Kayaking on Hoover (pics)

Recommended Posts

Went out for about 3 hours today on Hoover Reservoir and took a few pictures.

Not sure what the little shack is, but it looked kinda cool.

This is a little cove that I saw about a dozen fish jumping (my ninja camera skills were lacking). Fish like string cheese BTW.

I didn't know this, but I guess Hoover has a total of 48 miles of coast.

Saw about a dozen of these guys. Saw a deer too, but it ran off before I could get my camera out of the dry bag.

So, that's where all that rain's been going.

Tim, can you recommend any other good places to go cayaking around?

We are very found of the hocking river and have been meaning to try mohican. Looking for something with a current, rather than a stagnant lake to paddle around in.

Nice pics btw.

I've spent some time talking to some of the guys at The Outdoor Source recently inquiring about that actually. From what I gather, the Scioto is pretty good along with the Olentangy (guess they released some water there today which created some whitewater conditions). I'm just now starting to really look into good places to go, but I'll try to provide more info as I get it. One thing that a lot of people do is kayak and canoe down the Scioto River all the way to Portsmouth, but that takes a few days depending on if you do the whole trip. Some go from Columbus to Chillicothe and some just do the Chillicothe to Portsmouth leg.

The weekend of the 20th, there is a 2-day trip down the Ohio River near Cincy that seems pretty fun. First day is 12 miles, and the second is 8 miles. They go through a 20' lock as well which seems like it would be pretty cool to do.

The Outdoor Source does a kayak demo every Thursday starting at 7pm at either Griggs Reservoir or Hoover. This week is at Griggs Reservoir and next is at Hoover. It's open to the public and you can try out any of the kayaks they bring out. I used 5 different ones last week, the most expensive one being $1800...I got out quick.

I'll try to get more info on some of the more current-based locations like Trapper John's.

Hoover would be a great lake if it didn't have that stupid 10HP limit. These pics support that.

Shawn, I see a number of people Kayaking on Griggs Resevior. I'm out there pretty often since my fiancée's condo is next to it. There are a decent chunk of power-boats out there (1/2 being wakeboard boats, which tend to have people that know what they are doing on them, since they probably don't want to wreck their 50k+ boats). Easy, local place for you to get to, I think they even have Kayak clubs that meet there. No lake lice to deal with either.

Good info, Joe. Got any idea what days the groups are out there?

No idea; I don't boat unless there is a motor behind me. And that motor better be way bigger than a 10HP jobber. I just see them out on Griggs when I'm boating there.

Went out for a few hours today and snapped a few pics along the way.

The new rack setup with the kayak mounted. This is at Two Bridges ramp off Red Bank Rd.

I have done Mohican a couple times. I used to frequent Trapper John's, but I like that with Mohican you have alot more options (longer trips and even camping if you want). I couldn't remember the pricing at Trapper Johns from last year for a proper comparison, but it seemed to me we got out of Mohican a good bit cheaper even.

A few new ones from today. The water is way down from where it was when I started this thread.
