WV 3 day trip - Fail!

Well, the stars aligned, got time off and had babysitters lined up so we headed out for a 3 day trip to WV on Thursday. Dropped the trailer off in Marietta and started the ride. Took 47 out and had just turned onto RT 16 (about 55 miles) and my bike died. Couldn't get it started again.  Bike was turning over but nothing coming from the fuel pump. Took it apart as much as we could on the side of the road but couldn't see any obvious problem and the fuel pump wasn't working as far as we could tell so we figured that we had a pump failure.  Push the bike to a house about 1/2 mile away and the people were nice enough to throw it in their garage.  Take the solo cowl off the Monster and I hop on the back of my husband's bike.  Well at some point, he had taken off the right foot peg since we never ride double so I had to hold my foot up for the whole ride back to the truck/trailer.  Finally, get back to pick up my bike and head home.  We left at 11 a.m. and got home at 11:30 that night.  So trying to salvage the time off, we decided that we would take the kids to Niagara Falls.  Well, as we are exiting the turnpike near our house, the power steering fails on the Acadia and we just barely miss crashing into the wall. Thankfully Ed was driving as I'm not sure I would've been able to yank it back especially considering that we were towing.  So that effectively blew the Plan B trip. I guess we weren't meant to travel this weekend.

 

Tore the bike apart at home and yanked the fuel pump out to find the tube to the filter had popped off. Thankfully, simple fix, sadly, still ruined the trip. Oh well. Just seems to the type of riding year we are having. Sigh.....

If you still have it apart, go to O'Reilly's and buy a foot of "Gates Submersible Fuel Line". It's biofuel compatible and won't swell or split over time. It's all I use on the bikes I service. It's $30/foot and it's worth it.

Ha! No, I'm pretty sure the deep swells of Route 47 might have had something to do with the line falling off. Having said that, it took 3 of us to get the tank back on and we have to take it off again as Ed forgot to clip the other lines under the tank.

 

I'll look into those lines. Thanks for the suggestion.

Fuel lines don't come off because of bumps or hills. They come off because they're improperly attached. You should have a word with your technician.

 

That thought occurred to me as well.  Although surprised it took almost 4k miles to happen.

Sorry to hear about the break downs on your weekend ride.Maybe you can push it back later in the fall when the leaves are changing.The fall color make it just a little better anyway.

 

If you want something a little closer to home to tide you over... ODOT just finished paving 147 from Centerville to Bellaire.It might be a little dirty at times due to pipeline projects,but it's still pretty darn fun!9 from south of I70 through Centerville down to Armstrong Mills is being paved now and should be done soon.

Ditto on that, very sorry to hear of your spoiled weekend and tow vehicle problems as well. Maybe you will get lucky and be able to arrange something early to mid September...?

 

I've had the same kind of riding year, hardly any miles whatsoever. 1 GOOD ride and even then 79 had an endless detour & we were almost to our destination @ MidOhio when it would have sent us back east to hit the roads we wanted... & Dave's Ninja started leaking coolant...

 

A few buds are doing a Dolly Sods (West Virginia) weekend October 9th, and I was contemplating going and riding down there. For Davis or nearby towns at medium elevation,  avg temps 63hi/39lo. No faring, no heated grips, high altitude passes may even be colder... still pondering. Buddy may take his DR350 with me & we could trailer it there I suppose, ease the 4 hr slab time chill factor

That stubby fuel line is already swollen. Look at it compared to the clamps. It should not balloon like that. It should be changed.

 

 

The reason it is swollen is that I had to push it down over the barb on the fuel pump. I didn't have a tool to unhook that clamp. after it went over the barb, it was on pretty tight.

I suspect that when they did the 15k maintenance and changed the fuel filter, they put the clamp either on the barb or above it. If it was a 1/4" lower it would be completely under it.

That said, I am thinking of changing it out with a submersible fuel line (never knew that was available or required). Is a normal stainless screw on hose clamp OK in this application?

