Mitch
here's the straight up recommendations on radar detectors. 1 on the interstate a handheld CB is your best bet, by far. Ask a trucker a mile ahead and you know. 2. Bel, Val, passport 8500 are good. other than that, you get what you pay for. Cops have YEARS of experience. They know what you know about avoiding tickets and know how to fuck you. They win in the end.
Mr. Jones
I got my 77 in a 55 with a top of the line Cobra. I got my 74 in a 40 with a top of the line Bel. Waste.Of.Money. Waste of money is really only applicable when we are talking about laser which is were 98% of my tickets come from. If you are driving all over smaller town's area's you are more likely to find classic "radar". Unless you are a lucky SOB and it caught the guy in-front of you getting tagged first you are screwed. Using a detector for laser is nearly useless in that respect.. BEEP YOUR SCREWED. If you are a highway warrior IE: getting tagged by the highway patrol, invest in a high quality Jammer. I'm seriously considering getting a LI very soon. Expensive, but when you add up a couple 75+mph tickets it becomes a bargain.

Mr. Jones
nobody needs one they don't work worth a fuck Are you drinking already Dave? If you do lots of driving in a small municipality that still utilize standard radar then they can be rather handy. On most major highways though..good luck. TTQ B4U
I got my 77 in a 55 with a top of the line Cobra. I got my 74 in a 40 with a top of the line Bel. Waste.Of.Money. truth be told though, your situations are classic examples of how NOT to speed. you're the guy that passes me and gets busted. there's no way 74 in a 40 couldn't get busted. cops wouldn't even need to clock you. anything under 55 I usually go 5-7mph over without any concern or issue. I will push it to 10-15mph over but not blazing past anyone as to stand out. usually just to pass or have fun for a short spurt or with several other cars in a pack. blasting past folks in a 40mph zone is just screaming "catch me" same with 77 in a 55.....you likely stood out fairly clearly. On the highway I regularly go 7-10, maybe 12 mph over the limit and have never been caught at those speeds....higher...yes.

The 74 in a 40 was 14 years ago when my girlfriend (now my wife) called me and said some guy was chasing her. The cop was sitting in the 40 and clocked me while still in the 55. Since around 18 years old, I am probably the smartest speeder here, muwahaha. I speed everyday, and I am clean for 14 years.
TurboNova
Dumbest Post On CR. Mr. Jones
If you have an LI system are you going to also get a laser detector and turn off the LI system after you slow down to the speed limit? When getting tagged that is... LI = Detecter. It emits a 100db+ siren. Once this happens you hit your brakes, slow down and then hit the kill switch, allowing the officer to tag you at a regular speed.

SpaceGhost
you know Mine died 5 months ago and I have had 3 tickets since then, I never bought one when I posted on here I needed one. I stil need to buy one. Really what I used mine for was; if I passed a cop, at least the thing would tell me he was clocking or not. I always hate not having one, thinking crap is he comming after me, was I doing 5 or 10 over? It is nice to go by and officer and not have it go off and say "meh he wasn't shooting" rather than watch in the rear view to see if he pulled out to get you. ANd if he did and wasn't clocking, you know he was just moving on, not following you. Kind of a piece of mind thing.

Cordell
Radar detectors are a waste, if you want to waste your money by an escort. However every time I've been pulled over in the last 5 years it has been with a lazer. Radar detectors stand no chance. Might consider buying a lazer jammer which are legal, but who cares I've been clocked from helicoptors before too. Do you guys really think radar detectors are worth it? BTW I threw my Cobra away, bought an Escort and got ticketed anyway, fucking waste.
