not sure if this is correct, but I asked this of Ben aka spaceghost and here's what he thinks:

I know what green and red are obviously, but what are the gray rep points for? how are they assigned? green is approve, red is disapproved, but how was I assigned a gray one....from someone who gave me a thanks for helping out on something?....not sarcastically either?

 

Ben:

I think in a couple of browsers the button is not populated by default. So when the post a comment and nothing is selected, to get the neutral grey.

 

 

 

so, what does the grey / "netrual" rep means?
