Is it part of the "style" to have rust/primer/shit spots all over the thing?

yea, its supposed to look like it rotted out in a field for 60 years....hence that being a new paintjob, that ones actually painted to look like that...some people actually just sand down the actual body and let it rot out for awhile and then slap it the chassis to get the look

The traditional rods are all rusty because that's often how they were. Guys without any $$ would scrounge whatever they could and slap it together to make a 'rod. A lot of these "rat" rods are put together these days for less than $5K. Some even as low as $1500. Scrounging and innovative use of oddball stuff is the name of the game (drawer pull knobs for grills, linkages made of old tools, etc.) You get big respect for using odd and rare engines. Old engines from generators and tractors go over well. The more obscure the better. FOr these guys, climbing through an old junkyard or mining a swap meet for parts is an art form.

If you bag it right, the suspension won't be as bad and you can still drop it. The only reason I would want to drop it is to give that flat in a field rotting away look. I've never wanted a bagged auto for anything other than this. This means, it'd have to have all the parts so as to hide the beautifully contrasting engine and drivetrain that's looks awesome.

Is there anything from later than the 50's that you could rat rod and it not look stupid?

Per the classic image of a rat rod... I don't think so. The '60s and '70s were the big body era. Those cars are more worthy of being built into muscle cars/etc than ratting out.
