What SUV to get?

Well, if you're not looking to spend an arm and a leg, then you're looking at the class of crossover/suv we were. After researching and test driving a shitload of suv's, we decided on the rav. Not because I'm a fanboy. When it comes to doing shit like this, neither of us have loyalty.

Those who know me know how much I put into research. It took me two weeks to decide on a new fish food. Buyings tire is going to take me a week. Etc, etcs. On top of that, we really thought we'd end up in a new Forester.

However, the price, room, reliability, performance, etc were too much for the competition. The rav is built on it's own platform, now, as well. I originally had some good info I typed here, but I took too damn long doing something and it signed me the fuck out. Anyway, here's some links with some good info.

Recent Car & Driver comprison test:

Second article's link is dead but found google cache of page. There are a couple little things different because it's an Australian mag and there's been some changes since then (good ones, of course), however, it has a wealth of technical info I'm sure you'll find impressive and suprising. Know that the rav is actually even better at this point.

I'd also like to state that no matter the current toyota situation, the fact remains they have one of the highest resale values and reliability ratings. Only one american suv/crossover recently score 'average reliability' and that was the Ford Flex.

Test drive a v6 4x4 Rav4. Ours is 270hp and weights 3640lbs w/ a tow package that can tow 3500lbs. Upgraded radiator, tranny coolers, etc. (Yes, I've actually weighed it.) And it has been unbelievably good in this weather we've had. Amazing. There's just a ton of little details most people dont' know that really made reaffirmed our decision. (I continue to research things I've bought, even after I've bought them. lol)

I got to this late and didnt read past page 1...

Go test drive a Trailblazer, then go test drive a Honda Pilot.

I would recommend a Pilot, they are smooth riding, great powered, reliable vehicles. I drive one just about every 3 days, and I love them.

They have 1in less space then a Tahoe. (I measured)

Another car to look at is the Dodge Journey. My brother has one for a company car and loves it.

Had a rental Journey, because the dodge caravan that I initially got rented broke. Putting 4 adults in a journey for any length of time should be a capital offense. GIANT HUNK OF FLAMING CRAP

My TBSS giggles at them.

I'm sure it does, I'm sure that it just boogies down the 1/4 mile.

I do ask the question however,

80's Grand AM or New Trailblazer, be damned if I know...right down the 4 speed auto...

This. A Friend of mine has one, it's been dead reliable for the ~120k they've had it for. Used models can be had for down right cheap. Only downside is the 18-20ish mpg you'll get, though I'm sure that's pretty good relative to some of the other choices listed.

12's with bolt ons isn't bad for a big boat. I agree that the dash sucks but you forgot the sweet nav system. The funniest part of that picture is the check engine light.

The drawback to me is that I owned one the very first year they were out....June of 01. That dash is unchanged. Interior and exterior styling is a 9 years old and quite dated.
