Ohio's Dragon Tail I couldn't find a post similar to this so I thought I'd post it up. I have ridden a lot of roads in SE Ohio, I'm an OU Alum. But I had never ridden OH Rt 78 between McConnelsville-Glouster until yesterday. I found it via the site above and was surprised I has yet to ride it. It, like many other roads in the area, is not for beginners. I only stopped once for a map break in McConnelsville and road from Pickerington to Glouster...I would not suggest this. "Ohio's Dragon Tail" is about 20 miles long and about halfway through I got pretty tired. I was alone and wanted to make a quick 3 hr ride to make it home before noon. I would suggest stopping in McConnelsville for fuel and a little break before hitting Rt 78, it has great twisties and elevation changes. From the start, there are a few nice sweeping turns, then it tightens up a lot, mostly 35/25/15mph turns with some blind hills and a turn right after. At a few points, you have a great view and are on top of the hills looking into the valley of Appalachia. It was about 11am, and I saw a few cars in the opposite direction...a few crossed the double yellow in tight turns, so watch for cages as normal. You're also in the middle of the appalachia farm country, so wildlife and farm machines may be seen crossing the road as well. Overall, it was a great ride and I debated doing it reverse and backtracking the whole route back to central Ohio, but instead I jumped on 33 and headed back north as I needed to make it a quick ride. From SE Columbus to McConnelsville, Glouster, Nelsonville, and back to SE Columbus, it was just under a 3 hour trip. Recommended for anyone comfortable with leaning the bike over a bit.

I stand corrected, his name is James, not John....no need for an RC51 John club.

No, I have not been to a bike night yet this year, I mainly work nights. Check out my album for more pics of the rear of my bike. It is a DASSAULT undertail that was installed by the previous owner. I like the tail, but would like to upgrade the taillights on it as they're not as bright as I'd...especially the brake lights. I'm always checking my 6 to watch for others following too close or not stopping.

Friday, myself and another RC51 took a chance on the dreary weather and headed SE from Pickerington to McConnelsville, Marietta, Athens, and back. It had rained Thursday night, so we were cautions to watch for washed up gravel onto the roads in corners, but it wasn't as bad as we had expected. Luckily the weather held out for us even though it was overcast and looking pretty threatening to pour a few times throughout the morning. By 2pm it was sunny and getting warm. Here's our route and report of the roads. 256 - Nice and boring 13 - More of the same 37 - Getting a little twisty as we got closer to McConnelsville (we passed on 555 as we had other plans, but it looked tempting as we passed) 60 - From McConnelsville to Marietta was nice and twisty but foggy as it was right along the river 7 - Under construction and detoured, missed our turn to 550, backtracked 1/2 mile and back on track 550 - Crummy patchwork and residual slick mud on some low areas from the previous nights rain until we got into Athens County, then the road turned great!! Awesome elevation changes and twisties until the 550/377 junction, it calmed down from there. We were tired as it was our first real ride of the season on the RC's after 150 miles of fun and took the easy/boring hr ride home via 33. I think our next route will include 78 to the Ohio River. Here are some pics are here from the ride. Enjoy and ride safe!
