  1. To take this thought a step further, I would also consider working on only certain types of cars or doing certain types of work that you could specialize in and therefore charge a premium. There will always be people that want repairs done for cheap. However, if you can become known as the local expert in some area, you can charge a premium for that and not only control the work you do, but charge a premium for it. Consider the unique knowledge and expertise you and your Dad have, and see if you can leverage that.

I agree, that is why I work on 'fun' classics.

  2. If I was you, I would get it cleaned up and start learning to play. I just started to learn a few weeks ago and loving it. My kids are taking guitar lessons and I am learning from them. We bought an acoustic Washburn.
  3. Vinny,

Yes, I believe there is still a need for the small backyard mechanic for the smaller jobs. Keep it a hobby and enjoy the few extra dollars you pull in. You can pick and chose jobs, based on the difficulty level.

If I can't tackle something, I have two hobbyist near me that helps me out. One of them is a retired Toyota master mechanic. He does some side jobs for folks and charges much less than the the big shops and does quite well for his hobby. I work on older classics as a hobby for people near by me and helps pays for my auto hobby.

  4. Vinny,

I have a compact diesel 4 wheel drive tractor(Yanmar 1610D) with a 5 foot bucket on a front end loader and a 5 foot rear blade. My driveway is around 260 feet long. This set up was one of the best investments I ever made. I bought a whole shipping container of them 10 years ago from Japan. I have been using this set up for the last 10 years, and the similar JD would have cost 2x more than I have in my setup. However, since we have a commercial property I will be looking for a newer truck with a plow set up for next year.

    Sam,

Do you have any accounts out my way?
