Try this. Ping yourfavoriteurl.com this will resolve to an IP, then apply this formula.

 

x.y.z.a <--the IP of yourfavoriteurl.com

a*1

+

z*256

+

y*(256*256)

+

x*(256*256*256)

 

The result is a decimal equivalent to an IP address. IE used to support browsing this way, seems firefox still does.

I am actually in a security class right now, we are using firefox because of the security problems with IE (poor coding that allows for buffer overflow exploits etc...) I would say that MANY of microsoft's products are less secure than Firefox. True Firefox in the early releases had exploits, but 90% of them existed in IE as well. Since Feb. it has become a very stabile, very secure solution.

 

Your security guy probably doesn't like it because he doesn't know it.

I don't know shit about the tech stuff here, but the public internet access on the military bases I went to in Iraq all ran firefox. Some of the lenders I do business with here, their sites don't work with firefox. I believe it's like JoneZ said.
