic cost AND the full book time of the repair in addition to, not included in, if I choose for them to do the work in a non-warranty situation. I feel like this is not the norm, am I wrong? I also feel like this is a pretty clear message that they don't want my business and that good will from one brand does not carry over to the other brands in the same dealership group.
  12. http://manuals.harborfreight.com/manuals/61000-61999/61454.pdf Break in the new Air Compressor as follows: a. Turn the Power Switch off and unplug the unit. Insert a male coupler (sold separately) into the female Quick Coupler and fully open all regulators and valves. b. Plug in the Power Cord. c. Turn the Power Switch ON. d. Let the unit run for 30 minutes. Air will expel freely through the Coupler. e. Turn the Power Switch OFF. f. Unplug the Power Cord and remove the male coupler and... 1. Check the oil level before operation. Fill the Pump Crankcase (39) with SAE 30W, non-detergent, Air Compressor Oil (sold separately). important: running the air compressor with the incorrect amount of oil will cause damage to the equipment and void the warranty. to prevent damage, do not use with overfilled or low oil. Slowly fill to full line, wait 2 minutes and fill back up to full line. compressor has small passages that will fill slowly. 2. The oil level should be at the center of the “full” level on the oil level sight glass, as shown in Figure H, below. Add oil as needed to maintain this level. Do not let the oil level go below the center dot (LOW as shown below) and do not overfill the oil so that it is above the center dot (OVERFILL as shown below) on the sight glass if you read some of the other forums on this most people check the oil, find the level incorrect, drain and add fresh oil, do the break in procedure, drain and add fresh oil again, and then proceed to use the compressor normally.
  13. At this point start calling places like pick n pull and asking if they can pick up a titled shell. wont know for sure till you pick up the phone.
  14. what to know real irony? you do all sorts of stuff that leads to crap like this: http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124131 and you want to ban a guy who doesn't break any forum rules and tries to get people engaged into intelligent discussions because you don't like his "tone" just saying.....
  15. Did a search for whiny bitch threads about MAG and didn't see one more recent than 2011 so I figured I would start a new one. Wife insists the Audi go to an Audi dealership. This way the car fax gets updated and she can claim "audi serviced" when it gets put up for sale. Other than a diagnostic screw up in 2013 involving a wheel bearing (which they made right) they have gone out of their way to be accommodating, friendly, and nice. I even met IV Rings there and he was a super guy to talk to in person. So last week I bought my parent's old 2006 3-series (they both bought new cars). Over the weekend it developed a pull to the right and rather than be bothered with lying on my back in the dark in an open parking lot doing suspension work i figured I would just take it to MAG. before going over I took a look under the car and saw that the stock right side upper control arm bushing wasn't in the greatest shape so I had an idea about what the issue was. Get a call this morning: it's the "thrust arm" bushing. needs replacement, recommend both sides. Approx $860. $95 per bushing, 3-4 hours per labor (yeah, right!), and an alignment. Not the worst in the world, def high but at least explainable. Then comes all the other "things" like cabin air filters, and being two months away from the next oil change, and literally a laundry list of things that felt more like a "money grab" than actual preventative maint. Add that in to a service writer who was both kind of cold and not very good at explaining things and I just don't feel like it's good service. The other thing that is rubbing me the wrong way is the "diagnostic fee". Maybe it is because of the earlier screw-up with audi concerning this that I don't usually get charged the fee with work done on the audi, or maybe it's just that it's more than the hourly labor rate ($140) and gets paid whether they work on it or not that is bothering me. I feel like the industry standard is to waive the diagnostic fee if the shop does the repairs (that is what my old BMW dealer in NY did in the late 1990s with my E34s), am I wrong about this? car wasn't showing any engine codes so I don't see why they would need to hook up the computer (but they told me they did anyway). Anyway, thoughts? TL/DR: First world problems: after excellent audi service my experience with MAG BMW feels like they are trying to set my wallet on fire.
  16. this. When I was buying a new compressor I did a lot of reading up on it and you could divide the stories of success/failure right along those who followed the break in vs those who didn't. I ended up buying the pancake compressor from HF and followed the break in and 2 years so far and no real issue. I use it for light work though (impact gun is the only air tool, all my whizz tools are electric).
  17. I'm sure there are people who would have them, I know because I have them with some members of this board in real life, but they get drowned out or bullied into hiding by the vast majority who have an overwhelming need to just spew hatred for sport. Once you have a good dogpile going it's hard to stop or not want to join in.
  18. Not a troll attempt or "material". I'm being sincere. It's obvious that your frustrations are looking for a vent and you find it in name calling online. I'm not looking to insult you, as I pointed out before all you'll do is get really nasty and stupid (and it won't be funny) so what's the point. I'm just letting you know I understand you are frustrated and I sympathize. You don't have to keep putting on an act.
  19. I'm not condescending, I'm from New York City. If that isn't a bumper sticker somewhere it should be. just do what I do...read anything I write in Lou Reed's voice, instantly makes it better. See you all at CC&C.
  20. I didn't want to interrupt your crying about how unfulfilling, unstatisfying, and not challenging your job (which you oddly claim you are not unhappy at) is. Seriously the sadness and desperation were so palpable all the stray cats and dogs in a 50 mile radius were running away. My heart really went out to you it was so sad. Honestly, I don't really want to pick on you - we have all been stuck in a rut and I'm pretty sympathetic. I don't have much advice for you since your career path doesn't involve going back to school and incurring hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loan debt, but you should probably change some of your habits as a start to setting yourself up for success. Two weeks ago you drove an emotionally unstable person on this forum to make threats to come to your house with a baseball bat - whatever you are doing to cause stuff like this probably isn't healthy. Life choices man....life choices.
  21. I say that constantly, but it usually means the person has a pretty well thought out argument that they have communicated clearly. Something like that on CR appears to be about as rare as a stripper with two Ph.D.s.
