how can ya tell how the wheel was made?

 

gravity cast, modular, or monoblock?

 

my wheels were 140-160 each haha...dont remember the exact price though but nowhere near 500 a piece, so im assuming theyre gravity cast? whats the downfall to that?

Gravity cast wheels will have less strength & integrity because there will be airholes and the aluminum will be less densly packed since the fill process requires only the earths gravity. Which also gives them a better chance of splitting/cracking....because the metal is more porous

 

 

have you ever seen a gravity cast wheel give out or fail... its not pretty and deffinately not safe.

on the stang site i frequent, theres never been anyone to mention having a problem with wheels from the place i ordered mine....how can i tell if its a quality wheel or not? wont be changing them either way since theres hundreds of people on that site and never been an issue, just curious

gravity casting is gravity casting. some MFG's use more caution and regulated temperatures which might give them a slight advantage. It's not the spokes that I personally worry about, it's the wheel barrel that i worry about.

 

All these gravity cast wheels are made in one of the six large castign foundry's overseas... so chances are the branding and the pricetag is what separates.... the construction is almost transferrable (for wheels that all come from china markets)

I'm keeping the wing. I love that huge thing, and I also think the impreza looks unfinished without a wing.

 

I'm changing the rims though...

I wouldn't neccesarily call it elitist. I think it stems from use. The side loads from drifting or sustained high-g cornering can really test a rim's construction. For the average joe that just puts around town and shows off his rims, then rotas and other cheap rims should be fine. But if you're actually performance driving in a manner that puts large side loads on the rim, then you should look into getting a quality rim.

Yeah dude, volks take for fucking ever even when ordered direct.You might be right about the rarity of the gloss black, it seems like everyone and their mother is buyign the time attack edit.

 

 

Not to be a hater, but i personally only like the aesthetical appeal of the sunken face te's... but i do understand that you are limited by fitment!!!

Yeah, they're at +40 now. I think the "GTR face" starts at 30 or something like that. Right now, however, with tires, they'll be flush enough that I'll have to trim or pull the fenders. To fit a deep dish offset I'd have to run lots of neg camber, pull/hammer the rear fender, and rid on uncomfortably stiff coilovers.

 

There is a slight dish to them, the photos make them look convex.

 

And I'm going to remove the stickers. They just won't look right on the car.

Not to be a dick, but i do want you to sound educated. "GTR face" is something that the Evo guys invented/adapted which is actually defined as "sunken face".

 

People relate them to the look of the face of the wheel when actually the they just knocked off the term "GTR fitment" which refers to a wheel that is 9 or 10 inches wide with a (close-to) +20 offset.... which (you guessed it) became a standard and known fitment on the BNR, BN and R (skyline) chassis.

 

^^^ So basically, they took a 9ish inch wide wheel with a low (but still positive) offset and called it GTR face....

"deep dish offset" i don't know what you mean, because a TE37 (no matter what offset) will never be/look "deep dish"

to the outer wheel barrel? or are you referring to the face of the wheel., "dish" refers the where the barrel meets the wheel face, not the center "sunken section" of the wheel face

Well, semantics and slang anyways.. Regardless, a sunken face TE37 would look great, but isn't going to happen on an 04-07 STI without serious work. We may start seeing them on 08s due to the higher clearances and lower initial offset.

Right now I'm factory-limited in the rear at ~ -1.4 in the rear. I'm thinking of adding camber bolts to the rear so I can get some adjustment and even out the camber left to right and maybe run about -1.5 to -1.8 depending... The front's not an issue. I'm currently at -2.0 but thinking of going to -2.5 (-3.5 is my current max but overkill for the street.)

My car's bult to handle great while looking good. Priorities....

 

 

Either way, I can't wait to get these rims on... now if only I could get a hold of a set of Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs in 255/35-18. :mad:

Cast knockoffs = brittle

Potholes LOVE cast wheels

 

Besides, just about all two and three peice wheels run with a pressed or spun barrel, very malleable!!!

I've never seen a broken wheel. It's a remarkably rare occurnce and, this is just speaking from personal experience, I've found it better to drive around potholes than to drive through them. If you're vigilant those pesky potholes won't surprise you when they jump out in front of you.

 

Besides, you act as if one only has a choice between a horribly cheap knockoff and a $600 Volk wheel. There are a million options between the two that will perform so close to the Volks that he would likely not be able to discern a difference.

 

Justify it any way you want but, aesthetics aside, the benefit of running one wheel over another drops dramatically as price differences increase.

 

It's not likely that he'd be able to tell a performance difference between a TE37 and something similar, but heavier and cheaper, so the only reason left for buying them is the name. It doesn't make sense to remove the name and thus have that wheel blend in with the cheaper options, UNLESS theft is a concern.

 

This is the same as someone trying to justify the difference between $600 speaker cables and $200 speaker cables.

Drifting an STI? Not mine. You want the bright ORANGE one on the other side of the pacific. I got the TE37s because I wanted quality, strength, and the same or less weight than the stock rims. Why get new rims if they're a downgrade from the stockers? Also, I plan to hit mid-ohio now and then and I wanted a set of rims I could trust.

 

Ask Thorne about the kind of driving my cars see. :)

The difference in weight between the TE37 and a cheap cast knockoff of similar design is 8-10lbs. That's about 30-40lbs of unsprung rotational weight. I'll definately be able to tell the difference.

 

And as to why pull the stickers off? Because blue and white stickers on an all black car would look bad. I didn't build the car to show off, I built it to DRIVE.

 

Now I *might* be able to get reproductions of the decals in black with a red outline. THOSE I might use.
