smokin5s
my fiance's Malibu every so often, decides that it wants to show that the gas is empty.... has anyone ever seen this or know how to fix it? She's concerned now that her gauge doesn't show correct and will run out of gas somewhere. Thanks!
Clifford Automotive
Typical on Malibu's sending unit is bad. it is a module assembly that includes the fuel pump and strainer. It requires the tank to be dropped in order to change.
Bam
easy way to fix this is just watch your mileage. my gf's old car, a 99 escort had the same problem, but since she is a smart girl and we like to save money, we just opted for her to fill up at 300miles everytime. So she just reset her trip every 300ish miles and never ran out of gas, this was almost 2 years before we sold the car. Sure it might've been a cheap fix, but if you know your car and aren't retarded, this will work for anyone. Now the 300miles we came up with just because we knew the car usually went 330-350miles on a tank, so your case might be different.... smokin5s
Do you know if you can buy the sending unit seperate or do you have to buy the entire fuel pump? it just amazes me that GM doesn't make trap doors to ge to the fuel pump.... How hard is it to drop the tank in these cars? I haven't been under the back yet to look at it.

smokin5s
the gauge cluster? should I just replace both? Does anyone know where I can get a new cluster for it?
Guest Removed
we always send them out and have them repaired. the pcm & bcm look for the signal from the cluster.the fuel pump isnt that cheap(for a good one, im sure you dont want too have to do it twice) and normal cluster repairs is around $200 &up. depending what all is burnt in it.im thinking theres a tsb on it.
