  1. Hey all, After two close calls this weekend, one with a road raging TSA agent and one with a cell phone zombie, I am thinking I may want to install a dash cam in my car. However, I am starting from knowledge point zero on this, although I do play with car and bike mounted action cams those are temporary. So where do I begin? I want to do this for under $100 per car, is that an unreasonable cost? I want it to turn on with my ignition, but am a little leery about hard wiring it in with cars with the CAN BUS system. I would like it to maybe be transferable to the motorbikes if possible, but I am fine with just riding with the action cams on them if it is not possible. I don't want it to need my phone to operate. Data can be expensive some times and my aging iphone is already running out of memory and starting to act buggy. maybe having it store data on a sim card since I am already setup for that. so thoughts? recommendations?

  3. Whatever car you decide to buy, Lets talk for a minute on how you are going to pay for it. If you need to finance.... Shop for the right credit. Comparison shop using resources like bankrate.com and see what low rate you can get approved for. Keep in mind, low rate used car loans from major lenders will limit the car to under 100K miles and under 5 years old and purchased from a franchise dealer. That being said I got a loan on my audi at 1.99% from BofA back in 2011 that I bought from a BMW dealer. I also got approved for a 2.49% loan from PenFed a couple of years ago for a 10 year old under 100K car that I did not buy. You don't want to open too many credit lines, so choose wisely. Once you have the approval letter you can start to shop. If the dealer that that you are buying from has a finance department you can have them run it as well. Car dealers make money off the credit they sell you, so their incentive is to sell you the highest interest rate they can reasonably justify. If you have been pre-approved for a low interest loan the dealer is required to be able to match it (at least in NY, is that true in Ohio?). Why is that important? well, dealers might give you more off the car if you take their financing as opposed as third party financing which is just like a cash purchase for the car. The dealer makes more profit off the interest so you might come out ahead if you are saavy with the math by taking a lower purchase price with a higher interest rate. When having a finance discussion with the dealer, avoid the "four square" conversation. It's cheap insurance plus it gives you a punch list on known issues to fix as you go. good luck.
  4. Yeah well maybe don't buy a piece of shit project truck. Go out and find a decent, clean, used Frontier or Tacoma with a stick and buy that. Hell even those old base model ford Rangers with a stick and a four can be found for cheap clean with a good service history. I keep telling you motorcycles are where it is at anyway, way better than cars as toys. If you have a truck you can haul all manner of toys home.

However reading someone explain their emotional connection to cars to a bunch of guys who ALREADY understand where he is coming from is like sitting there and listening to your buddy read every valentines day card he gave to his wife. you think we don't understand you but we get it more than you know, we've been you, and we have not only been to this rest stop, we took the piss, bought the t-shirt, overpaid for gas, and sent the postcards. Your experience is not unique. What many of the "older" guys here understand is that you can't say you have made an informed decision on any car until you have actually driven it. We have all been down this road and had cars "surprise" us with how good they worked despite not being our first choice in the looks department or worse, being something we absolutely lust for every time we see it only to have it ride and drive like a buckboard with a broken wheel. Every suggestion here was made with the effort of trying to help you, you owe it to yourself to at the very least to drive the car recommended before just dismissing and saying "meh". Car buying is always somewhat of a compromise, and you can't figure out what things you are willing to compromise on unless you have the whole picture. capishe? that is all.

The S was a unibody car with an exterior roll cage that they hung all the body panels on, and the L was a monocoque with space frame bracing. Those cars came out at a time when the exotic's were also toying with monocoque space frame hybrids and I imagine this is GM's marketing pushing the buzz word "space frame", because raceccar, when it really wasn't a true space frame in the pure sense. They did this with the Fiero also prior to the Saturn and do you know how much of the Fiero uses a "Space Frame"?   10. I think clay was confusing monocoque (which includes uni-body) with "space frame". Saturn was a monocoque that they hung plastic body panels on, as opposed to cars like the camaro which were uni-body and the rear quarter panels and tail panel were the outside finished body. To be fair, most high end road cars like lamborghini are monocoque chassis with bodies laid over them, and then some space frame sub assemblies for added rigidity. A true space frame car is something like a porsche 917: or the chassis on a tube frame ducati: the problem these days, is that the terms have become somewhat interchangible, because you have some motor-journalists that don't really know the definition of either and use the terms interchangeably. I have no doubt that the new C8 is going to be a monocoque with some small space frame sub assembly structure, because that is how the higher end mid engine cars like the aventador and ferrari 488 are made (see the x-style cross bracing in the engine bay - that is probably what is bending when they are talking about the cars bending "frames"):

Oh, also that some of your "requirements" are unrealistic for the type of car you want and the budget you have to work with. 2012 seems pretty arbitrary a number, why that one and not the usual used finance number of 5-10 years (2009) or newer?
  13. Penfed has no age restriction, but it does have mileage restrictions. If you are a "certified member", whatever that means, they will lend you 110% of the NADA value if the vehicle is under 100K miles. If you are not a certified member or the vehicle has between 100k and 125K miles they will lend 80% of the value and the terms longer than 36months are not available. I think to unlock the longer 60 month loan you also need to have a minimum value of $15K. I recommended them to DJ, and he hasn't told me they have done anything bad to him so....I still think they are a good lender esp for weirdo older cars the banks won't touch.

