You should know as soon as you get the stud out. If the fins look good on the stud, the hub is iffy. If the fins are all smeared, the hub might have stayed intact.

Yep, found both of these last night. In our case, it only gets loud when the level gets low (imagine that). Clay, I am sure - like everything else that breaks - I will try the fix myself. I think I am just going to take the approach of taking "extra" things out my way to make God's plenty of room. I only get frustrated when trying to do car brain surgery through a 1/2" opening.
