Fuel pump labor costs.....

The fuel pump on my Camaro needs replaced, and the whole process is a bitch to do. You gotta drop the rear axle and whatnot. I know of the "hacker" way to do it which is much easier, by cutting a hole in the floor of the rear hatch area, but I'd rather have it done right.

I'm going to call a few places tomorrow and see what they charge. Anybody have any recommendations for where I should take it? Anybody know of somewhere really cheap?

hack it, I've done several as well as it's done on mine... you'd never know that it was hacked if I didn't tell you

considering its not even legal to do it that way (think of what would happen if fuel vapor got in the car...not good)

i guess the term hack is the best word too use there.

and im not going to say it :D

why is it not legal? i can think of a few cars that come with a trap door to get the fuel pump out like W-bodys. i can't remember but i think the crown vic's have a door under the rear seat.

240sx's have a little door to get to them through the hatch/trunk area. If it were my car, I'd do it the "hack" way in case anything else happens to the pump again.

Mkiv Supra's do too

there's nothing illegal about it... there is still a completely secured and sealed access area to the tank.

like I said before, unless you want to pay someone alot of money, that's really the best route to go.

purpose made trap door vs big hole cut in the floor, or a flap cut out like i always see.

if i remember right, NO gm has one, but i could be wrong. no w-body i have ever done has had one.or j-body. 91 up mazda built escorts (all) are under the back seat, dodges are in the trunk area, same with honda.

lots of cars have the trap door, but not those. the trap doors are sealed, and bolted down by the OE manufacter(sp). a shop can not just cut the bulkhead over the fuel tank. what happens when the car is in a major accident and then boom , the car catchs fire. now the fire is inside the car instead of just underneath. You can answer the judge asking you ,why you decided it was ok to cut the firewall (thats what it is) out above the fuel tank. its fine too do to your own shit, cause then its your falt.(i really dont care, only thing i ever cut is the exhaust)

and look, its right under the back window. so happens in the trunk area right there when its 90 some degrees out side? i hade one come in once the guy kept complianing of a fuel smell after it sits in the sun all day (windows up).it was almost bad enough too make you pass out. granted the vent hose on top of the tank cracked and was leaking vapor. what if, lets just say hes dumb enough too light that smoke in his mouth, then what?

rearend doesnt have to come out, it makes it nice but you really dont have to. ive done them in 2 hours(book time is like 6), the hard way.(but that car was mint, looked like it just came off the showroom floor)when the lines and exhaust want to fight with you, its a PITA and its going to take longer.

i guess its just easyer 6 feet in the air.

but in the end, if its hacker work then it should be hacker pricing like 2 to 3 hours labor tops.

instead of the 6 plus book time.ie if it needs new exhaust , trailing arms bolts dont come out, fuel lines rusted thru etc. then it will run more time and parts.

safety issue.

next time your in the trunk of a 2002 Impala look under the carpet or any one of that body style. also the same year body style Monte Carlo's and Buicks, Pontiacs, all this time you've been pulling the tanks out and just needed to craw in the trunk with a 10mm socket.

And in the F-body, it's not a structual piece there, just a thin piece of sheet metal. Then bolt down your own seal (I know it's not the magical OEM seal, but it will work).

I knew a guy who had his car for years, needed to swap in a bigger fuel pump. Hadn't decided which way he was going to do it, so he decided to go the cut-way. Pulls off his carpet, and someone had already done it (stock pump must for previous owner must have died). Drove it for years and didn't know, and was sure happy he didn't just pull the tank!

Haha. This brings back memories.

The techs at the dealership I worked at had a Camaro brought it that wouldn't start. This is a Honda dealership so they don't get paid shit to do the work to replace a Camaro fuel pump. So, on went the hacking. Cut a hole and got that bitch out. Put the new one in, and still wouldn't fire up.

The guy who just did all this work of cutting shit, welding it back, and painting it, is pissed.

My other car washing buddy and myself are over there getting a kick out of situation and in a "lets see how pissed off we can get him" manner, ask if he checked the fuses.

Another tech was supposed to have checked them, so it got overlooked.

You can guess the rest.

ON TOPIC - From what I saw it isn't that hard just to cut a door in the damn thing. Whoever owns the car next will thank you for it anyways.

well i know when i cut the panel on mine, i rtv'd a plate of metal over the hole and then riveted it down to make sure it would stay there. as long as you do the "trap door" right there should never be a problem with it.

Now if you cut the hole and leave it wide open then ya it is a hack way to do it.

illegal? i dont think so.

a shop cutting someones car up to get a job done...probably not recommended.

someone cutting there own car up...who cares?

i have cut the hole on many cars. i even bought a car that had the hole already there. i understand where you come from not wanting to "hack" hack your car all up. send me a pm and i can get you hook up on this. there easy to do. you dont have to drop the axle. oh hear a good question??? how much gas is in the tank?
