Last year was a shitty year with zero rain for the last few months of the season, so it wasn't just you with a terrible yard. A few of my neighbors watered their yards every single day and it looked fine. I didn't feel the need to go broke watering my lawn, so I didn't. Basically, it doesn't matter how much stuff you put on the lawn if there isn't any water for it.

I'm running a bracket at work and most of them have atleast 5 losses already. Some had NM in the final 4. Very few had Pitt losing.
