  1. it's just a question of whether the use of the phone makes her criminally responsible for the rider's death.

she might be criminally responsible anyway. She did break the traffic law... I haven't looked at OH's homicide statues, but it could be a question of murder vs. manslaughter.

the real question will be whether or not using a phone makes her "extremely reckless" (could mean murder) and acting with disregard for human life. The court will have to consider local custom as well, so I doubt they'll be so bold as to say "everyone who uses a phone while driving is automatically being criminally reckless."

i'm on a conference call at work, but I'll try to pull up the OH statutes before I leave...

  2. Good.

i agree. he paid his speeding fine, and the infraction has no bearing on his ability to perform his job.

regardless of your job, it's the court system's responsibility to punish you for breaking laws, not your employer's.

to me, this is really not different than if he'd be convicted of tax evasion...

that's not to say there aren't offenses that I think he SHOULD have been fired for. (i.e. a violent crime)

  3. If someone makes racist comments and there is a little bit of truth in them it doesnt mean its ok or right.

there are HUGE differences between racist (or sexist) comments and a STEREOTYPE.

I'm with JRMii on this - if it's funny, the motive is to be humorous, not hateful. You can have fun at someone else's expense without hating them, or believe they're inferior to you.

stereotypes ARE based in truth, and that's what makes them funny. The idea of suggesting that everyone of the same gender or race acts the same way is ridiculous, and thus comical.

the "ist" comments imply that the group in question is inferior.

black guys have big dongs, black people like watermelon, irish guys have little dicks, irish people have red pubes, irish drink too much, asians are short, asians have narrow eyes, jews are rich, jews are cheap, etc. etc. etc.

do any of those stereotypes imply that someone is 'inferior?' No, it's just picking on a generalized trait or habit for the sake of comedy.

Now can you weave stereotypes in with racist remarks? absolutely - but they're not inherently related.

Victory Rider tried to post stereotypical attitudes of women as FACT, and if he was trying to be funny, he failed. I don't know if that makes him a sexist, but i'm offended by the fact that it wasn't at least entertaining.

  4. I also run Qualifiers (although I did 2 seasons on Pilot Powers). I feel the Qualifiers are kind of in between the regular PP's and the 2CT's.

at a mid "I" pace, my next set of tires might be Dunlop 209's, but i have to burn through another Qualifier rear before my front is anywhere near gone.

30/30 is just a starting point for TRACK use. I keep pressures more like 34/36 on the street, and sometimes higher (with sport touring tires)

  5. condolences to Jeff's friends and family. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but between the comments others have posted, and Jeff's forum name, it's clear that he had his priorities well in order.

  6. Would they let you have a trike?

if he rolled a semi, I'm not sure a trike would be stable enough ;)

just messing around man - tough break, but at least you'll be able to get back on two wheels in the future. Some guy on the NESBA board was told he can't ride because he might have a seizure as a result of a previous crash injury. I think he's gone over a year without having one, but they're still saying no bike.

how long until you're supposed to go back to work?

  7. I run 22 in the rear and 30 in the front with My pilot race.. COLD

30 front? I would have thought more like 28-29, but it's probably a preference as far as 'feel' at that point.

Don't confuse the guy by quoting pressures from a race tire though :p 22 lbs in a street tire would be... um, interesting... (although possibly not as bad as running 38 lbs...)

  8. for street/track tires? start at 30/30 (cold) at the track. I generally dip a little below that for cooler mornings, and the tires have a tendency to come up on their own in the heat of the day.

Nothing wrong with Bridgestones, but none of the local trackday orgs are dealers. STT is a Michelin distributor, and NESBA was Pirelli until last year when they added Dunlop. I've just never had Bridgestones mounted because of the vendors I use.

What trackdays are you going to? the tire vendor should be HAPPY to help you with pressure advice for the track and that day's conditions.

Suspension setup is as formal as scheduling and paying in advance with some vendors, and as informal as tossing a control rider a beer at the end of the day with others. I paid $45 to have my old bike set up, and that got me as many adjustments as I needed for the entire day.

setting the sag yourself is great if you do it right. I don't trust myself not to mess it up :-p

  9. No, it wouldn't be gay at all. I used to be self-conscious about it, but I'd rather ride and arrive clean and safe. I have a position that requires a suit some days and at least khakis and a tie the others. I go right to my office, take the gear off, take my washcloth to the bathroom, go back to my office and fix my helmet head with the washcloth and towel. People are used to seeing me, so the novelty is gone. Go for it! We need more professionals out there bringing some credibility to our passion.

well i'm lucky enough that jeans are cool at work most days. our dress-code is obnoxiously loose. I almost feel bad...

but the day will come when I have to wear a suit daily. I'm hoping by then I have an office with a door, and can bring in shirts/ties/pants for a few days at a time, then just change in my office.

