It should not be that 'sludged' up after 5000. Unless you use Quaker State, drive in REALLY dirty conditions, and have never changed the oil. Did the lifter noise start "all of a sudden", or slowly show up? Have you changed ANYthing on the engine recently or around the time the noise started? The cheapest thing by far to try is to change oil and new filter. Another easy thing to try is to buy/borrow another pressue guage, and check you really have 60lbs at the sending unit.

Called the trans shop dad uses today. This does involve a tear down, and rebuild. For the price I was quoted, I'll be selling the shorttail, using that cash +some, and buying a new longtail TH350. It's really time to step up to one that can hold more hp anyways. I think the trans is the only drivetrain component I have not replaced in 10 years.

"bbboti" on here had a 750 Shadow that I rode a fair amount. With a set of (I think) Cobra pipes, it was fun enough and sounded pretty good. Don't expect a speed demon, though.

The TH350 in the S10 put up a good fight. It made it almost 10 years, but has had it. It is a longtail. I have a shorttail TH350. Of all the things I have done, I have never had to research swapping tailshafts. Seems like I remember dad saying it was possible as a kid. What (if anything) is the trick to swapping tailshafts considering I have the donor shaft from the worn out trans?
