They dont make any of those wheels in 4x100, or any that I could find on jegs for that matter that were for drag! Damn them!
-
Damn, so what ended up taking it off? My problem is the previos owner didn't paint it soon enough, and so there is surface rust UNDER the paint, which I hope all comes off.
-
maybe they did something different back in the 60's for paint, lead based?
-
Sweet, thanks guys! I'll try and find that segels place first, if not I'll just hit up the local autozone. This won't be hard to clean, as its a tube chassis, but what will clean this remover shit off well?

I'm stripping my project down to bare metal and grinding it works fine, but will take a long time. I'm looking for something that I can wipe/spray on and let it soak or something, to get it to bare metal. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

I agree, I have passed MANY cops, in many states/cities at 72/73mph, no problems, but the closer you creep to 80, the harder it is to watch out for them. Even though when you maintain a constant speed of around 100mph for 6 straight hours, it saves some time, LOL. I was a passenger in the car and we were traveling with about 15 other cars, luckily no one got pulled over!

I've run 225s on my 6" wheels, but those were 17's. These wheels will be 14/15/16" so I'm not sure if its the same. thanks though.

Can I run a 245 or something? I know at least a 225, but how large can I go? Thanks

Where to buy brake bias controller/proportioning valve local?
Bam replied to Bam's topic in Passing Lane
ok sweet, I didn't think this would be a stocked part, but I guess I was wrong, thanks guys! -
I'm in need of a manual brake proportioning valve, either the knob or lever, doesn't really matter to me. Who would sell one locally? thanks

I've got 2 complete bug setups for sale. two complete front subframes with everything including brakes, suspension, wheels/tires, and two complete rear ends w/ torsion beam, trans, axles, engine, shifter box/cables, suspension, brakes, wheels/tires. I've also got about 5 extra wheels/tires if your interested as well. I've also gots tons of extra misc parts that I got with this thing, some in good shape, some not, I'll sell it for a good price.

The engine runs fine, even though its not driveable, why not try it out?

Desparado, thanks for the input. This isn't a go-cart, I understand, its a rail buggy but it should only weigh around 800lbs when finished with a bike setup. About 1000-1100lbs with a 4cylinder. I've researched/physically weighed my setup, just the frame weighs 203lbs, I've cut off both the front and rear suspension, so this is just the frame. I've got the new front suspension to go on tomorrow, which I'll weigh it then, but from carrying it around I'd figure both sides, complete setup including brakes no more than 100lbs. I'm guessing a bike motor/trans should weigh between 150-200lbs, right? So that puts me up to aroudn 500lbs, give or take 20lbs. The wheels I've got and judging from the weight of the tires I want should add another 150lbs, maybe less. So we're at 650lbs, only missing two seats, which I have and they weigh 12lbs a piece, so let's say 700lbs because I want to mount sliders to them, and then the rear suspension, which will be one big swingarm most likely. We'd be doing a solid rear axle with just a sprocket on it for the chain I think. **The only thing I'm not sure on how to setup up would be the rear braking system? This is what I picture: Solid rear axle, basically just a pipe, weld the hub/something with the bolt pattern I want onto each end, then put a rotor on. I'm thinking I'll need to make custom carriers for the calipers, or mounts, something. Does this sound like anything feasible? Another question would be since the brakes I'm using from the donor car are front brakes, and the rears are drums on the donor, how would I setup the ebrake to do the rears? ***I bought a 600 today, got it off a buddy for $300, its got a bent frame but the engine runs fine and its got everything I need I think. I'm going to mount this bitch on there and then if its not fast enough, hopefully all I'd need to change might be a few mounts when I step up to a 1000cc or larger. Pics to come later this week of progress.

A buddy of mine has a 1989 Katana 600 w/ a bent frame, but it runs fine, just the rear wheel rubs so its not driveable. I don't care about that since I want the drivetrain. Bad thing is, specs for that year say it only has 86hp/60tq. So I want to know if I can put nitrous on it, how it handles it or whatnot? What can I do for more power? Is there anyway to double the power reasonably? I'm only asking because he's almost willing to donate the bike for my project, its just not very powerful. thanks guys!

