IT Crash

So, how many of you who got canned/laid off/ejected/dejected ect. in the IT crash still work in IT today? How many of you make as much, or more, than you did before the crash? How many of you are flipping burgers to stay alive?

I, myself, am only 1/4 as much in IT (do not do it day to day) and I'm not making near the money I was before.

I understand this is a personal subject, but I would like to know how the IT market is doing.

Thanks. tongue.gif

The IT department where I work at didn't seem to be affected very much during the crash. They simply stopped hiring new people. Then suddenly, when it looked like the economy was starting to turn around this year, we got hit with 24 layoffs. I'm still here though. smile.gif

Never saw it coming.

Got laid off several times over the past 3 years since I moved up here. Hard to find a job unless you have no experience. I did however find a good job kinda in IT. Its paying more than I ever made in IT. Anyway its copier field service. I do some connected stuff, cable drops, and network troubleshooting, but not as much as I used to. I'm glad too. To much BS working on computers.

I work with Earl, so +1.

And to answer another part of the question... I'm making more now than before the 'crash'.

I guess if you consider tech support IT, I wasn't particularly affected by it... There's always a need for people to fix Grandma's internet so she can get her spam for viagra and Paris Hilton videos. :D

I got laid off couple years ago, and never recovered. NOw I have been out of to long and dont have the right skill set or some such.

So now I turn wrenches, making half what I did before. It really sucks, but thats life.

I was working at worldcom/mci/compuserve had 5 years expericence and loved my job. But I was in a niche and got caught w/ the wrong skills at the wrong time.

Anyways what brought this question on? If you dont mind me asking.

thus we see the flaw of readily available tech training, and radio ads for it. Seems everyone jumped the bandwagon at once, nothe job market is flooded with people wanting to work in the IT feild. They got their learn on thinking they'd be assured a prosperous job, but theres alot of competion out there now, and the slightest market fluxuation results in alot of cutbacks.

But honnestly, what job markets are doing good these days?

I don't know about you guys, but when I went was in High School a long time ago in 99..lol. The teachers said that the IT field is going to be the fastest growing, most paid industry in the states. Then after I graduated, went to tech school for Computer Repair/Electronics, they said the exact same thing. I had such a hard time finding a job that it wasn't funny. So fast-forward to a few years, now I am going to ITT to further my education and low and behold, they said the exact same thing..The IT Field is going to be the best industry to get into..WTF..Do these people honestly not read the paper, watch TV, or surf the net. Anyone can tell that the IT field is going do so bad that it is going to crash.

I was doing telecom installs, cabling, router installs (Cisco, Alcate, Nortel, blah blah blah), and also ADSL routing for IPS companies. Everything I did was in a telco switching environment. However, I got stuck in the same crash, so I guess it's related.

I'm doing HVAC now for half the money during the day, and my security gig at night. I miss the money ( I took home $48K in 2000), but I miss the work more. I actually loved installing all that crap and making it look beautiful, all my wires dressed neatly, no divers, no crosses.

It was a job I really enjoyed, good money, travel, not terribly difficult. I got into it because my Father in law is regional project manager for a Nextel, and he told me the same things Ironray was saying; growing field, years and years of expansion ahead, always a need for people with computer skills. I was damn good at what I did and now I'm starting over in a new field.

I got laid off in 02 and was laid off for 8 months and got another job in IT and making more money. But I moved 8 hours from Ohio to get it and am in a higher cost of living bracket so I'm really only making a little more then I was.

It will never die as long as people beleive it enough to dump $20g+ on an education in the feild. Theres money to be made off deceive the youth of american, didn't you get dat memo?

Laid off from Lucent May of 02. I now make a little over half what I was making then (I was making some pretty good money at Lucent). I'm at the far stretch of the IT term, being a cable service tech. I do work on some networking stuff, PC's, etc....but I wouldn't really consider it IT. Actually, I consider it hell (only a 16 hour day today  )
