  1. Id buy the domain name if the owners want to sell

There is the touch labor aspect, licensing, etc. Who knows what this thing runs on probably phpbb on a windows xp laptop in Chris' closet. It could be unfucked easily.

Step up and do it if it’s that easy…..

  2. +1. I'll keep logging in here until it dies.

I will say, if someone has the techy time to keep it going on a new platform, I'm happy to carry the cost of hosting for a couple years...

I would have gladly stepped up, it's the time aspect that kills it for me primarily. (Likely present admins also!)

The largest issue is the time to keep everything security patched and up to date against all the security threats out there on the web. Plus the issues when something goes down and you get a million texts and such asking what happened. :gabe: (Sorry Anthony!!)

  3. Curious as to why people think CR didn't continue to thrive over the years? Is it just a life cycle of a forum?

Obviously our generations aged and life happens but why did the next generation not step in to fill those shoes? Was it really due to social media? I don't see Facebook replacing all that CR had to offer at one point. Are the younger generations not into cars the same way?

Never really thought of it all until now.

When Facebook started to take off, there was a distinct decline in forum traffic. Some better rooted forums held on, but ultimately I think social media was the driving force in forum decline. That “free” platform allows people to create groups whereas forums require hosting and management which costs time and money.

  4. Fuck.

    Fuck Facebook.

Money. Hosting and backups cost ~$75/mo.

Also, security. We're on an old ass (and vulnerable) version of Apache and PHP and Ubuntu operating system that's 12 years old.

And time. I don't want to put the time to building up a more secure place to host such old shit, nor do I want to put the time in to fixing all of the stuff that breaks when performing an upgrade so it can run on newer shit, for a site that gets dozens of users a month.

I'm open to discussing handing things off to someone, if someone wants to put the money and time into bringing things up to current spec.

I get ya man. It was hard to walk away from Dayton Fbody and was sad to see COFBA dissolve, but social media has killed the forum. Unfortunately I am not a Facebook user so this will likely be the last hurrah.

It’s been a great run folks!

  5. Any recommendations for a decent cable? I’m sure anything labeled as “oculus” has the appropriate tax on it. We tried one we have here and it’s not even making a connection so it’s probably a cheap China cord not worth a shit. I have an anker but it’s only 6’, I’m guessing 10 or even 15 would be better but given all the cheap cords I don’t want to waste money on a million just to find one that might work.
  6. Lol, good luck. If you need some game recommendations just say so.

Did you use my referral link? Another friend of mine used it on Christmas and got $60 in Oculus Store credit.

Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk

Yeah I think she used it, not sure how it works because she’s handling it.

Edit, she said yes he got $60 credit also. Thanks!

  7. I’m fully expecting this to be a failboat/paperweight but when you get $300 for Christmas and saving from your birthday, what better thing to do than piss that money away right? He’ll never save enough to upgrade his PC and I’ll be expected to but that ain’t happening. This is going to be a hard lesson in what happens to your “hard earned” money I’m guessing.
  8. If he's a lil fatty he'll play for a week then it'll collect dust on a shelf. It's a hell of a workout dodging bullets and shooting around corners.

I expect this TBH. He’s not active, but I think he WANTS to play games from PC on it. He likes some car mechanic simulator and I’m guessing that’s what’s spurring it, I just expect his PC to be too shitty to handle it and I’m not buying him a $3k video card FFS. If it’s him in a VR world tinkering, building a PC or something I can see him totally digging that, but physically being active? Fucking LOL.

I’m trying to educate myself as much as I can so I can explain why he’s gonna hate it instead of my wife just thinking he should go for it. I know he has the attention span of a squirrel, endurance of a dead battery and the thrive to keep trying like roadkill but my wife doesn’t get it.

  9. Ok, my son (he’s 12) actually managed to save up $300 for a dam VR headset and he has his eye on the oculus 2. I know nothing about this crap, but I’m trying to be supportive. I just don’t want this to be a total train wreck, but he’s adamant about getting one. What are the gotchas here? He has a PC but it’s older, GTX970 maybe vid card, 500gb ssd and 8 or 16gb ram so it’s ok but no new machine. Does he need that to play? What about games? Are there titles he can play out of the box or will he need hundreds more for content?
