zeitgeist57
Unless that pic is a hoax you mathematically HAVE to assume that we are not the only life forms in the universe. Look at how many galaxies there are in that one picture!!! ^^christian college graduate talking here.

And here we are, stuck trying to find signs of life on Mars.

Now imagine if we could focus hubble on every spec of sky like this, there would be an unimaginable amount of galaxies. And this is only as far as we can currently see, and these images are like a view backwards in time. The views we are seeing are what these galaxies looked like billions of years ago. If we had the technology to see even farther away, who knows what we could discover.

evan9381
Why aren't we out there already?! because we would have needed to start the journey long before the earth was made? reminds me of the joe rogan skit where hes talking about the SETI program... "we spend hundreds of millions of dollars sending radio signals into outerspace and hoping for a response. do you know how long it takes a radio signal to leave OUR galaxy? 37 million years. so we're sending out a message that says 'hello, is anyone out there??' and then 74 million years later? 'what?' "

HotCarl
Ok, i hate to admit it but im a big fucking dork and watch star trek. Shit like this makes me wonder if there is life (and why not?) AND they have the ability to travel long distance's why would they come here?! We're so emersed in our one bickering and fighting who the fuck would want to visit us? Or communicate with us for that matter? I do wonder if it will happen in our lifetime though. paktinat
the other cool thing I read about this image is they pointed it at a "dark" section of the sky; that is there is nothing visible to the human eye in the section they did the scanning. Also, the tiny red dots are galaxies that are so far away that the light just reaching us is 13 billion years old.
zeitgeist57
I love the world we are in today, with so much amazing information we are gathering about the universe around us. I am reminded about last year when the Vatican said "Hey, it's OK for you to be Christian and believe in E.T." Talk about a change of policy...and a belief system dating over 1,000years! http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24598508 http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/popes-astronomer-insists-alien-life-would-be-part-of-gods-creation-828303.html Looking at the timeframe of the universe, we would have to be incredibly lucky from a statistical view to encounter alien life in our lifetime. The best chance is to discover evidence of alien life elsewhere (fossils or bacteria on Mars, for example) or evidence of past visits here on Earth that we were not previously made aware of. EDIT: I don't think being into space makes you a "dork" anymore. With everything we have learned just in the past 50 years, I think you're a closed-minded, ignorant wanker for NOT being at least slightly interested in space.