  11. i didn't get to. didn't even start the bikes :(

my bike has uneven fork springs right now (well, uneven spacers), so I really need to fix that before riding it. would have been nice to start it though...

My brother's bike is in perfect working condition (in my garage), but his plates are expired, and the sticker is either at my parents' house, or his place in Columbus... I probably would have needed to hook up the battery tender for a few hours, but jumping it would have worked too.

my track bike clearly isn't street legal, nor does it have any body work on it at the moment.

on top of that, I spent all the daylight hours yesterday in the law library working on a motion to suppress my client's confession. I purposely sat out of view of any windows, so I wouldn't be distracted by how nice it was outside.

I did see one guy on an R6 on my way to the library. llucky bastard...

  12. I ride pretty hard and the oem stuff does not cut it,

you sure about that? I have seen people go stupidly fast on Pilot Powers.

after 2 years (at least 20 trackdays) of track riding, I have yet to find a reason to buy anything 'better' than Dunlop Qualifiers.

Maybe you're faster than me, but for street/track mix, I'd go with nothing more expensive than a Pilot Power 2CT. The Power Pure would be the next step up, but until you're running at the front of "I" group, I think it's just spending money to feed your ego.

modern street tires are just as good as race tires from a few years ago... Either you're riding really aggressively on the street, or the tires have more ability than you think. I know the latter was true for me. I was blown away by how much grip my BT45 sport touring tires had. I've only had Pilot Powers 'push' on me twice, and that was a hot-ass day, and that tire was about due for replacement.

If you want to spend money smartly, pay to have your suspension set up at the track. that will help you get the most out of whatever tires you already have, and only costs like $40-$75 (depending on the vendor). Between that and proper pressures, street tires do pretty darn well...

  13. i have the utmost respect for those who serve our country, and there are certainly things that military personnel have a right to legitimately gripe about, but come on...

What did some of these people expect when they enlisted? I know there are some a-hole recruiters out there who will promise you the world, but if you've got half a brain, you research a 'job' before you accept it.

I have the same beef with teachers who bitch about not being paid highly enough. Ok, you're right - you don't make as much as you should; but don't pretend this was some earth-shattering discovery that blind-sided you 10 years into your teaching career. The fact is that it's common knowledge that teachers get paid dick.

if you hate the compensation so much, find another job.

  14. ^ agree. My wife has never been 'afraid' of my bike... Maybe afraid of screwing up and upsetting me by dropping it, but that's just her giving a shit about how i feel. I appreciate that kind of 'fear.'

with a little more seat time, she'll be good to go.

  15. at least you realize that you're better off letting someone else teach her.

I'd push her to wait for the MSF course.

After 'teaching' my wife to ride, she dropped my bike in my garage (this was a couple years before we were married). Somehow the only damage was a broken clutch lever. To this day, I don't know how she managed to drop the bike so perfectly...

As her wedding present to me, she surprised me by signing up for the MSF course. Llike I said, this was over two YEARS later.

Initially, she did NOT do well. I got a call during their first break of the day saying she wanted to come home because she wasn't catching on. But rather than being the bad guy who was doing a piss-poor job of teachign her, I was suddenly the good guy reassuring her that she could do it, and if she didn't want to, she could come home any time she felt like it.

She came home that day with paperwork for her endorsement. Let the MSF instructor be the bad guy... no one on this site should be saddled with that task.

  16. WARNING: AMA (mini) SPOILER BELOW. I DON'T KNOW IF THE RACE WILL BE TELEVISED OR NOT, BUT IT HASN'T AIRED YET. i watched live timing friday afternoon online.

WTF, why wait to see it? They've raced it in WSBK and havent done shit.

I believe someone rode a BMW to second-to last (20th place maybe?) in yesterday's AMA American superbike race as well.

Granted, the guy was probably riding against teams with tons more support and testing time.
