Homemade Cornhole Project

My buddy Gregg (tripleGmax) and his wife just closed on their first home and moved in while I was on vacation, so I wasn't able to help them move. Knowing they both really enjoy cornhole, I decided to make them a homemade set as a house-warming gift and may have over engineered it just a bit, but I think it will turn out really nice.

I bought a 4'x8' sheet of birch and had Lowe's cut it for me since I don't have a table saw, so I ended up with tops for 2 sets. After a few people have seen these pics, I've been commissioned to build a few more sets.

I wanted to give the boards a nice finished look, so I routed the edges on the board as well as both sides of the hole, so you avoid catching your hand on the under side when retrieving the bags.

I pre-drilled and counter-sunk so I could cover the screw holes with filler to be able to paint over them.

For the legs, I had given some thought in how to avoid the common damage areas you run into when going with folding legs, so I installed nylon bushings in the legs as well as on the frame so the bolt would ride on the bushing verses against the wood.

I also wanted to avoid damage to the backs of the legs as well as the frame when the legs are in use, so I added some rubber stoppers to the backsides of the legs. Here you can see some counter-sunk screws in place.

Here is the scarlet and grey laid out with painters tape (which was carried through the hole opening)

They turned out really well and for the first set I've ever built, I was pretty pleased. Gregg and his wife really enjoyed them when we got a chance to break them in Saturday night. Very first toss (made by Gregg) went in the hole.

Oh, one other thing I did was to add a few velcro sections under the board to store the measuring tool I made. I cut a nylon rope to the 27' length and added two chrome rings to each end to help in laying out the boards instead of having to dig out a measuring tape every time.

f'n sweet. when i saw the thread i thought you were making something to have for saturday. lol

ive been wanting to make a set. might have to get with you for some guidance

haha, not sure if I'll have another set ready by Saturday, but I do have an older set that belongs to one of my friends at my house, so we can use those.

I still have a few of the measurements memorized, so I'll be happy to lend a hand.

$41 They had pre-cut 2'x4' sheets that were $27 each, so with Lowe's cutting them for me for free, it was a MUCH better deal. Still maybe not the cheapest route, but I didn't want them to be cheap and I would hope these would last for a nice long time.

lol well thanks lol... and why do I have the feeling I havnt even heard the worst of it yet.... lol

But really though man just a plain set that I could paint later on, how much would I be looking at? I can't get over how kick ass that looks man! And a big thumbs up on the "cushion" like things on the legs. my aunts cornhole table busted a leg cause my drunk uncle missed the hole completly and some how managed to toss one into the pool and with the added weight of being soaked over time it got heavy and broke the legs off..(It was a thin flimsy set up anyways)
