  1. I understand your position, but "I did it and I survived" doesn't mean that you didn't defy the odds. It's like learning on a liter sport bike. Lots of people do it, but a higher percentage have accidents than those who start on smaller bikes. It CAN be done, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  2. Interesting. Gavin is quick, but also young, and doesn't get off the bike much. May have to ride it like a wet race to finish upright.
  3. I can't imagine what I would break on the XR though. My hands are the most probable thing to really get hurt. Otherwise I've already broken my shift lever and replaced it with a folding unit. My pegs are bent to hell. The bark busters should save my brake/clutch.
  4. The kart guys always seem to do more wrenching than driving, but that is not encouraging. Compared to mid-Ohio in the rain, is it better, worse, or comparable?
  5. I'm getting more and more jealous every time I look out the window. Probably for the best though. I have a pretty important hearing for work on Monday, so reviewing that case is probably more necessary than riding a track I'll be at in less than a week. Hoping to pick up where I left off last year
  6. Is Monger's first name Eric? I usually see him out on the motard, but I'm sure he has a 600 as well. Don't know if it's a honda.
  7. The BMV is a blanket term people use to describe multiple offices. The title bureau, registrar, license agency, and a few other offices are all "BMV" entities to some degree. Licensing and plates are typically done together. I have to go register my bike, and also get new plates and stickers for my car before May 11... Wish I had done it yesterday. I could have been riding today. The bike is "legal enough" at this point.
  8. I forgot about vintage bikes. I am also keeping an eye out for old CB's and, if I can afford one, an old RD. The latter would satisfy my long-standing fascination with owning a 2-stroke, and also be retro-cool
  9. Perfect. What would you want for them?
  10. That sounds way better than my current plans.

This is why Easter is te worst holiday... I get 0 days off, but my Sunday is consumed by brunch with my parents, and dinner with my wife's side? Why? So we can collect eggs laid by a fictional bunny, who should really be a possum if you want to make an honest attempt at relating the holiday to Jesus...
  12. 4 months after you, and now that I have the GSX-F in the garage, I am pretty sure the next bike added to my garage will be a 200-450cc dual sport or super moto. I would want something that I could put 17" wheels on if I felt like it, but I don't think that would ever happen. Too pricey. So I really just want a fun hooligan bike for short rides around town, and for the wife to ride. She'll likely use it twice and then never again, but that will be how I sell her on the idea of a third bike.
  13. Standard style signals, or the flush-mount kind? I just want basic stalk-mount signals if possible.
  14. That's interesting. Can't believe the cruisers were in lower demand than the dual sports.
  15. As luck would have it, I got a MC parts mag this afternoon with $10 DOT approved signals.
  16. Anyone have big ugly stock turn signals sitting in their garage? I need a pair to get my bike (mostly) road legal. Let me know what you've got. The idea is to stay below the cost of an aftermarket replacement set, but I'll cover shipping
  17. I got moved from beginner to intermediate at a track day and then crashed the next session. What was more embarrassing was the instructor who had bumped me up came by afterward and said "did you bring me flowers?" Me: "what?" Todd: "I saw you way out in the grass - I can only assume you were picking flowers for me." And it was a dumb fucking crash too... I had run wide between 2 and 3 at Nelson, and grabbed a handful of brake when I target-fixated on the tire wall. Totally avoidable with a cooler head.
  18. agreed. And every kid is different. Like someone else said, this kid may have more experience on a bike than some people on this site... Plus not all 6 year olds are the same size, maturity, etc. My buddy's 6-yr-old is afraid to sit on my bike when it's on the side-stand, and not running. His 4 year old daughter is a crazy one though. She would absolutely not be afraid, and would probably jump off the damn thing if we let her... Assuming they were both tall enough, and both had appropriate riding gear, I would only take his son on a ride. He's got the safer mind-set. He understands the dangers and why it's so important for him to hold on, stay still, and follow instructions. His daughter just isn't wired that way. Not all 6 year olds (or even all 10 or 12 year olds) are. it's a parenting call. Easy for me (or anyone else) to arm-chair quarterback what's appropriate (or inappropriate) for this kid to do, but the reality is that we just don't know him, or enough about the situation to decide how risky it is.
  19. I refer to my current state of life as a"phase II party." In/right after college, I partied hard, often, and late. There was legitimately a time when we would leave the house to go down town at 11:30, and plan on getting to bars around midnight. then we'd close it down, and hopefully go home with someone, getting laid, and avoiding cab fair. Wake up, steal a bowl of lucky charms, and start walking back to find your car (hopefully). Now (especially with the baby here) with a full-time job that requires me to wake up between 5 and 6 every day, I still like to get after it a few times a week, but everything shifts up 6-8 hours. You just day-drink on weekends, or kick off the night with happy-hour at 4:30 on weeknights.. I can still be blitzed by 8:00, and but I waste less time determining who I'm trying to sleep with, and spend more time trying to convince her that our baby girl wants a brother... And I can still wake up at 5:15, shower, and feel pretty good.
  20. I got an older CB headlight on eBay with the fork-tube brackets for $45 or so. The CB lights are just typical 6.5" round lights. I can post a picture later. It's not actually on the bike right now, because I'm replacing the clip-ons...
  21. I'm probably hypersensitive about this, but job and family services DO NOT want to be involved with any family. They get involved when they feel it's necessary to protect the children. They are obligated by law to investigate all reports - that does not mean that a case will be opened. And remember, certain parties are mandatory reporters. If this kid goes into school and tells his teacher about riding his dad's Harley on the highway, he or she is obligated to report that as possible child abuse. Their future as a teacher may depend on it. Then JFS calls the parents and asks them what happened. Local law enforcement may decide to charge dad with child endangering as well. But assuming it's an isolated incident, and dad faces legal consequences for endangering the child, I wouldn't foresee job and family services wanting (or needing) to be involved beyond their initial investigation to make sure this isn't a daily occurrence, or that there aren't other dangerous decisions being made in the home.
  22. Having children has virtually zero to do with evaluating whether a child is abused, neglected, or dependent upon the State.
  23. This portion of your argument doesn't support your point. laws designed to protect the stupid from harming others are not anti-Darwin. Laws designed to prevent people from harming themselves are what interfere with natural selection. In the case of the video, one could argue it both ways. Either the law is designed to prevent dad from putting his child in harm's way, thus preserving his stupid genes and interfering with natural selection; or the law gives the kid a chance at evolving and learning from his idiot father's risky behavior, passing superior understanding along to his own children.
  24. I'd even say one step beyond that: "that's only okay when I choose to do it."
