Bam
why does my computer act up if its been on for awhile? Like It doesn't let me right-click any longer, and it won't let me click on link in a thread, or on a website, and it sometimes doesn't load the page. This will happen like every other day, and only way to fix it is to restart my computer. I hate it, why is this happening and what can I do to fix it? Tractor
It almost sounds like you have a program running in the background that is screwing things up. It could be spyware or a virus and you should be running a program to detect things like that a couple times a month just to keep your system running in good order. If its not that then its gonna be harder to track down. Evan

Akula
Turn the computer on and without opening any programs look at the task manager section marked processes. What is using RAM and how much is being used? Then run your computer like normal and when it does it again take a look in task manager and see what is eating the resources. Rally Pat
I suppose it could be getting hot also, but a virus or spyware program seems more likely.
Tractor
Yeah heat could be the problem, but I"m sticking with a program (ie spyware) conflicting with things and screwing it up. So much of that crap going around these days it makes me glad I don't fix computers anymore unless its family, my own hobby, or whatever. I'll try that here shortly. But I know that on average on have 60-70 processes whenever i look at the task manager, but not sure how much ram is being used, where do i see that? And I guess it could be getting hot, it sits on the carpet, next to my desk, what should I do to help it?
Guest Wunna Dig Race
I run my spy ware and anti virus every day and dont come up with anything
RedRocket1647545505
My new Acer laptop (Vista Basic) does the same exact god damn thing. Fucking drives me nuts. Can't right click. Click a link and the menu bar just flashes at you. Open a new tab and all it says is 'Connecting...'. Shut down, restart, works fine again for about another day. I'm pretty confident that it's not spyware or a virus of some sort. My only other explanation is that this cheapy laptop only comes with 512k of ram. That seems to slow it down drastically. I need to stuff a bunch more in this thing.
Guest Wunna Dig Race
mine has done this since the day it was delivered too me Im ready to go back to xp for a while lol
jfiveeight
i have a dual boot system with vista ultimate and XP pro sp2 and when using vista i have not experienced this problem, i would do as everyone else is saying, check the task manager also, since the computer is from dell, go start>all programs>accessories>run and type msconfig in the startup tab you will see all the programs that start up with your computer, disable what you don't need and leave the few Microsoft ones post back with anyones you have a question about and then restart. edit: 1st post

Bam
well depending on how comp saavy your feeling Fry's is having a really good deal on 2gb of ram http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5284707 Thanks, I found out I have 1g, but I'm definitely not savvy enough to put that in my comp, would that mean I would have 3gb if I put that in or would it replace the current 1gb i have? Farley
Do you have windows VSITA? my VISTA has done this everysince the day my computer arrived in the box from dell u should not be allowed to operate a computer... to MAJOR violations right there.. one... buying anything with Dell on the label.. Two ... vista?
jfiveeight
if you have a motherboard with only 2x DIMMs yes, but those are really rare now a days. i would look at this eHow i linked and before buying the RAM check inside your computer to see if you have enough spots left... http://www.ehow.com/how_895_install-ram.html also, the RAM that is linked is a SO-DIMM... that's laptop memory (and now i see becuase another poster has stated he has the same problem with their laptop but the OP i don't think has a laptop), if you were to buy online, buy with http://www.newegg.com or http://www.zipzoomfly.com 2GB or 1GB depending on your setup those should work. Bam
Its a desktop. I'm all for upgrading it if it'll help, but I just bought the thing in march so I think its decent, no clue though honestly, I just know how to type a paper and get on car forums, lol. On the computer it says Compaq Presario SR2170NX, is that what you needed? Thanks for any help
street pilot
Dells and other machines have borderline spyware installed out of the box. They come with so much junk you dont need. I would recommend doing a clean install with the vista disc - not a restoration CD with all the programs it came installed with. 1GB RAM is plenty to run vista home basic, that should not be the problem. Yeah, I don't know how to do that. Although I agree with you on the fact that this and my old computer have a bunch of bullshit that I have and will never use. It sucks. jfiveeight
then fix it! i have vista ultimate (and an XP) disc you can use if you want, i would look into upgrading your processor more than your RAM since it's not a dual core... it should be an easy swap, if you could open the case and find out what make/model motherboard you have (and then determine if it's a 775 socket) then you can get an e4300 C2D for around $120 (it's what i use and it OCs very nicely)
Martin
my dad runs windows xp and he leaves the dam computer on all the time. it will slow up if its on for days. power it off at night and power it on in the morning.problem solved
thorne
u should not be allowed to operate a computer... to MAJOR violations right there.. one... buying anything with Dell on the label.. Two ... vista? Dell makes one of the best consumer machines out there. I use a Dell I6400 Laptop and loveit. Also vista is a great OS. If you understand security its awsesome. It handle allot of things similar to linux/osx/*nix such as privllegd commands. things that normally on XP that would just run and fuck shit up vista tells you. The firewall support ingres and egres. It's more stable. Using advanced features nets great performance. I have 2 machines running Vista at my house and I've been running it for atleast 6 months on the same install. If you need helping adding memory btw I can help you superhawk. My wifes pc is currently on a 2 week uptime. My pc has been up for many weeks at a time till micrsoft has a required update. I never turn my boxes off. Usally if your machine is going slow you have some dumb ass program that was poorly written leaking memory. If thats the case uninstall what ever stupid ass smiley or what every program (Weather bug is notirous for this). as for the overclock its a dell 99% sure it wont let you. Also a cheaper route is the Pentium D. As for the memory issue , 1gb in vista is slow as balls. My wife machine needed an upgrade and core2duo is not required. I'm running on my wife boxesa Pentium 660 (3.6ghz HT proc) and have 0 problems. core 2 does make it faster thought.
