i got carpet in a 24x12' bedroom, a 14x14 bedroom, and a ~36"x10' hall and 1/2 flight of steps for ~700 installed. i would say its probably 450sq/ft let me know if you need a number for my carpet guy

thanks kirk. kinda what i was thinking i'd hear. it was hurting a little last night, but i took 800mg of iburprofen again, iced it for an hour or so, and went to bed. took some more ibuprofen this morning, and went out for a 58 mile bike ride. oddly, the ride didnt bother it at all. hopefully it'll feel better in a few days...

if its load bearing, you should be able to put a couple 2x10s or 2x12s together with a piece of plywood down the center (will give you proper 3.5" framing width) for a header, then make some jacks and king studs and frame up the rest. thats what we did with my kitchen and the 12' opening
