New AutoX classes!!

Some things are changing for autocross this, particularly with what cars go in what classes so I though I'd try and explain some of what's going on.

1: "STR" class. It's a new class for cars like the S2000, Miata, and various other 2 seat sports cars that never had a home when equipped with street tires. This class is for those cars with street tires of a treadwear rating of "140" or higher with various wheel width restrictions. This falls into the "Street Touring" category rules.

2: Stock classes changing, I personally don't have all the info but the main classes affected are "A,B,and C Stock. A lot of cars are being moved around in these classes. For instance the C5 vette(non-Z06) are moving to A-stock from Super Stock and such. The FD RX-7 is moving as well but who cares since there are no stock Rx-t's out there!!

Here is the link with the new rules: http://scca.org/contentpage.aspx?content=61 Torwards the bottom are PDF files with the rules and car classifications. I will try to awnser any questions people have.

If you have more questions or want to keep up with the local autocrossers on their forum go to http://forum.ovr-scca.org/ There are many veterans on there that can help and anything goin on with our region will be posted in there.

THAT IS SO STUPID, this is why I don't race with SCCA anymore :(. It's all about winning and that's why there are so many bogus classes out there, they do NOT need that many. If you can't be competitive you bitch to the SCCA and they make you a class. Above is the result of said bitching aka the STR class because people in the other Miata/S2K classes can afford slicks and some cannot. If you can't afford them who cares? You run what you have and until you can get slicks you will continue to get beat. Since when is "stock" having an after market front sway bar? Etc, I'm sure this has been gone over and gone over again, but it should be said here....

I had guys in CSP all bent out of shape when I went out and ran faster than a handful cars on slicks and a ton of suspension mods and exhaust mods etc... in my MR2 on Performance All Season tires, adjustable shocks and a cold air intake, and HEAVY 16" wheels compared to stock. I had guys scouring my car trying to figure out how I was cheating. I came in 3rd everytime by just a little bit, but I bet if I got slicks and a sway bar I may be able to edge a little closer. I didn't complain that my car didn't fit anywhere else...

Oh and as an after thought so they are moving all the people who didn't have enough money for a Z06 to a class with C4 vettes and S2K's? What gives? Like I said people can't win, they complain, new classes/class re-arranging begins. The E36 M3 is moving down to CS racing against MR2's now. Edited by Crossle

I planned on racing with SCCA this year for the first time, (un)fortuneatly my car isn't classed competitively due to my CF Hood. Probably going to run SMF just for kicks.

Come and run Porsche Club, get 2X more runs for less money, and you are there at the event for less time, and it's still local. As far as class goes you would be in "X" class with everything non-Porsche, but it's a lot more fun.

I plan to run at every Porsche Club event in 2010 (they were great in 2009!), but I want to try SCCA too as I've never run with them before.

Porsche Club is fun if you just want to get runs in. I like SCCA because I like having competition. With the Porsche club, you are pretty much guaranteed to kick everyone's ass, even in a low power car.

Then that's where I need to start with my heavy betty. :D

Its definitely a great place to get experience.

Other than some unofficial stuff with members (not here in Ohio, though) and my constant quest for the perfect road every other weekend, I would've gotten started in this long ago, funds willing. It just seems I always find something that needs money more or I feel guilty for considering blowing the cash at all. And then I still gotta buy a helmet. Hell, I don't even know prices for either of those clubs, yet. I haven't checked into it in forever. Guess I should.

The marque clubs in general tend to be more about the car and less about the competition. Like anything, there's pro's and con's with each. Every so often I like to do a marque club event as they generally are much more laid back and as pointed out you tend to get more runs.

There are numerous non-SCCA clubs within a couple hours of central OH that put on events. You should be able to Google and find most of these:

- Buckeye Miata Club

- Mid-Ohio Sports Car Club

- Northern Ohio Racing Association

- Miami Valley Sports Car Club

- Mid Ohio Region Porsche Club of America

There are probably some more. I also went to numerous events with the Northwest Ohio Region SCCA as they have a couple of really excellent sites and some 'shoes that run in my class. It's about 110 minutes from my house in Hilliard, towing the trailer.

I like running Porsche club mainly because Dave (my boss) and a couple of other guys i know really well are all super close in times. As they have upgraded their 911's this year I have not stepped up on the MR2, so this next year will be fun with new parts.

SCCA offers more competition, but for me personally I get the same level of competition at these events.

I also really enjoy the people over at the SCCA events as much, if not more than at the marque events.
