zeitgeist57
I'd get one just to put in my yard. One up the "Joneses" in UA. Neighbor: "Hey Clay! What's that in your yard?" Me: "Ohhh...just a little ol' Pratt & Whitney liquid-fuel rocket engine off of the Space Shuttle. This baby's got 400,000lbs of thrust!" Neighbor: "Did'ja get it at Home Depot?" Or, I could countersink the exhaust nozzle into the grass for a KILLER fire pit.
unfunnyryan
Those things have massive turbochargers on them... http://z.about.com/d/dc/1/0/r/d/spaceshuttle.jpg Someone should take up this offer. edit: for size comparison, look at the water jug at the bottom left of the picture. zeitgeist57
Cirrusly, how would one get parts from the Space Shuttle for free? I'd drive Cleetus down for some cool stuff...make a roadtrip out of it. Why the eff not??? Actually, I'm amazed they are looking at the shuttles for $28MM a pop...that's cheaper than many commercial airliners!
RyM3rC
We already paid for them, what do the taxpayers care if it's given away? I think you still have to pay transportation and handling fees, which could be hundreds of thousands of $ on its own.
Science Abuse
I'm also reasonably sure they have the right to refuse to give it to you. They're likely trying to give it all to museums.
zeitgeist57
I wasn't referring to the engines. Just meant any sort of spare parts/junk/etc from the shuttle program... I'm not that naive to think if they were giving away rocket engines that I would make it to the top of the list to receive one.

Avenger1647545502
The engines are sold as-is, where-is. You gotta transport it yourself, and GOOD luck with that. The shuttle 'price', on the other hand, is the estimated cost of transporting the orbiter to an approved airport by 747 Shuttle Carrier, then by truck to the museum after disassembly. And, while the actual airframe is donated for museum use, it is still OWNED by NASA, just like gate guard aircraft.
