    The stock battery just isn't up to the cold weather. I'm hoping to get the DSM up soon, so I may not need one now, but I'd like to cover my bases.

    Intel graphics SUCK. +1 for taking it back and getting one with a dedicated card. Or if you want to stay cheap + integrated card, get one with an AMD or nVidia integrated solution. EDIT: Also make sure you remove all the crap that come pre-installed on the laptop. You prob have 50 processes running. Uninstall with extreme prejudice.

    Why don't you put some blinds on those windows? Edit: and don't say you can't. My parent's old house had vaulted ceilings like that with the high windows. They had fabric blinds. They looked very nice and offered privacy and blocked some light.
