I wouldn't be too sure. He has a lot more accomplished and is at a higher level in terms of what Nicky and Hopper did before they went. Ben has grown a great deal and his ability to set-up and adapt is VERY good. I'd look at Laguna as a tough place for him as they all have been there enough times, but Indy? He'll be on a pretty level playing field and may shock some folks... Afterall, look at what Rog did at Laguna on a bike he had minimal seat time on. I think Ben will do even better...

I'm not busting your balls, but what credentials other the your few bikes you've "slapped" jet kits in do you have? How much dyno time have you had? Do you know what to look for and more importantly, do you know how to change things based on the dyno graph? The guys at places like Pro Stock are dyno tuning all the time. They see things over the course of years that help them tune other machines. I came from a shop where I worked for 6 years and we dyno tuned all my racebikes, but also dynod tuned a LOT of HDs, sportbikes for the street and even an AHDRA record setting drag bike. We saw a LOT of things and I learned a lot of things. However, the dyno guys who do it for a living know a lot more than I do and it is amazing to see the results after they see a graph and make suggestions as to what to change...

It isn't about hp gain. With a dyno, you can change the curve of power and torque to the optimum settings that in essence, will help the bike run better. Rich or lean is an issue that you cannot tell from your pants, either. Too rich is not going to net much power and too lean will get you power, but is harmful over a long period of time... We raced with Kawasaki from 1998 to 2001 and had the ZX6Rs with carbs. 1994-1998 with Honda F2s and F3s... Trust me, seat of the pants tuning is not a good idea. Especially with an off the shelf jet kit... The deal is that your ass isn't going to catch the differences a pilot jet makes, a main jet makes or position of the needle. If it is wrong, sure... You'll have a stumble, you'll have a dip that is noticed, but I bet I could pull not only a couple of more hp with a dyno on her bike than you can with seat of the pants, but I could get it to be MUCH smoother across the range. Those little waves in the power line won't be felt. The dyno catches those and those little dips and wiggles are losses in power. Has nothing to do with racing as you are street riding, but if I were to do ANYTHING to my bikes, I would want it to be the best it can be - not half assed... Unless you are a wizard at tuning carbs (A lot of older guys can do this well, but they are usually HD techs or old school carb guys - not many newer/last generation carb guys), you'll miss a lot. Again, the air sensor unit alone is worth it. Too lean is mean until it blows up... If she decides to do this - DO NOT do the seat of the pants...

It's Akrapovic's new logo for 2008. I think they actually had it on the bikes that were sponsored last season...

Dude, the $250 plus the jet kit, plus the exhaust all equals SUBSTANTIAL HP gains. Like at least 5hp to the ground!!! Nah, it'll be good for that bike, but yeah, I'd sell the whole deal and say "SEE YA" and get something else...
-
$150 to tune is still fair - I think that should get you up to 5 pulls. They'd really need to do a baseline and then go from there. So, baseline, tune, run, tune, and a final or two... I'd say they could get 4 pulls. 5 would be great as you are supposed to pull until you don't gain anymore to find the real HP, but each place does it different. They're good guys down there so, thy know what's up. $100 labor for a jet kit install and tune is cheap. Most shops are $80/hr...
-
$150 is including them installing and the labor that is needed to tune the carbs. That sounds really fair and adding $100 for dyno time is legit. What you'll have when you're done is a crisp running machine that will perform better than a seat of the pants deal... I'd say $250 is pretty cheap. Problem with having someone do it and then dropping it off at Pro Stock is that they may not take it in. I doubt it and would suggest if Chris is good enough at it, to have him put it in there, leave all the plastic and stuff off and let them have at it. Probably save $75 or so...
-
Just slap it in and have Pro Stock do it. I forgot they have a dyno...
-
Not really. Why spend money on a jet kit if all you are going to do is slap it in and guess what is optimum? Plus, with jet kits, an exhaust gas/air analyzer is needed...
-
Nice power curve. Too bad it is still a pig... Speed isn't exact, obviously due to error and no real load on the bike...
-
$250 sounds steep. I will check my source and see. Is getting it to teh Indy area tough? Install can be damn near free depending on who you trust. Getting it dyno time is going to cost at least $100

It's a Honda. Never really any issues with ANY of their Japanese built machines... American ATVs? Well, that's a different story!! From the initial tests from legit riders, it sounds like it is going to be a GREAT 1000cc shootout this year. I think the Kaw and Honda will do really well. Of course, what Suzuki has planned for 2009 is anyone's guess, but since they will update, I am sure it will be a short lived win if the Honda or Kaw are considered better for 2008...

