  1. Good for you man, sounds like a great path to a fun street machine. Make sure to document as you go, other peoples headaches are always fun to watch ;)

Yea I'll do a build thread. Why not. First thing I noticed last night, whoever did the BBK H pipe welded the stock manifold bolts to the flange. That'll be fun to pop.

  2. Advice from the guy who can't take his own advice and is now building um... 3 cars.. at the same time :(

Make a plan, get it set, and build it to plan. As soon as you start changing this and that mid build time tables and costs go out the damn window. Ask me how I know :)

Just picked up the last of the parts for it. Went with Fel Pro 1133 MLS gaskets, and because I can't leave well enough alone I bought a new distributor as well. Might as well since I'm in there.

    The configuration now CLOSED. haha

  3. It will come apart much quicker with that cam, simply because you are raising the powerband substantially. The 5.0 isn’t the best balanced engine out there and spinning it up high makes it come apart much quicker. Keep it about or under 5500 rpm or so it will live for a decent time.

Cool. I hear you -- I'm not much of a hooner anymore. :)

Car is out of the cover and up on jack stands. Time to get busy.

  4. Curious... if you are going N/A have you thought.. As Joe mentioned earlier about putting a small shot on it? You can pick up some simple weekend install kits on the cheap and now that the heads/breathing is handled should give a nice pick up if you occasionally "need" it

I honestly don't need that style of additional horsepower. If I was out highway rolling a lot, or at the track, would def be a good option. I'm just putting around town mostly, and with the fucking hills here "always on" performance is what I'm looking for. This is more for my ego benefit, and a reason to wrench. :D

  5. My philosophy has always been to treat head gaskets like a fuse. You want it to blow before other, more expensive things. Assuming the tune is dialed in, it should not pop.

Good insight. Thank you. Car will def be tuned -- and considering the investment I think I'd rather have the gaskets blow vs. melting a head...

  6. Bit the bullet on all that shit. :) Went with the aluminum SVE heads, 1.7 rockers, stock cam but new lifters and pushrods, Explorer GT40 upper and lower, BBK ceramic shorties (since it already has a BBK off road H pipe, why bother), 70mm TB, and that 48# injector/maf/pump package, plus a bunch of supporting shit. With the electric fans it should be a pretty good street machine. Gonna use MLS gaskets and studs so I can add a blower later if I want to explode the transmission and/or block.

Thanks for all the advice, guys! Been a long time since I even thought about Windsor work.

Brian Turner, if you're reading this, I'll see you in a couple months.

I've pretty much powdercoated every part I have removed so far, if it could be coated, I painted it.

I'm waiting on the valve spring kit to show up so I can start reassembling everything

Nice. I miss living near you, you could powdercoat all my shit. :) I could do it in the oven but Christine would kill me...

I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on most of this. Picked up the GT40 upper and lower last night, got a great deal. Still looking hard at these SVE aluminum heads, hard to turn down for $800.

  8. Stock 19's

    A nice Fuel Pressure regulator

    255 in-tank pump

See a lot of people put way to big of an injector on a all motor car. Hell, I knew a guy out at the track years ago. Had a 408 with spray and 24# injectors, ran 10's every week.

Interesting. Based on that, I was looking at this kit: https://lmr.com/item/PMA-30PTM9347-K/mustang-high-performance-fuel-system-blow-through-8993

Includes 47# injectors, which should be way way more than plenty enough for me even if I decide to add a small amount of boost later via a turbo or blower.

I guess at this point I've all but decided to go all motor. That's unexpected. Ha

  9. Hell if you're only looking for 75hp, why not just bump up the fuel injectors and add a shot of nitrous. Bang for buck that would be the least hassle. Especially if you're not worried about blowing the block lol. But in all seriousness, are you looking to add power for the 'seat of the pants feel' or are you just looking for more top end power for making highway pulls/spirited driving?

Looking for it to be all around streetable, with good low end torque. I don't do a lot of highway driving in the Mustang, usually scooting around town. Around here 215hp is pretty pathetic given how hilly it is. For example, I drive my F150 2.7 in sport mode almost all the time -- not because I'm a ricer trying to stud out my truck, but because sport mode makes driving the hills here so much more pleasant. I take my son to school in the Mustang when the weather is nice, and there's this big fucking hill to get up to his school and the car is a serious dog on that thing. I basically have to floor it. My minivan does a better job getting up it, ha. My F150 in sport mode just scoots up.

    Before the turbo.

    Stock engine and cam

    Edelbrock Performer heads

    Edelbrock Intake

75mm TB (65 would have been plenty)

    C&L 73 MAF

    Longtubes and exhaust.

Made 300/330 at the tires and ran 12.40's on slics at 109.50 trap. I dont think I even change spark plugs once that entire combo was in the car. Cams sound good, but as you see, not necessary.

Before things started to get crazy with my turbo setup, I ran stock 8548 Fel Pro gaskets. Id blow the motor before the gasket, lol.

That's pretty much exactly where I'd like to be. Around 300/330, if I don't beat on it the stock T5 should be able to handle that. What fuel upgrades was that with?

  10. ...and actually, the more I think about the cam, as much as I love the idea of the F303, the hills around here are brutal. I'm not keen on lowering the quality of off-idle drivability for a pure street car. Seems like folks make block-splitting power on the stock cam anyway. Maybe when I blow the block up...
  11. In all honesty, Id just get a Vortech, Kenne Bell or Novi. And this is coming from the turbo Mustang guy. Would be just so much easier to install, make the same power, and be more reliable. I am working on a On3 89 Mustang now, and the owner farmed out the car to another shop to have the turbo kit reworked because it just flat didn't fit.

That pro turbo kit link that was posted is a good deal. That company was what i used when I first turbod my 93. Just fit well, very little modifications. If bound and determined to get a turbo, id get that.

Good insight. I'm not really bound to the idea of a turbo per-say -- the original idea was to bolt on an extra 75-100HP without much fuss. The car already has a nice exhaust, but factory manifolds (no idea why...) so any further changes would require getting rid of those manifolds. So, when I thought about it, I was thinking a turbo kit would be a good way to kill both of those needs in the same operation and keep things otherwise stock.

But after considering that I'll need to go all the way down to the head gaskets to hold much boost, and I'll have the A/C condenser/radiator/fan removed to install the 134a conversion kit, I'm thinking for now I might just go with a heads/cam/intake and fuel upgrades and accomplish essentially the same goal. For about the same price, I can get a GT40 Explorer intake, SVE knock-off aluminum heads, an F303 cam and roller rockers, and toss on a cheap set of shorty headers (or say screw it and get a good set of long tubes) to add 75 or so HP without much risk to the block.

Or, stick with the original plan, and just do a set of MLS head gaskets and maybe add the GT40 Explorer intake and keep everything else stock, and add the turbo kit at 6-8lbs.

Either option should yield about that 75hp increase I'm looking for, for now. Maybe after a roll bar and brakes I'd be convinced to go north of 400HP but that's not all happening at the same time. :D

  12. I think I've decided to go with an Explorer GT40 upper and lower, GT40 or GT40P heads, and keep the stock cam. With the supporting gaskets/studs, valvetrain, and fuel upgrades, should be good for 400HP on ~6-8lbs. Will try not to blow up my T5 or stock block. Will come see Brian for a tune.

Not in a hurry though. Gonna keep an eye out for good deals.
