copperhead
So...my grandfather passed away today, and he was in the Navy during WWII. I'm trying to figure out if there is any military organization that does anything for vets funerals. Someone told me that they will send you a flag to drape over the casket that was flown over the US Capital, but he wasn't sure who to talk to in order to get it. If anyone could direct me to who I need to talk to, or if there is anything else that the military does in this type of situation, please let me know Edit: The funeral is this wednesday, so I'm kind of in a hurry. Thanks guys.

Tindall2006
Call the Va in columbus... I am unsure of what to do, but i can call around tommorow and find out... your best bet is to call the Va though, he should be entitled to a millitary funueral
Akula
Yup, local VA. Have as much info as you can, name and SS if you have it. If he was a member of a VFW they will take care of it for you.
Jeffrey
VA as others have stated, they will send an Honor Guard from the nearest base to do the ceremony. Sorry to hear about your grandfather.
Scotty2Hotty
Check with VA, there's plenty of VFW's that have an honor guard.
VA GUY
They're partly correct, mostly not. VA does NOT provide any type of color guard for burial's, nor do we coordinate them, except when the veteran is being buried in a national cemetary. Either yourself or the funeral home will have to do that. The military or VFW or Amvets is an option as well. Here is a link to the 2008 Federal Benefits for Veterans and Dependents, go to Chapter 7, Burial and Memorial Benefits... http://www1.va.gov/opa/vadocs/fedben.pdf Have to copy and paste that in your browser Or go to http://www.cem.va.gov for more. Hope that helps! Feel free to give me a buzz if you need anything else, I may not be the right person, but I can sure find out who is. 614-257-5579. My consolences for your loss by the way.. I keep reading the book on this, here are some more cliff notes: DoD has a toll free number for funeral directors only to request honors, 1-877-MIL-HONR, and there's another website to check out, http://www.militaryfuneralhonors.osd.mil Hope this helps. Ziggy1647545504
You can contact the Ohio Chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders as well. This is an organization I recently joined whose sole purpose is to honor our military personnel. http://www.patriotguard.org I imagine you'd get at least a couple of people that will come and assist with honoring your grandfather for his service. VA GUY
Hey Mike, if the funeral director didn't request a flag, you can get one from the Franklin County Veterans Service Office, they have them down there (if your grandfather was a Franklin County resident), 614-462-2500. copperhead
Thanks for the help guys. Sadly, I was busy getting other stuff taken care of today and had to pick up my sister from the air port, so I didn't even get on here until late. I wish I could have done something, but I didn't think far enough ahead to have things set up.
