There would be specific cars I would work on, and only certain repairs. I wouldn't try to dig into newer computers. I would avoid large jobs like clutches, engine swaps, etc. Tire mounting and balancing, rotations, oil changes, belts/hoses, brakes, easier small jobs. I'd love to get back into some light weight radio installs as well. The tire machine does motorcycle tires also, so I could see some business there.

I've DD'ed an 01, 04, and currently an 06. 01 ext cab 4x4 5.9 04 reg cab 4x4 4.7 06 4 dr 4x4 5.7 Never had a single issue with any of them. At all. Towing? Go with 5.9 or Hemi. MPG? You don't gain ANY MPG with a 4.7. Room? Go with a newer 4-door, not just an ext cab. Post up any specific questions.

Why diagnose anything? Just replace every possible cause. No wonder car companies are struggling with dealerships doing repairs like that. Not that you care; more power to you. Take it back and tell them you have a squeak somewhere; they'll probably replace all your suspension and interior.

I've owned a 4.7, 5.9, and a 5.7 Hemi, all in similar trucks, and there honestly isn't much difference until you haul with them. The 5.9 and Hemi and 3 times the engine the 4.7 is when towing. I was always impressed with the 4.7 when running 4.10's.

I gotta ask... do you know that most cases of beer also come in quantities of 24?

Love it. These are the kind of car owners I loved dealing with at the shop. We had a lady with a 70 Chevelle that came in every Saturday morning for her tire pressure check, $2.something of gas and usually drop off some cookies or fudge. I would always tease her, "now why do you think you need this gallon of gas and tire check EVERY week?" She'd just smile and say, "you never know where us old ladies might go." The car had about 1/4" of paint on it, but it was still cool. EDIT - good luck on her surgery today.

I didn't ask if the modding would prevent DD'ing it; I have driven much more modified cars daily. I should have asked, "are there any repairs needed to make this a reliable daily driver?" OP, PM sent.

Yes, I have made my share on buying and selling cars, and still look for deals all the time. I just really need a hobby and miss the satisfaction of a completed car repair / project.

I mean they charged my insurance for 2 more visits than I had. They charged for massages I never received (because their employee quit, not b/c I failed to show). They charged for a back brace that "never seemed to get delivered". That's what I mean. The place was a joke.

I'll be honest. Night and day different than I thought the replies would be. This is far from being a certainty at this point. The other major factor to the idea is that I would have a kickass employee / co-owner... my dad, who has ran his own shop since his late 20's and could work at this when or if he wants to. Another option was to find a building and split the rent/bills with him. But, to be honest, that's more than I am looking to bite off. And I was thinking like a lot of the replies in this thread: a job or 2 a week and a couple on the weekends. Nothing that would prevent me from being with the family and maintaining my day job.

We're having a party for our son who's turning 3 on St Patty's Day. We've having a hot dog bar (dogs with trimmings, coney sauce, hot shit for adults) along with normal singing, cakes, etc. Cheap and kinda-fun.

I'm near Pataskala / Newark / Granville / Buckeye Lake. Lots of used car. I'd charge more than the cheapest guy; much less than a shop and a ton less than a dealership.

So, sooner rather than later, I am most likely going to have access to 45 years worth of tools (hand tools, brake lathe, tire machine and balancer, specialty tools, you name it) on top of my own sizable tool collection. I have a 30x40 detached building with ceilings high enough for a lift. I spent 10 years of my life turning wrenches for a living and live in a zoning area where I can have a business. Do you think there is the clientele out there for a small, home-based shop that can do small jobs (tire work, external engine work, brakes, shocks, etc) anymore? I am talking 1 or 2 jobs a week, by appointment only. Forget the legalize / insurance / paperwork side of things; I have that covered. I am trying to wrap my head around whether or not there are sill enough people that would appreciate paying less than a big shop, prefer giving their money to a local business, etc. Been day dreaming for a while; thought I would finally ask. This would be entirely as a hobby / extra income. I wouldn't be relying on this money to live on.

Good in theory, except for way more than 4" came down while I was away from the house. Not taking away from that thing, it is neat as shit.