147 does run through Barnesville but the section that was just paved is 10-15 miles east of there.I was over there today and took 9 down from I70(exit 216).Road crews are still paving that section of 9.The recently paved section of 147 runs from 9 at Centerville to 7 at Bellaire along the Ohio river a few miles south of I470.This is the best part of 147.147 is good all the way from Belmont near 149,but this section has a lot more tight stuff...especially around Key and going down the hill into Bellaire.Just watch out for dirt in a couple places due to pipeline projects.

Are you thinking about heading down there?

Not sure. I was having a hard time finding it on the map so I'll have to take a closer look.

 

We are trying to plan another WV trip but near Beckley this time as we just don't have as much time.  Just an overnighter. At least we can hit up 61 which we love.

I was going to head over to WV tonight for a three day camping/riding trip based out of Pipestem SP,but it looks like I might have to go back to work instead.61 was definitely on my agenda!

A lot of good stuff in the Beckley area.Coal City Road (cr29) is well worth a try.It runs from 16 near Crab Orchard (Exit 42 on I64) to Rhodell which is also near 16.I haven't been over there for a little over a year so I can't vouch for road conditions,but if it is still in good shape I think you would like it.

Mary, there are a lot of good back roads to explore south and west of Beckley, but more towards the Gorge area it is closer to Ohio hills and not quite as exhilarating, with the exception of 60 & 16 from Gauley Bridge to 60/Hawks Nest or Gauley Bridge to 16 into Fayetteville, and 61 Deepwater to Kincaid.

the 1977 - 1987 Suzuki GS Resources forum has had several rallies in that area, and I will try to dig up some maps that don aka DPep had plotted after many years exploring the area. He had them loaded to a website, so if it is still around, I will try to link that for you. Written directions are probably better than his paper map with highlighted marks on it.

Chuck, there was not an actual website. I used the first post in the trip thread as the gateway to the the various links.

There were/are three routes, blue, green, and red. The red route is also called the local route. It is just a shortened version of the blue route for those who don't have a full day but want to get in most of the sights that are on the blue.

The green route I removed because coal companies have closed off and dug up some of the back roads on it as part of their mining operations.

If you can only do one route, I recommend the blue one.

I don't have the map online but here are the directions for the green route. I would probably not go beyond Green 3 to the Glen Daniel Dairy Queen but set course back toward Beckley from there. There are some good roads beyond that point but a lot of populated area and traffic in between them. And Green 7 is the phase where the roads have been stripped for coal. Green 2 has probably the most technical segment on any of the routes. It is Clear Lake Road (County Road 1) up, over and down a mountain.

Well, we won't get the 3 day in but we did do an overnighter to Beckley and back. Kept it kind of simple as we didn't have a ton of time. 

 

From Marietta

 

47 - decent turns but some of the dips in the road are bone jarring and they are almost always mid-turn.  Just keep that in mind. 

16 - I like 16.  Lots of action.  Goes back and forth with great new/newer pavement to crap pavement. When the pavement is new, the road is crazy fun. It's still fun even with the not so great pavement but you need to be aware. 

61 - Near deepwater. Honestly, a ridiculously fun stretch of road. sadly the really good part is only about 4 miles maybe?? but it's so good that it's worth turning around and doing again which we did a couple times. 

 

On the way back we hit, 

 

61 again - see above

Route 2 off of 60 near Montgomery. Pavement quality was poor and what shame.  It was just a really unusual road. Very undulating is the best way to describe. Just back and forth. Long downhill section too. We enjoyed it even though the pavement was junky. Good connector to 16.

Took 16 again to 4 to 36.  36 is just a fun road.  Especially as you get off of 4.  About 2 or 3 miles of banked turns. The first turn off of 4 is tight and banked.  It's worth jogging over to try it out if you are taking 16 anywhere near 4. The rest of the road has some nice turns as well with varying degrees of road quality.

 

About 225 miles each way. Great trip. No problems and great weather. Cell service is almost non-existent for this whole route. Very odd but I guess that's just how it is.

BMW and aprilias use similar intank hoses. I used dorman flexible nylon FI hose for $6 from autozone and crimp on clamps ordered from Carquest.

Mine had submersible non FI hoses on it from PO.

Does the line press against the top of the tank? my filter goes on the other side of the U opposite the pump for lower profile. like these two.
