  1. I got out for about 50 feet, but my tires were slipping all over the place. Kept locking up, and spinning just letting the clutch out. Too slick for my setup!
  2. The rear looks unweighted, or the ride height is oddly high back there. I'd drive that. Looks pretty clean.
  3. yep, that's with well water. The last system at my other house also used about 2-3 bags a week. My current system is dual tank. Any less than 2 bags/week and you can feel it getting hard (that's what she said).
  4. I have a kinetico and it works pretty good. You should have a big-ass filter installed in-line, and a hard-water bleeder valve (I forget the specific name for it) is nice as well so you can adjust the hardness instantly any time. The kinetico (or at least mine) doesn't have a scheduled cycle, it just recharges as needed. With two people it uses about 2-3 40# bags of salt a week which is about the same as our last softener. With the systems you set to recharge at a specific time/day you can put them anywhere, but with the auto systems you want them somewhere out of the way so they don't bother you recharging whenever they feel like it.

  7. Oh yeah, they're finicky all right. Tightening up most firearms costs reliability in general... but 1911s are picky about magazines (you thought ARs were!), ammunition (FMJ, JHP, TMC, etc.) springs, parts fit, etc. They're wonderful when they're working right, but they are notoriously finicky. That being said, my springfield cheapie 1911 has been about 98% in the last 1000 rounds.

  11. 25 years ago Audi was making the 5000 quattro (or 200 in non-America). You ever heard of it? It had an aerodynamic galvanized body, forged & turbocharged motor, oil/water cooled turbo, braided stainless fuel & oil lines, after-run coolant pump, injector cooling fan, thermostatically-controlled oil cooler, 4-wheel disc ABS, manually locking center and rear diffs, underbody skid plates, trip computer, auto-check system (to tell you if bulbs were burnt out, consumables were low, or maintenance needed done), heated seats, and much more. Ford thought it was so good they copied it and made one of their most successful cars of all time- the Taurus. Audi was light-years ahead of the competition 25 years ago. All this when Subarus had carbs and pushrods, WTF is a Lexus?, and Nissans (it rusted dat soon?) were oxidizing on the dealer lots. I think your mustang got fuel injection 25 years ago, didn't it? Too bad Americans don't want to maintain spaceships or you'd still see them around.

  13. I can't even remember how many rocker sills, body-claddings, etc. I've seen get ripped off because of ice wedged in them in the last month. I've seen two cars in the lot at work where the wheel-well build ripped the whole rocker-sill off when the wheel hit it! Everybody makes lemons, and if the QC was 100% on everything it might well be a $60k car. Welcome to mass-production.

  15. I just pointed out that he said he didn't condone something, then you made reference to his statement as though he did. That's how it came off to me anyways. I'd argue that our country is pretty decent because we just haven't had enough time to screw it up yet (but we're trying). We've only been around a few centuries, so give it time. And we've already got one civil war under our belt too! The bigger issue here is a growing trend in dissatisfaction with our elected officials. Right?
  16. see what I did there? Yes, let's all go out and vote for people who will change everything and make it all better. Except then they get in office and can vote however they damn well please with little accountability unless the media jumps their shit. The voting public doesn't have the time nor desire to research and follow every one of their representatives so they know what's going on. I suspect they'll just write it off as a fluke, attributed to "a crazy idiot" rather than a wake-up call.

    You used to be able to build a halfway decent AR for $450. Anymore you're looking at closer to $600ish.
  18. These also get crappy fuel economy if you're worried about that... Mine doesn't get warmed up during my 2 mile commute to work, but driving only when it's cold gets 13mpg. Warmed up on the highway the economy is closer to 20. I've seen these sell recently for $2000 for a barely driveable, beat to hell car that needs a couple grand of work. $4500 seems to get you a pretty solid good-looking driver, and $6k+ should get an enthusiast-owned, excellent condition car with some mods and all maintenance. Make sure all the boost hoses are in good shape, especially the intercooler-to-charge pipe hose under the driver's front corner. Also check the steering rack and PS pump for leaks and sketchiness, and make sure you get strong boost building by 2k rpm. Oil pressure should be 5 bar (75psi ish) above 1500 rpm when warm, and right about 2 bar at a warm idle. Mine seems to run about 100c oil temp on the highway.
  19. That's a good price if it's good wood. For a while I sold a cord of Ash/Hickory for $140 delivered and dumped, and people were thrilled to get it. The majority of our customers thought we were dropping too much, and we had to say "That's a cord, I promise." Our 3/4 ton Chevy has an 8 ft bed, and we have about 1 ft. side extensions on it. A cord is that thing clear full up to the cab. If I recall it's about 3500lbs on the scale but it's been awhile. If it was an actual CORD of good wood for $100, I'd buy all they could supply and resell it at 40% markup. Seriously. Every customer I've delivered to this year said, "Seriously, you guys should raise your prices."

  21. Oh, and another thing. This is a big heavy car with a small, low-compression (9:1) motor hauling it around. Don't expect feisty power anywhere until your turbo gets moving. You B5 guys may be used to having boost right-now just off idle, but with a K24 it ain't happening... At least the turbo will make 20psi forever. Adjust driving style accordingly. Back in 1992 227 hp (280 chipped) was pretty decent. Now, you'll get smoked by Odysseys and such all day. Get used to it. They're not quite as good as the old 5000/200s off-road, but with a locking rear diff and a torsen center they're still pretty good.
  22. Look, it's me! If you want super sexy carbon fiber trim inside, then you'll need a 93'. They made tons of 93s though, so finding carbon trim off a wrecked one isn't impossible... The 92s are generally the best as they had the euro suspension (lower, stiffer) and trip computers. The S6s (95) got a few facelifts- fenders, hood, interior, EDL, lights and look slightly less-old. Yes the motors are very reliable and will make good power for a very long time. These cars are very comfy to drive, and hold up pretty well. They are very reliable as far as turbo Audis go, but being 15-20 year old cars, keep some stuff in mind... Timing belt service- not too hard to do and only about $250 for DIYers now. Do it because replacement heads are tough to find. Also, electrical crap... The coils are getting to the age where they're starting to fail. They're expensive to get OEM coils ($500+), but you can retrofit any number of solutions like 1.8t coils (that will work about 30k miles), LS2 coils (that may cause computer issues), etc. Also a source of major concern- some in the community are having ECU failure due to an ignition driver that is not available to replace. Your only option is finding a less-used computer, or going to an aftermarket solution. Most cars are still fine though. Expect typical VAG stuff like MAF, n75 valve, after-run coolant pump, and such to need replaced if it's original. They are generally much more reliable than the later cars, and mine still has lots of original electronic parts at 186k. You can PM me or ask questions here. I've owned a 93' S4 since 2002, and despite being in 3 accidents, sitting for a couple years, it's still great 100% of the time, 80% of the time.

    cheapest AR

    For range duty and plinking you'll be just fine. DPMS, CMMG, Del-ton etc can be had pretty cheap. What are your expectations of an AR?
  24. I sure hope you guys keep this going for at least another couple pages. I was really enjoying reading both sides of your arguments. I have my own beef and my own land so I can understand both sides. Keep it up guys. Taco bell is one of those things you like when you're eating it, but know it's kinda wrong on some levels....[insert mom joke]

    good 1911

    You'll probably be happier is you just buy a basic Springfield for $500ish and spend a couple hundred bucks on good mags and practice ammo. Keep in mind if you buy a used 1911, they're a little more maintenance intensive than most other pistols.