No, it was clean, but it did have a shit pile of sand and grime under the spring and such. Outside a bike fire and having a chain come off and cutting the shock cannister off, most of these rear shocks look pretty good. Your shock was a little cleaner than most because the guy seemed to care about cleaning it before he shipped it. Most slap it in a box and call it good. Has tire and track dust all over and probably hasn't been cleaned since they put it on the bike... Yeah, the linkage is easy - do the swingarm bolt, as well. Most never do and from the factory, it has almost zero lube. You know, how you like it. Well, that's what Yota claims...
-
The bike needs it period. Full exhausts are usually needing tuned. You can let it go and get what was described as a flat spot, but a jet kit allows tuning to be much more exact. Read the label on the box for the jet kit. Will say probably Dynojet, K&N (Dynojet) or Factory Tuning. All are good. What you want is to replace the needles as the tapper is different. However, not always better. Make sure that whoever puts it in has access to a dyno. If not, PM me and I can lead you to a guy that can do this from start to finish and is about 2 hours from Cincy. A dyno is needed because the tuning is needed through the whole rev range. Seat of the pants tuning is a myth and outside a few old guys who have done carbs for enough years to know, it is pretty much a difficult situation. You bought an exhaust, have a jet kit, now get it put in the right way. The reason they probably didn't want to do it is for liability sake. A lot of dealers won't because it techically isn't allowed and for off road use only.... A little suggestion - take the tank, plastic and whatever else needing removed off before you take it anywhere. Why? Labor... You don't need to worry about the tank as they will use a motion Pro remote fuel container and hang it to allow fuel to be used. This isn't a garage fixer. You can do it and if you want to go that route, just do as the other guy stated and leave it alone.

I'm anal about keeping things clean. Just makes the shock easier to work with when it isn't covered in grime and shit. Ask me about Flounder's shock. Had enough sand and grime to start a public beach!! Yeah, I am surprised, too. However, I listed the damn thing too early (winter) and really never was too aggressive. Got a good line on a 1000 now and I need this gone. I'm not going to give it away, per say but cash talks here... For anyone worried about salvage - two things. One, almost every racer out there runs salvage titles unless they are getting free or stupid cheap bikes. How to tell if they get free bikes? MSOs only... Second, this bike has been torn down COMPLETELY and built. Motor was done and I grease the chassis every year. Stuff that I guarantee that almost all street guys or track day only guys NEVER do - swingarm bolt, linkages, steering head, etc., etc., etc... It's straight, runs great and if you never saw the title, you'd swear it was pulled off the showroom to become a racer...
-
I forgot they run it counter clockwise now and teh addition they built... I'm old. They way it used to be was clockwise and a lot tighter... Wondered why the lap times were so much faster!!

Ahhhhh.... there's still more than 1 righty, though...

See updated first post. I have detailed pics of anyone needs to see them. Here are a few:

Fox MX gear. Helmets and boots - Men and Women
Moto-Brian replied to Moto-Brian's topic in Other Stuff
Pretty much... -
There's a lot of right handers at Barber. Turn 2 is a LONG right hander, turn 3 up and over the crest, out of the corkscrew, off the back straight, big long righty before pit in... More rights than lefts, actually... If you had highside issues out of one and two, you have set-up issues or plain ol' ham fisting issues...

Well, considering that the HP it had before the tear down and the fact he had enough carbon build-up to coat a house, I thought I'd let him know it looked really good to validate the money he spent. Cock smoker...:flingpoo:

Got to see your motor over at Reuben's house last week. The head looked really good!!!

First, why does someone have to be at the level of Nicky Hayden to make a comment? Does that mean if Rog says someone is slow or "talks down" to another rider, he cannot do that? After all, he's not as fast as his bigger brother.... Or, take an NFL coach. Some of the best coaches in the WORLD aren't Heisman trophy winners, aren't undefeated, aren't the best in the world as far as record, etc. over their entire lifetime. Hell, some never played football in college!!! Does that mean they suck? I use Davi Millsaps mom as an example. She trains and teaches at their school. She's never won a SX/MX championship, never held an AMA card as a professional racer and yet, she's probably one of the best people to have train you to ride MX bikes. If you ever met Momma Carmichael, you'd know that she is a hard driver towards RC. She drills and never is found w/o a stop watch. Think she has no right to make comments towards what RC does? Finally, I KNEW there was an underlying issue here. If you were up front right away, this all could have been avoided. You were offended about the YSR comment. I was talking about two or three guys I know who race YSRs that have told other people they race and actually brag about being "big bike" racers. I know a LOT of YSR guys. In fact, I have raced with the OYL before and have a few really good friends racing the series. I think it is a great little club and certainly a great place to have fun and enjoy racing at CRP. There were certain guys there, though that have a pretty bad rap. If I stated their names, it isn't fair to them, but let's just say you'd understand... I wasn't making a blanket comment about YSR guys. I asked if it was Bill who was a GREAT racer and is still fast even though he "claims" he's finished (Drew will know who I am talking about) and he is the only guy from out of CBus to really say he's a legit racer with creds to back it up. But, guess what? He like many others never say anything... Sorry if you think I was making a blanket comment. It wasn't. It was directed to a few guys that are involved with the YSR league. In fact, there's a guy that runs there that I USED to call a friend from Dayton/Cincy that for whatever reason decided to become a dick and forgot who his friends were... He blames it on a crash years ago that "changed" him, but I call BS and say he's just a dick and is jealous he couldn't get better at racing while the rest of us moved forward... WHEW!!! Long rant. Sorry guys. Rocky - you can look me up at Mid-O and I will be more than happy to lend a hand. I'm not a dick in reality. Well, to some, maybe, but overall, I am really a nice guy and have a passion for this sport. I love sharing it with others and really strive to help others get better.
