LOL @ 614 streets. Electric car???? No gas by 2020?!?!?! Ocean currents. You make me laugh.

You have NO CLUE about the state the North American Electrical Grid is in. Remember the August 2003 blackout? That was only because New York was using more A/C than normal. Now you want to replace gasoline completely with electric???? Even after you manage to convince everyone to let them tear up everything to put new hi-tension lines, don't forget that you can't build a coal powered plant due to EPA regs, nor can you build a nuke plant because of the "not in my backyard" people.

Put the crack pipe down and log off the intarweb.

p.s. Ocean current generators have oil in them. True story. Wait until a boat crashes into them.

Considering they arent even built yet?

1 us dollar today = .64 euro. (yahoo finance)

$4 a gallon = 2.56 euro

1 fluid us gallon = 3.785 fluid liters

Gas is roughly 1.50 a liter in Paris today

1.50 euro times 3.875 = 5.68 euro per us gallon.

The exchange rate oposite is 1.36 us dollars to 1 euro.

So 1.36 times 5.68 euro is $7.72 American for 1 us gallon

I'd be fine with it if I lived in Paris.....but Fucking Columbus, Ohio :wtf:

The way I figure, if as keeps going up and it's $7gal, if auto manufacturers come up with alternatives that offer big savings, they will win some major business and perhaps the gas demand here will drop and we can all say say :finger: to the gas co's.

Personally, I was going to use some money I have saved for a nice Vette in the near future, but I've since really considered passing on the Vette and am waiting for the next generation alternatively powered sports car.

Weather it saves money or not, I will at some point say :finger: to gas companies.

Just some more logic to throw into the mix.

http://gm-volt.com/chevy-volt-reasons-for-use-and-cost-of-operation/

Now we can see a national index for 2007 average KWH is 10.65 cents.

Now my latest AEP charges on my bill indicated as of 5.7 cents per KWH.

With the 2010 chevy volt , you use 8kwh per 40 miles.

Now with the Volt we can drive a full 40 miles on a fullcharge before its 1.0 gasoline recharge motor needs to kick in.

40 mile = 8kwh usage 8kwh x 5.7 cents = 45.6 cents Raw kwh per 40 mile range with the volt.

Not sure what the average mpg of all combined cars in the united states is but even with the higher current gasoline mpg cars available , non are anywhere near 45.6 cents per 40 mile operating costs.

After 40 miles operation costs rise.

"After the first 40 miles, the combustion engine generator will kick in. This will keep the battery at a 30% state of charge. This 3-cylinder 1L engine will get 50 mpg fuel efficiency. To calculate the fuel efficiency for drives longer than 40 miles use the following formula: Total MPG = 55*M/(M-40)"

Also which ocean current generators are you citing that contain oil? There are tons of designs by different companies and maybe your citing some currently in use?

that article point out the UK is paying twice as much as us. But at the same time there Euro is worth twice what the Dollar is.

I dont have time to read the whole thread, so maybe someone else pointed this out, but a large portion of that $7-$8 per gallon goes to public programs like healthcare and infrastructure.

infrastructure I can see, but personally, I don't at all one to be paying for health care for everyone else. I'm sorry but universal health care for everyone isn't at all what I want if I'm going to be paying for the coverage.

I would also have a hard time paying more for gas for infrastructure given the way our country runs things. Our roads here suck and I know for a fact we could spend more money and have them last 10x as long without potholes, but we choose to build them poorly funding the system as we do and the repair contracts, etc....for political and financial reasons that don't look out for the best intrestes of the public.

Off on a tangent I know....but I don't at all see the school systems managing money well and given all the Lottery programs tout funding such systems...I cry BS. That mis-management of funding is exactly why I'll vote down any public school system levy. Why give more money to folks that can manage their finances already. No thank you, I'll pay for my kids to go to private school.

Sorry to go off a bit, but I'm not at all for paying more anything if I can't directly control how the money is spent.