  16. So my question is, does this service offer insurance to the Owner? I saw where you asked them about Renter's coverage, but Toro for cars offers Owner's insurance with $1M in liability coverage. If this place has a similar policy, then sure, why not. If they don't then you will need to look at a commercial insurance policy for your bike which can get prohibitively expensive. $1m in liability would cover you if the renter gets hurt on your bike and wants to sue you. But keep in mind they can't just sue you for a traffic accident they caused or were the victim of. It would have to be because of something you did (like modify the bike in a manner inconsistent with DOT laws and that caused the accident). You are still required to keep up on the maintenance, and in some cases I would be extra cautious about documenting that that was done by having the bike serviced by a shop and documenting the tire age and wear. Personally it sounds like fun. I'll be honest, I have had the fortune and great luck to have near strangers let me ride some wonderful and fantastic machines, from Norton model 16's and matchless G50s to brand new bmw S1000RRs and Ducati panagales. Accordingly I am pretty free about lending my bike out - 4 different people took their motorcycle license road test on my 1975 cb750K. I ask a lot of questions of people before they take off with my bike, and sometimes I will ride with them, but if you have a valid motorcycle license, insurance, and a modicum of riding experience - then why not. Bike sharing is part of what makes this hobby fun. I'm a little disappointed in reading this thread and so many people are "nope, god forbid they wreck my precious machine" instead of "I don't want to see someone get hurt." We buy insurance to replace the bike, but people can't be replaced as easy. I don't know that I would sleep at night if someone hurt themselves on my motorcycle because of me, but if they wrecked it and walked away fine...well...it can always be rebuilt...again.... When I get another new reliable motorcycle, I might try this, if the liability ins question checks out.
  17. the only problem I see with a GTO is that it might be too old to get financing for being an 04-06, and finding one with under 100k miles to meet some of the credit union requirements for specialty car financing. otherwise +1 for a GTO. The problem with the big tech companies is that they are big companies, and therefore enjoy all the same tax dodges and loopholes that other big companies, like GE in the past, take advantage of to avoid paying their fair share. I don't think we need to "single out" the tech industry to tax when what really needs to happen is to close some of those exemptions, dodges, and loopholes, and have the entire large corporate sector actually start paying into the system. But I don't know that any politician in any party is going to say or do that since they all accept donations from the very companies that lobbied for those exemptions in the first place. We don't need NEW taxes singling out a specific group, just fix the old tax system that allows Amazon, Priceline, International Paper, General Electric, Ryder, and pretty much the entire energy sector (including AEP) to avoid paying into the tax system. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/09/business/economy/corporate-tax-report.html BTW, we could have a whole conversation about the energy sector alone that is granted an exclusive monopoly by the gov't, allowed to operate as a for profit, and gets a tax exemption on top of it. Public utility and monopolistic for profit company aren't compatible concepts.

  22. Hey all, So here's the situation: I have an old 1974 ironhead that runs a Morris Magneto (converted Fairbanks Morse tractor mag). I let the bike sit for a year (I know) and now it has weak spark to the plugs. I'm kind of jammed up at the moment in my single car garage and can't get the time/space to really dig into it. I am looking for a shop that id familiar with old ironheads and magnetos and can handle this work. Most HD guys I talk to these days aren't super keen on this old junk and their eyes glaze over when I start to talk to them about it. Tom Reiser's shop is out of business (anybody know where he went?) and nobody is picking up the phone at the Big Bike Shop (and also not opening the door, I went there twice during hours - nobody home). I have a feeling it is just the condenser, maybe the coil, but I don't want to just start throwing money at the problem if the magnets are bad. thanks in advance.

It's paid 0 federal income tax for the last two years, but it payed $1.2 billion and $957 million in state and local taxes for the last 2 years across all the states it operates. so yeah, it paid fuckall in federal taxes. But this was the same complaint with General Electric a decade ago, and has been going on for some time. I am with you on discounted rates, but not the USPS as a whole. Although we won't know because it's considered national security, I do believe the relationship was profitable for both.
