  3. Check tread depth. Normal depth for a street tire is about 11/32 of an inch. As long as the tread on the new tire isn't more than about 4/32 of an inch greater, you should be fine. If it is, you should probably buy two tires. The reasoning behind this is that the tread depth can make a difference in how the vehicle drives. A big discrepancy can cause a pull even if the alignment is dead on. Also, according to a magazine article I read (I think it was Motortrend) Michelin engineers recommend putting the newest tires on the back of the vehicle regardless of which wheels are the drive wheels. This has something to do with the handling dynamics of a vehicle. So if you end up buying 2, put them on the rear.
  4. This is correct. In addition, your rim width is in inches. Your example would be 8.5 inches from the inside lip of the rim to the outside lip of the rim. The outside diameter is the overall height of the tire, as it is mounted on the rim in inches. Your example would be 26.1 inches tall. If you find out how tall your factory wheel and tire height is, you can "plus size" your wheel/tire combo by increasing your wheel size and decreasing your tire size a comparable amount. By doing that, your speedometer should stay pretty accurate. Some programmers can adjust your speedometer calibration based on the outside diameter of your replacement combo though, so if you can't get the OD exactly right, it is possible to compensate for it.
  5. That sucks, man. From what I've gathered, Chrysler products have gained a reputation for having automatic trannies go out anywhere from 60-90k miles. I worked at a Jeep dealership in VA a few years ago, and about once a month we had an automatic Wrangler or Cherokee come back in need of tranny work within a few months of new purchase. That's not to say that all Chrysler transmissions go bad that soon, it just seems that the transmission has been the weakest link in many of their cars for some time.
  6. This is perfect for me! Now if I can just get the Caddy sold, I'll call you to take a look.

  12. Maybe my perspective is skewed a little bit from being on the body side of the industry. I'll be the first to admit that when we have a "special" vehicle in the shop that requires specific expertise (ie: adding trans fluid to a newer VW automatic or diagnosing electrical gremlins), it will go to the respective dealer or service provider. I never said that I could go out and diagnose anyone's service concerns, any more than a lot of you could write a collision damage estimate. It wasn't my intention to ruffle any feathers on the board, but it has been my experience that the term "factory trained" has fallen into far too liberal use. Again, maybe my perspective is skewed as I've not spent a whole lot of time in auto servicing. I am speaking from my experience in the auto industry from the collision repair point of view.

Call 436-3700. Ask to speak with Roger from Thrifty. Tell him that Ron told gave you the referral. I'll tell him that someone will be calling and to be expecting someone to drop my name. Hopefully he'll be able to hook you up. You'll have to pick the car up here though. We're on 23N. next to Nissan. **edit** Call me. I'll make sure that he gets the call.
  16. graemlins/pics.gif been looking for something like this...
  17. Toby Keith & Willy Nelson Whiskey for my men, Beer for my horses ... Grandpappy told my Pappy back in my day son, a man had to answer for the wicked thing he done. Take all the rope in Texas, find a tall oak tree, round up all o' them bad boys, hang 'em high in the street.
  18. You've got to remember, when you go to a Mercedes dealer, you're spending a lot of money to have the privelege (sp?) of having that star on the invoice. Most of the mechanics that you'll find at a high end dealer are only one altercation with management from working at the area Chevy or Ford dealer doing the same thing. For the most part, there is no such thing as "Factory Trained Service Professionals". The dealer will send their techs through a specific training course on some of the more specialized equipment they use, but that is it. You're paying for the name. Hell, some of those technicians might have just come from the local Chevy or Ford dealer... Does working for the dealer make that technician more qualified to work on your high end automobile than the shade tree mechanic next door? I don't think so! I'd only take my car back to the dealer for warranty concerns. Otherwise, there are a lot of people that will do the same work for far less money.

  20. I work for Auto Body North on 23 Across from Saturn, and next door to Nissan. Phone is 436-3700.
  21. Are you filing a claim with your insurance company? I can get you an estimate if you want it. I'll be working tomorrow till 2:00 if you want to bring it up.
  22. I was going to say, if he just wants to get some paint on the car, take all of the trim off, and run it over to Maaco. The gloss will only last for about 2-3 years with regular maintenance, but at least it'll all be the same color. Our all overs start at about 3k-3500.
  23. What kind of paint work are you trying to have done? Just an all over, custom, collision? What kind of time frame? How much do you want to spend? Are you concerned with longevity of the paint? You have to consider all of these things. Will you be doing any of the prep work yourself?