Fuck the Casino BS too....that's a crock....35 other states fucked up their residents world and we sure as hell don't need to do the same. Especially considering nothing of that money will in reality come to benefit our systems....it's all bull-shit.

good post, but IMO, but if a family out there has bought and paid for an Expedition, chances are they won't be worrying about $50, $75 or even $150 mo. more in gas to justify them buying another car.

Those that are living that close to the edge, should never have bought a large SUV to begin with....and there are a lot of those families.....they should have bought a small car instead.

Those are the same folks that sure as hell shouldn't be spending $28k on a hybrid. Go buy a used Civic and call it a fucking day. It's not like you need a big or even any SUV to manage a family. Growing up we had four kids and a fucking two door Monte Carlo and a large sedan and managed just fine. Hell, fuck the Hybrids all together...buy a regular 4cyl version as we've done the math 100 times...Hybrids take like 7-10 years to pay for themselves vs their regular gas counterparts.

IMO, what we are seeing today is a reality check for most families budgets. Folks who for 5-7-10 years now have been living on the edge or beyond their means all bitching because they can't afford an extra $150 mo. for gas and or another $300-$700 mo. in a mortgage payment.

Fuck, if you can't afford those or don't have any extra money to cover expenses that come about like this, then you're living over your means period. Can't blame gas prices or mortgage companies on that. Seriously, if you need to forgo lunches out or movies with the kids, just to make ends meet, you have issues way beyond the cost of gas.

Reality check folks....I don't like gas prices going up one bit, but for many, it's time to start living like you make more than you do.....wake up and plan for the future vs spending for today.

Rant off.

I agree...but what we hear most about daily is the cost to fuel up the family pig.

I still say that if folks spend way beyond their means and bitch about just about everything.

The same folks that are on TV crying about the cost of food, gas and utilities are the same folks who have a job that pays by the hour, have 22" wheels on a car they shouldn't be trying to afford for their income and have their three kids parked on a cheap ass couch, playing X-Box 360 and watching a flat screen TV that is 3x the cost of their rent in the hood as they talk to a reporter puffing away on a carton of smokes that should be used to buy formula for their other kid playing stick-ball in the street.

On the flip side, you have the folks living in the burbs, driving a car or cars that cost 1/2 what their house does which is 3x-4x their dual family income is, trying to live like the neighbors in the next subdivision who are doctors, lawyers or own their own business do and are mortgaged up to their eye lids because they feel they are entitled to the corner office and that buying a house that costs $300k plus is a right now a privileged.

You know...the ones who feel 6mos. same as cash is the time to furnish the whole house form Ethan Allen. These are the same folks that come see my wife when one of them gets laid off for even 3-6 months. These folks are just as bad. It's not about what you make, it's about how much you save.

Sorry for the stereo-type, but we all know stereo types are based on reality.

It's not just the $150 extra in gas. It's also the $x extra to cover the rising cost of EVERYthing else caused by the increase in gas.

Gas in the Avalanche is a killer. I find me babying it more than I ever have...coasting as much as I can vs. hitting the brakes, accelerating very slowly, and trying to squeeze every extra MPG that I can.

If it hits about $5-6 a gallon, I'll have to buy another car to DD, as the monthly cost difference between the Av vs a 30+ MPG vehicle will be too much to ignore.

What I hate is the fact that every year I get a raise, I am really making less money. The cost of living is going up way quicker than my income is. Electric, natural gas, property tax, gasoline, insurace, water bill (by a LOT)...6 years ago I could be making $3/hr less and still have more to spend after paying all my bills/fuel costs simply because of these major price hikes in everything.

Things need to change, and change quick. Looking at the 3 front running canidates for the next leadership...not going to happen. :(

The way they are shipping jobs out of the country who the hell is going to be able to afford the over priced hybrid that is going to be mandated to meet the 35 mpg goal...America's first screw up was when we joined the global market...Then we elected Bush, who is still putting 70,000 barrels in the strategic reserve when it is 97% full...This oil could be sent to the refineries and might help a bit.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. Don't live beyond your means, so when the going gets tight, you can make adjustments to your budget and survive.

I'm also willing to bet most of those people put little if anything away for retirement...