Desparado, what do you mean flipping a motor? I am putting a fwd setup just in the back of the car. the engine will be facing the same way as will the trans, Its just behind the driver instead of ahead. I did look at keeping the bug setup, but it wasn't work it. A performance rebuild kit to take it from 1600cc to 1915cc runs a little over $1200 in parts and only nets you 130hp/135tq, plus labor. Not to mention the whackass bolt pattern, finding good looking wheels, and the car has 4wheel drum on it now, the disc conversion is $300+ for each axle so over $600 in parts. That's over $2000 in parts I'd need to only get what I can get out of a stock modern 4cylinder engine for around $100. I pulled a complete front suspension yesterday for the rail buggy, I'll need to make mounts but it should work great, not to mention the car I pulled it off of had coilovers and performance shocks I got as well. Total cost for the entire front end including, shocks/coilovers, a-arms (upper and lower) tie rods ends, brake rotor/pad, and calipers was $8x.xx, not bad in my eyes. I also pulled the entire front subframe off another car, and including the axles, all parts mention above, and some steering components, it was around $100. The second suspension is for the rear end if I do in fast stick a 4cylinder in there. But right now, I'm holding out for a bike setup, and have had some people email me so hopefully it happens.

Already on craigslist, thanks for the link, I'll call them in the morning!

I'll pass...

No, just pay the ticket.

Looking to spend around $1000 or less, must be 750cc or bigger, need the engine, trans, computer and harness. Thanks

I don't know you, but since sunday's usually my only night off, I'm up for it if your cool, I'm sure senior members could vouch for me, even if I haven't really been out this year.

I'm alright with fabrications, but one of my buddies is great with it and can do just about everything, then another of my friends can rebuild motors/whatever with his eyes closed, like overnight. So we've got a pretty good crew to do this, we're also not starting from scratch, I bought a frame chassis that already has a titled/is registered, and we're just renewing it basically. It had all 60's vw bug stuff on it, steering, brakes, suspension, engine/trans, but that's not what I want to do. Here are some pictures of it as its sitting in my garage now. Also, we didn't make it to the junkyard today because we're still contemplating what to do. I realized that since this will be a car for next season anyways, there's no point to hustle and get this done, I don't need it running/driving next month. So I'm going to put up a bunch of WTB ads for a bike motor, and wait and see, if I don't find anything I like by say March 07, then I'll drop a simple 4cylinder in it on the cheap. This car with a bike motor should weigh around 800lbs, and with a 4cylinder hopefully around 1000lbs. This should be a low 12 second car NA, if not faster. Here is a picture of when I got it, and what it looks like now. Check http://www.putfile.com/bam6i4 - Yes, that's my fatass in the pics, but I am holding the up with one hand, not that heavy, and the front suspension will be coming off tomorrow in favor of a newer 4cylinder one. I've already read up on the BMV's list of what it takes to make it street legal, so I'm good there. This will be a cruiser car, of course will see street action as well as strip, (if possible) As of right now I'm $400 in, and I have a goal of to do this with $2500 or less. It will happen. We are completely dissasembling the car right now to get ready for sand/mediablasting and powdercoating. We're also welding in a few more braces, redoing a few, and cleaning up a lot of the pre-existing welds. The frame as well as the suspension parts will be done in black.

I'm looking for a wrecked bike, prefer a 1000cc or larger. Anyone know of any local classifieds for bikes or forums I can post? I don't care about the condition of the bike, as long as the engine/trans is good. All I need is the engine/trans/wiring/pcm. Thanks guys
-
Oh yeah, nitrous is a definite, boost is always a possibility.

Well I made several calls today on bike engines/trans and it just isn't in the cards. The best deal I found was for an 01 R1, everthing I needed and only 3k miles on it, was $1800 +tax, definitely way more than I want to spend. So we're doing a zetec we decided. A friend of mine has expeirence with the motor, they are extremely plentiful and cheap and not that heavy, the engine is roughly 240lbs and the trans is another 70lbs, so under 315lbs, plus we're removing some accessories which obviously aren't needed in a go kart. We'll be a u pull it tomorrow taking advantage of their sale, complete engines for $65, trannies for $40, we'll probably pull a few just in case. Along with the entire from subframe from at least two cars, one for the front end, and another to use with the engine in the rear. The goal is to have this finished for $2000, we've already got the frame built, steering in, gas tank and seats mounted as well as all the lights. Total invested as of now is a tad over $400 and plenty of time. I'll start a new thread in a week or so once we get the frame powdercoated and its actually looking like something.
